Re: BREAKING: Lebron to LA (4 years 154M)
So theoretically does Ball stay now if Kawhi is traded to the Lakers? Ball doesn't really fit next to Lebron, his best gift is taken away with LeBron pounding the ball. Lakers probably engage a 3rd team to assist in getting the Spurs what they want and moving Ball around that way? Spurs don't want him. Interesting situation....
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong.
KC: You were asked that question at the news conference announcing Thibodeau's dismissal and you answered yes

If the Lakers land Kawhi and Boogie they have a good shot. If not, not much has changed.
My biggest issue with all of this is that the "Super Teams" appear like they are here to stay. I had hoped Durant to the Dubs was the end of it, but I was a fool to think that.

We went from having to be in rebuild mode for 3-4 years to just needing to be there for 2 more seasons at the very worst.
Plus our ceiling has changed because the Central is now a very weak division.
I don't want to rebuild to be an ECF team
I want to win the Finals
Build it right.
That team doesn't exist in the East. Nor will it for the next 6 years.

He was still the best player in the NBA last season.
He is so above the majority of the league that even when he declines, he will still be a top 10 player most likely until he retires.
He is in decline.
And he is still - at worst - a top 3 player in the league right now. I would max LeBron in a blink of an eye if given the chance.

2 of the best 5 players in the nBa.
Going to be a great WCF
Kawhi is a top notch player - but I wonder if he is a "top 5" player vs say a top 10-15-ish player who looks better due to Pop?
Most Spurs look better due to Pop but Kawhi is not one of them, IMO. Spurs run an elite system, but every team needs a safety valve when the coach stuff doesn't work. In GS, it's usually Durant. On our Bulls title teams, it was MJ. On the Spurs it's Kawhi. He's extremely unassisted on all his shots for a SF, and in the playoffs he's even less assisted and yet his FG% goes up not down.
Pops was quoted as saying Kawhi is basically doing whatever he wants outside of the system.
“He basically tells me what he wants to do now,” Gregg Popovich recently said. "I mean, he’ll take the ball and send the screener away. He’ll decide if he wants to go one-on-one with no screen, no pick … he is much more demonstrative, looks for his shots more. He knows he’s got a green light, and I think that’s the difference."
I think the bigger question with Kawhi is injury, because he's a top 5 talent even if he's not there yet. But missing almost an entire year...there's no way to spin that positively health-wise.

Re: BREAKING: Lebron to LA (4 years 154M)
I actually respect LeBron for finally not signing in order to chase a ring. Had he joined 76ers or Celtics or Rockets it would’ve been the same old stunt but this time I think he is looking more towards the end of his career and establishing his hollywood life, etc. I would be very surprised if the Lakers win a title in the next three years because even with Kawhi (not including his questionable health) I think that team easily loses to GS and possibly even Rockets with a healthy CP3 and OKC with Paul George and Russ. To me, unless Kawhi is back to his Finals MVP form and Cousins joins them and plays well that team isn’t enough to take down Golden State. Only way they might is if injuries impact the other teams and/or KD and Klay leave next off season.

The league is doing quite a bit to try to deter these situations because, while they draw huge playoff ratings, local ratings for all teams matter and there's really no reason to watch a bunch of these small market teams.
But as long as guys like KD are taking discounts to stay in GS, this will be the reality

The NBA has always had superteams. The 50s-60s Celtics. The 80s Celtics. The Showtime Lakers. The 90s Bulls. The 00's Lakers.
It's always taken 2+ stars to win a title. The only difference is in this era, the players use FA as a way to team up and form them. Golden State was truly an 100-year type aberration, though. An all-time great team with a below-market value MVP takes advantage of a huge cap spike that gives them enough room to sign an MVP who happens to be a free agent? It was a huge fluke and I guarantee the NBA won't allow a similar situation to happen again.

I would be shocked if Ball went anywhere. IMO they'll give him some time to develop. Not gonna remake the *entire* team with one signing. At least, that's my gut feeling.
(It would serve LaVar and that whole clan right if they did ship him out, though.)

Re: BREAKING: Lebron to LA (4 years 154M)
Kind of a weird situation for a developing Lakers team. LeBron is signed through the rest of his superstar career (most likely), so there's no dynasty getting set up in LA. This is a short term thing. It should be interesting to find out what the Lakers do as far as development.

While I can't stand LeBron, I'm surprised there's any eye raising at the contract. The guy is worth $100M per year today. $40M is an absolute steal artificially limited by the NBA's max contract situation. He may not be worth $100M by the end of the contract, but he'll probably still be worth $40M.

Nah, he always has an excuse.
His cast wasn't good enough.
He wasn't healthy.
Sagittarius wasn't aligned with pisces the right way.
There's always something. That's fine though, because that way there's absolutely no case for calling him the GOAT.
I htink he doesn't mind going to a weaker team in a loaded conference exactly BECAUSE of the built in excuse. He was looking at that Cavs team, which would be the same next year and realized if he missed the finals next year with them he would have to shoulder that blame.

Ball/Ennis
Caldwell-Pope/Hart
Ingram
James/Kuzma
Zubac
Looks pretty good, better than Cleveland. Will be interesting to see whether Kawhi joins and what other moves they make

The downside is that it puts every single intriguing talent or storyline in the Western conference.
People will think of the top of the East like how people think of the Raptors. The whole conference is like a B squad in comparison.
I really hope we are in line for the next wave of top teams in the next few years. If not Silver is going to have to realign teams just so it looks competitive.
I don’t totally agree. Philly and Boston are both major emerging powers.
The rest of the East sucks though.

Agreed. Although, now we're in serious risk of being sent back to NBA hell.
