This is all that matters regarding LaVine's contract...
Who is LaVine banana boating with this summer?

Zach is a good player to place a bet on.
Don't need a long term SG next year.
Although I unfortunately expect GarPax to think we should commit to one. Which is why their whole "This is a long-term rebuild!" schtick is bull ****.

For most teams and most players, free agency is about overpaying. That’s why I’m against it as rebuilding avenue vs draft.
Free agency price is not set by what the average Perceived value is. It’s what the most highest value is...what the outlier is.
There are 2 sources of FA bargains:
1) Guys who are worth more than the MAX (i.e. top 10 players)
2) Quality 5th-starter type guys who can be nabbed on vet min deals
I agree that the good NBA players or worse, the potentially good but still young, guys are where the bad deals get made. This will only become more of a problem after they lift the one-and-done restriction.

While true, they know full well these are their only opportunities to get a good player, outside of the draft. Because no FA wants to play there.

I love his work ethic but I do have some pauses.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.
NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

If they overpay Zach, that frees us up to “overpay” Exum. Given all the studs on their roster looking for paydays, the Jazz may not be able to match a 10-12 mil per year offer for Exum... especially not if we front load the contract. And I’d take Exum at 12 mil per year over Zach at 17+. Shoot, I’d take Exum at 12 over Zach at 12.
I wouldn't give Exum anything big. Way too deep an injury history. If LaVine walks, I'm starting Valentine and riding into the season.

Valentine simply doesn’t have the athleticism to keep up at the starter level. He fits the Super Sub mold with his three point shooting and distribution abilities but he will struggle on offense and defense at the starter level. I feel like you’re sleeping on Exum along with almost everyone else. Hear me out. IMO Exum has less injury concerns than Zach because Exum was a plus player on both sides of the ball last year and has slightly bigger tools. Exam has already demonstrated that he can realize some of his potential, which indicates he’s trending up. Zach on the other hand was running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Zach doesn’t know what it’s like to be a plus player on either end.

Re: Wiretap: Bulls Hope To Re-Sign Zach LaVine At $14M-$16M
KC wrote it up for an article: https://t.co/Ped9MINbNR
I really don't believe this. The article even talks of a scenario where the Kings get off some money so they can do an even larger offer.
I hate this sentiment
More important to the rebuild would be having resources to land actual game changers. This is really absurd and infuriating.

But as the current Kawhi Leonard-Spurs staredown and formation of recent super teams demonstrates, players feeling respected goes a long way in an age in which recruiting of other players is paramount. LaVine consistently embraced being the face of the Bulls’ rebuild. Good-faith negotiations could be important to the rebuild’s momentum.

Re: Wiretap: Bulls Hope To Re-Sign Zach LaVine At $14M-$16M
Only the Bulls' FO knows what is their cut-off price/deal with Lavine, but $14-$16M/yr is fair. They can always add big incentives to the deal if he makes the all-star team and so forth. The only other teams I can see being interested in Lavine are the Hawks since he will help sell tickets with Trae Young, and maybe the Magic if they walk away from Gordon. The Lakers might dip their hands in too if they can't get any big name to join Lebron.

14 is a fair value for Lavine. I would probably be fine with slight overpay 15. But, 16 makes me nervous.

Marcus Smart and Jabari! 8th seed here we come! Rumor has it that Kirk is coming out of retirement.

My bet: SAC does not make an offer. No team makes an offer that LaVine likes. Negotiations with Bulls go into August. LaVine ends up signing a 1+1 contract at $15 M per year.

yeah. if you piss lavine off now, there's probably nothing that you can't smooth over with money in the future if he proves he's worth it. there's really no need to be proactive or generous on our end.
"sorry, but there's a chance you might not actually be a particularly good nba player" is a harsh reality zach will have to hear at some point if he doesn't radically improve his game. if he's not prepared to accept that he might just be a role player, then that's a red flag in its own right

I think the kings have had quite a bit of fun building one of the worst franchises in pro sports over the last decade. Signing Zach for 20 million sounds right up their alley.

Exam played 17 minutes a game for 14 games in the regular season last year, for a total of 235 minutes. He was decent, but then he was horrible again in the playoffs. He's a career 7.5 PER player. He's also played 80 games in the past 3 seasons. Throwing big money at a guy because of a 14 game sample size would be exactly how to screw up a rebuild.
I'm not super high on LaVine either, but I think a short term contract is easily the best for both sides. 1 or 2+1. Money doesn't really matter as long as it doesn't go into the 20s. (obviously I don't hes worth 20 or anything near it based on past play, I just don't think 3-5 million a year hurts us that much if it's a short contract.

It's very possible. The only good thing is Vlade seems to keep the length of the deals shorter so the pain isn't as severe.

Come on. Why does TWO mill change your equation THAT much? That amount isn't stopping you from doing something super important. Any team can find a few mill of space, if they need it. If it's 14 and 20+, I get it. But 14 and 16? If that's the differences, you make the move and don't think twice. Not worth losing a deal over, if it's a player you potentially see being a big contributor during your window.
This is strictly a numbers thing, no idea if 14-16 is accurate or just a rumor from KC. Just moving the needle 2 mill and it truly bothering you, doesn't make sense, in our situation.

Goal shouldn't be to pluck Exum now. Rather meet with him and indicate that if he takes the QO, we'll be interested next offseason.

Honestly, +/- $4m is just posturing for good or bad relations. $2m is a compromise difference. You can't really do much with that little in cap. You're more-so looking at groups of 5s (10m/15/20/25-max) for his yearly salary.
It's gonna come down between:
A 1+1 max salary. (SAC at the top of the list IMO)
B $60-80m for 4y (CHI, ATL, SAC)
C His stock falls totally flat and he and agent agree to a $35m/3 offer sheet.
D Some idiot team offering him a full max (looking at you SAC).
I think A or B happen and Chicago matches unless it's beyond $70m/4. I don't want A to happen. Kills our 2019 cap options, puts it in Zach's head that he needs to get his numbers up again to play the next round of free agency, doubt we resign him afterwards... it'd be a slightly modified version of the Niko debacle.
Option C sounds incredible, but unlikely.

Re: Wiretap: Bulls Hope To Re-Sign Zach LaVine At $14M-$16M
If the report of Indy making a 4 yr 80M offer to Gordon is true, then I think it gives us somewhat of a benchmark. I see Gordon as being worth a little more because he doesn't have the injury history. So if he gets that, I'd say 4 yr 72M should be the walk away point for Zach.
