I know he's not a reliable source but you have to wonder if Kawhi wouldn't do the same if traded to a team that he doesn't want to be with. Danny and Brad need to have a face-to-face with him so they can get a read on him. Until someone reports that they're meeting then I'm going to remain skeptical that anything gets done. If a meeting leaks that's when I expect things to really start poppin' off.
It's all posturing. I hope Pop and Buford call him out on his bluff.
There's no way that a guy coming off an "injury" that caused him to miss 95% of a season is going to miss out on collecting $20M.
I agree. Also, if he did purposely sit out a year, wouldn't that mean that he didn't fulfill his contact, so basically he would still be under the Spurs control for another season? I suppose he could suit up and just be a malcontent. My memory sucks but the one situation that comes to mind that was similar was Marbury and the Knicks a few years ago.
I've been skimming through the CBA to see if I could find anything on that and haven't yet.
It would be breach of contract, so presumably they could get back his $20M salary, plus any other remedies available under the CBA, but the contract would be broken, so Kawhi wouldn’t be under their control for another year.
Kawhi would most certainly say his quad isn’t healed, and any other motive to sit out is just media speculation, so the Spurs would likely have the burden to show Kawhi isn’t sitting out for injury. Not sure how high that standard of proof is.
