I think we have to try and dump abrines and singler together. That should allow us to use the tax mle for a pretty significant upgrade at the backup wing.

I don’t see how it’s possible to dump them for nothing.

Figure a team like Atlanta or Sacramento might take them on for a shot at abrines and maybe a second. Also could include cash to cover most of singler's deal. Alternatively could get a guy making 3-5 mil back that's useful but not in a good situation.

I could see doing that and getting back temple from Sacramento. The savings wouldn’t be much but he’s a great bench guy to have.

It we somehow pulled that off and ownership was also willing to use the mle it would be an amazing off-season and I'd have my expectations way too high going into the year.

Why the sudden pessimism on Abrines? I thought he played really well when he had to take up some of Andre's burn.

Awful defensively, provides nothing but three point shooting offensively. He may be better in a better system, but we're not doing him any favors.

I love the title of this thread. Lyrics from a Jefferson Starship song.

Yeah he wasn't a lock down defender but he hustled, he understood he was having to fill a big hole. His shooting touch is for real, streaky last year but with definite touch. I do not understand why you would give up on a kid so young when he can genuinely provide points/spacing for the bench unit.

He's 25, not that young, and is only capable of doing one positive thing on the court. it's not really giving up on him to acknowledge his weaknesses and determine that it's possible to upgrade the position for the same money. He's a negative impact player who doesn't really fit in on either side of the ball here.

He without doubt fits on the offensive side of the ball for the second unit. He's not going to blossom into an all-star but he can still be a very capable NBA player. 95% of the league are guys who will never be all-stars.

Devin Harris is an underrated fit.

What kind of buyout do you think is realistic? Is Melo leaving 5 million on the table too much to ask? If not and they can dump Singler with a 2nd (which is doable imo), the tax would go down from 145 | 3 | 0 with the current roster to 43 | 23 | 0 (stretching him at 7.6 million over 3 years).

20 million is best case scenario in my opinion. That’s still unlikely.

abrines sucks. he can't make a three unless he's already squared up. he was awful at making them off screens. he's a spot up shooter and that's all he can do. he's daequan cook.
daequan cook was useful when he was on the court with james harden and nick collison. he was out of the league and playing in iran two years later.
the only reason not to trade him or 'give up on him' is that our roster is woefully short on shooting. but i think you can probably dust off brandon rush or someone like that off the scrap heap and get similar productivity.

Traveon Graham would be a nice pickup. Nothing fancy. Just a 3&D lite guy.
Hope everyone has had a good summer so far.

If we assume that Melo would relinquish the taxpayer MLE in a buyout and stretch, doing that would amount to this:
Tax bill with the current roster:
18/19: $ 145 million
19/20: $ 3 million
20/21: $ 0 million
Buyout and stretch:
18/19: $ 42 million
19/20: $ 22 million
20/21: $ 0 million
The anual cap hit over the next three years would be $ 7.4 million. That has implications for the team's tax bill, but not so much on capspace because the main pieces are gonna be making so much money, they won't get under the cap anytime soon anyway.
If they don't find a decent enough trade, I'd just do this. Save yourself the money, use the MLE and leave this disaster in the rearview mirror.
