Is Paul George the Most Overrated Player in the NBA?

Post#1 » by Baseline Runner » Wed Jun 27, 2018 10:01 am

I get he had a couple of good playoff series with Indiana years back where he challenged Lebron hard. But this guy has never put up big stats in either efficiency or productivity. He's a career 18 points a game player on 43% shooting and he has averaged just as many turnovers as assists throughout his career. He got the chance to play with a superstar in Westbrook and players like Adams and Anthony and still did nothing with Oklahoma City but it seems Westbrook gets all of the blame for that (and I am no Westbrook fan myself). He had some absolutely horrific playoff games this year where he went 2-16 with 6 turnovers for example, other guys got called out in the playoffs for bad performances but George seems immune to all criticism. He is a strong defender for the wing position, a rich man's 3 and D player.

To me he just seems like a decent to fringe all-star player on par with guys like Kevin Love, Demar Derozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, etc. a top 25 player in the league. So much hype around this guy all year and where he signs, but its not that big of a deal, he is not going to be the difference maker for any team to beat Golden State just like he wasn't with OKC this year.

Yeah he is... I think you’re especially right about him being immune to criticism. Still a really good player but a tad overrated. Especially by himself given that dumb special.

He went toe to toe with LeBron in 2017 averaging 28-9-7 while being one of the best 2 way players in the game. He's not the main guy on a championship team but he's a good 2nd player and a great 3rd.

There are way more overrated players in this game than Paul George.

For his contract not really because he plays to par mostly(Wiggins and others are much worse).

He´s overrated if you feel his top 10 player in the league and that he can be your first option.Because he´s probably not good enough to be second option on championship team even if that team have LeBron , and he caries himself like one.

I’ve always thought so to be honest. His defense is fantastic but offensively he’s wildly inconsistent for a “superstar” player.

I would say Blake, but I'm gathering that secret has already been exposed.

I would have to maybe go KAT here. His defense is so bad that it nullifies all the good he does on offense. Another candidate would be Derozen. He never does anything when it matters

He is a rarity in the nba... a two way player.

He is still a great scorer, just his numbers are down playing along side two brick layers. He is imo an elite defender and he shot the ball well from 3. In the playoffs he usually plays well aside from that game in Utah.

I though this for at least the past 2 years where a lot of people thought him as superstar and a top10 player. This year people seem to have really toned down on the love so I'm not so sure anymore.

I'm sure we'll never have as much buzz for a guy who peaked as a top-15 player (at best) in the league ever again.

Now that he's going to the Lakers yeah I'm sure a lot of people will think he's overrated and probably not even a top 20 (top 30?) player...

I thought the guys on Sirius NBA hit the nail on the head yesterday morning when they were mocking the poem that the Lakers wrote as part of their Paul George recruiting pitch. Their mock version was essentially,

"Paul, we have dreams of you coming to the Lakers. True, we dream about Lebron first and even Kawhi 2nd but we sometimes dream about you coming here too. We have many dreams of you coming here to LA after we have already dreamed about Lebron and Kawhi"

Not the most overrated player but a good/great player. He has proven he cannot be the #1 guy in a championship team. He is a good 2/3 guy in a championship team. He is a great 3&D guy with offensive skills that is top 20 in the NBA easily and deserving of a MAX based on the current criteria.

Great 3 and D guy, but yeah he's definitely overrated. A lot of media members keep pronouncing him as a top 15 player when that clearly isn't the case.

I think his defense is quite overrated. He was a great two way player a few years ago and definitely before his injury, but last season he really wasn't anything of the sort.

Yes and ive been saying this for a while. and before people get all up in arms that isnt to say he isnt a good player or even all-star. but he isnt some elite guy or have some huge impact on winning. He really rose to stardom cause the league wanted a face in the east to go with lebron. he was never really an elite player although he did have some great playoff series.

i think rich mans 3 and d player is spot on

He may be a bit overrated now, but PG is definitely one of the most versatile star players.

His ability to shoot, score in isolation, and defend multiple positions makes him one of the best plug-and-play players in the league. That's extremely valuable. He's a star that doesn't need the ball and can get gritty against the oppositions toughtest player.

The fit with he and WB isn't ideal...not sure anyone is an ideal fit next to someone that plays Westbrook's style....but he's still a very very good player. He's not a top tier superstar, but he's definitely in that next tier of player after LBJ, KD, Steph, Kawai, Harden, AD

Honestly would you rather have PG or WB? In a vacuum, WB is probably the better overall player, but guys like PG contribute more to winning basketball when it comes down to it. I'd rather have PG just because it's easy to slot anyone around him.

He did that on 38% shooting, while giving the defensive assignment on Lebron to CJ Miles.

His defense has gotten lazy since his usage has gone up post-injury.

Nationally, the conversation is how the free agency of one of the best players ever hinges on where Paul George goes...
