No surprises here... I think he'll be in the G-League next year. He's still so young at 23 - shocked if he couldn't still turn this around and play competitively somewhere.

Stuff like that is no beuno if it comes down to a the best 4th place team.

Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

Yes, all the results yesterday were not what we would have preferred. However, today can be a better day - Brazil beating Venezuela would be pretty helpful in us avoiding even getting into any better 4th place team scenarios, and of course a resounding win of 12 points or more over DR would set us up very nicely. Really if we get those 2 results today, we're in excellent shape.

Nik Stauskas waived by the Nets. No surprise either - this was expected with both him and Ennis.

I hope both head to Europe and learn how to play and lead a team. They are both pros who can make good money in Europe. Probably more than in the NBA ala Pangos.

Saw something yesterday on Twitter -- some footage from a game of some Canadian roster against the Chinese. It was very short, but I recognized Dort there. Maybe that was it? As usual, a very bad job from Basketball Can in making fans aware of what's going on, but we shouldn't be surprised at this stage.

A nice in-depth analysis predicting this from the 2018 NBA Manifesto, by Mark Deeds (a pretty amazing project):

With low expectations and demands placed on him due to the nature of how he was acquired, Stauskas got a free audition with the Nets, allowing him to show what he has unburdened by the pressure of his draft slot. Unfortunately, he showed that he did not have much.

Shooting well as advertised, Stauskas has a smooth stroke when his feet are set with enough size to get them away. But given that he is not a fast player, getting open in the first place is not the easiest. The spread Nets’ offence gives any shooters some opportunities, but stand-still shooters are not that hard to come by, and need to stand out in other ways.

Brooklyn were able to turn a similar situation around with Joe Harris, but it took time, time Stauskas’s contractual situation does not give him. A similar size to Harris and armed with a similarly sweet stroke, Stauskas lacks for the strength Harris has, which means he lacks for the defence and the ability to smoothly get to the rim. And this means he lacks much beyond the catchand-shoot open three pointer. Stauskas is good at that, to be sure, but not anything more than that aside from very occasional fill-in stints at point.

In particular, Stauskas is a bad defensive player at this level. He is not strong, he is not fast, he cannot change anyone’s direction, he does not make plays on the ball, and he exhibits a low defensive IQ. He is very unimpactful on this end, and in four years he has gotten no better. The Harris allusion is thus a hopeful one rather than an expected one - while he is two years younger, has Stauskas shown any sign that he will be at that stage in two years time?

Player Plan: Entering free agency. It could be restricted free agency, but there seems little need to extend him a $4,333,932 qualifying offer (shrunk after not meeting starter criteria) that is more value than he has shown. Considering the guard crunch, an unlikely candidate to return; if the Nets didn’t want or need him much this year, why would they do so in future years?

I was hoping the game was right before the DR game and i could catch some of it but i guess not.

I saw a ten second clip on Twitter so yeah I guess that was probably it

Thon Maker made what I believe was his debut with the Australian national team. 13 points, 12 rebounds, and no blocks. Apropos the critique on the Canadian NBA players, only one other Australian NBA player (Dellavedova) was playing.

There was a time when basketball Canada tried to "poach" Maker and have him play for us. It didn't work, but I don't think it's a really big loss. For me, he doesn't bring much more to the table than Boucher and I think he'd have a hard time being an important rotation player if our NBA bigs show up next year.

RJ's bounce is insane in person

He threw down some ridiculous dunks very easily in the warmup

Venezuela crushing Brazil. Up by 21 heading into the 4th.

If that result holds up, along with ours, will be looking at Brazil, Canada, DR, and Venezuela all being 4-1, and all having relatively easy games on Sunday/Monday.

So, in all probability, a 4-way tie at 5-1 once the groups merge.

I’ve been entertained by the game so far. Barrett is impressive so far - good, attacking play. Nembhard with a mental error right at the end of the half, but he’s done well too so far.

Makes it all the more important the we really dominate this second half. Lofty point differential may come in handy in tiebreakers down the road. Us battling back when we were way down against DR in the earlier window may prove really important.

Good first half but I feel like some of the NBA guys take it a little easier than they should be. I saw Cory settle for a couple bad shots, Olynyk dribbling up the court way too much. I get that they are good but honestly no one on this team is good enough to take this DR team so lightly. We need to beat these guys by 20...

Did I see Mark Cuban sitting courtside with Kevin O'Leary?

Return to Toronto Raptors
