Currently, Weltman and Clifford believe that they will work together as a defensive unit and as knowledge they need to add more scoring. I think that is a fair perspective, specially since all 3 of these guys are the Magic’s best assets. It would make no sense to let one of them walk, in this case AG.
Had a great opportunity to get Young or Doncic. They would of brought a high potential offensive focal point for the team. Can't keep adding bigs in a league where the importance of perimeter play by guards and SFs has been at an all-time high in league history. Needed to sabotage the Dallas/Atlanta trade by trading up with Memphis and poach Young. Having to likely trade Fournier for Parsons, but that would be worth the risk putting ourselves in position to trade up again for Doncic.
What was the great opportunity to get Young or Doncic? It would have cost millions to move up to 4 and get Young, a guy that the Magic FO may have had rated lower than Bamba.
If what you are saying is true, why was the #1 pick in the draft a big and not Doncic? And then why did another big in Bagley go right after him?
Also, why is Jokic now getting a max, and Capella most likely will too. Houston, the most progressive offense in the league is rumored to try and fill that position with Deandre Jordan? It seems as if many, many teams all find the 5 sport to be important. And a team like the Magic needs rim protection just as badly as a PG and shooting.
What does it matter how much it would cost financially? It doesn't matter if we have bad contracts while we are rebuilding/tanking. If it would basically take Fournier for Parsons to swap 6 for 4, that's a decent deal. The remaining money on those contracts are basically the same (EF 51, CP 50), but the Parsons deal ends in 2 years instead of Fournier's 3. Fournier likely doesn't have a future with this team so getting out from a contract with 50 million on it in 2 years instead of 3 is better for our finances.
Trading up for Young to shorten a contract is an easy yes for us, and Memphis dumping a washed up Parsons for a guy that fits perfectly into their starting lineup who's locked in for 3 years is a yes for them too. That trade for Young is pretty good, but snatching Atlanta's guy and holding a great prospect for us hostage to get an even better prospect in Doncic, is amazing. Giving up the protected 1st that Dallas did to move up is more than reasonable for the best playmaking prospect Orlando has had since probably Penny. Not shaving a year off a 50 million deal and keeping a protected 2019 1st is going to be the next of the franchise's worst management decisions in history.
TLDR: Settling at 6 was bad, trading up for Young would be good, trading up twice for Doncic would of been amazing.
