Thaddeus Young Picks Up Option

wow! I didn't expect him to opt in at this point. Certainly an important player from last year's team, it will be nice to have him back.

Means no Aaron Gordon without a sign and trade...

Makes you wonder if the Aaron Gordon thing was a leak from the pacers to get him to opt in?

Not necessarily. We can still waive DC or Bojan, or send out salary in trades. CoJo for example should be movable, as we acquired him for cap space last year and now his contract is expiring.

But yeah, this isn't great for Pacers' FA plans. That said, I'm not sad about Thad being back.

I watched your team whole season and i just have to say the idea of signing Gordon is not that good. I don't think he fits the system you built.

With this news, if we guarantee Collison tomorrow, And decline Joe Young’s option, we will enter free agency with $12m in cap space, roughly. Waive Al Jefferson and get to $18m. Or, we could use the $12m in cap space, then use Al Jefferson to match salaries in a trade up to $15m in return salary.

Then, after all that, we would then be able to use the room exception.

is there a little more to be gained by renouncing GRob and Poythress? don't they have cap holds?

Those numbers count on renouncing everyone we can at a certain point, when less than 11 players are accounted for, minimum roster charges account. Waiving Poythress saves only around $600k. Same for Ike if need be.

Doesn't surprise me. I didn't think he would wait this long just to leave the Pacers hanging by opting out.

If we keep Collison, our starting 5 is intact. I don't see offering more than 10mm to a reserve.

Is that enough to put Barton, Harris, or Evan's in play? I expect Smart to get starter's money.

Aren't we a bit "front court heavy" as it is? Seems to me the need is greater at the wing.

Oh well, excuses, excuses. Ha! Just kidding ya.

But seriously, it would seem that now the team does have to actually find a trade partner who will take one or more expiring contracts in order to get anything of any magnitude done.

Makes me think that Jefferson is even more likely to be moved. Maybe others as well. So, does this make something like a trade with Denver for Barton more likely? They get the cap space/tax relief they need and the Pacers get a multi-position player? Although I know they think VERY highly of him, so......

If our bigs are Turner, Sabonis and Thad with Leaf *Who knows if he can play in 2018-19* who is the 5th big? I don't see the team as front court heavy. That said we do need a SF. If Cory is getting traded it should be to bring in a SF or open space to sign one, and then bring Lance back to fill the spot left by Lance.

Denver is loaded with PF's Lyles, Milsap, HermanGomez, Faried, Porter Jr, Vanderbilt, Lydon, and Arthur. I'd like to have Lyles and HG and I like Vanderbilt. I wouldn't take Faried or Arthur unless I was getting a #1 pick.

Great to have him back and no hard feelings towards him for testing the market.

I doubt he will stick around all year though and think we will be looking to include him in a trade.

Then guess DEN won't be dealing with you, doubt we'll be making a deal for a 1st w/o both going out, and I'd bet that ain't happening either

I'm hearing that Denver might send Faried to the Lakers with a 2019 #1 for Space.

If we somehow sign Aaron Gordon then yes we'll definitely be front court heavy, in which case I guess we'd trade Thad.

And agree that the bigger need is at wing, but who's available in FA? Definitely not a fan of Jabari, at least not enough to make a big offer. Could take a flyer on the likes of Hood, Hezonja, or Anderson if the price is right maybe. Or as rumors suggest, we could be targeting Barton or Evans who would definitely be less pricey options.

Not a lot of options out there, I think.

Good news.

I think the frontcourt depth / heaviness depends on how much are we willing to engage Leaf and Anibogu next season. We are most likely to lose Al Jefferson and Trevor Booker and will need to find at least one reliable replacement for them. I am hoping it is someone like Thad who can play 3/4.
