I NEVER said Bud was the only coach doing it. ( I don't think so at least.)

I said I hated that he did it. Particularly moving guys with strong inside games (like Collins) away from his strengths. Bud's offense was built to maximize space for jump shooters...despite the fat his teams featured few dependable jump shooters.

I did not like it when Bud pulled him away for so many possessions.

I don't like it that Lloyd already seems set on doing so. Our offense in Utah looks terrible because we're focusing too much on 3-pt shooting.

We put up 40 3-pointers in Game One. We put up 33 3-pointers in Game Two.

And lost both games by double digits...

Code: Select all

“The 3-point shot is something we believe in strongly,” said Budenholzer, who added he has not considered changes to his lineup to address the offensive woes. “We believe in our players. I think if we continue to move the ball and screen and play with pace and we are getting good open 3’s, that’s something we believe in and we want to continue to do.

“If we start making them at a better percentage and are more efficient offensively, then everything is going to look and feel different.

Whaaaa? That was you?

You strongly suggested it was a Buttenshoulder creation as if other coaches would do the 'back to the basket' thing with all bigs. We tried to tell you it was a league-wide thing but you were steadfast in your criticism of the guy.

Honestly, after seeing how we play in these 2 games, I got my eyes at a half-squint looking at CLP so far. Honestly, after seeing his staff hires, I went to about a quarter-squint so he's not moving in the right direction in kg's book.

Oh, I'm absolutely wondering what Lloyd is doing. I don't think this is his first stint coaching Summer league...and another assistant will be coaching us in Las Vegas. But my healthy skepticism regarding luscious Lloyd is slowly turning to cynicism and doubt.

Do I think Mike Budenholzer invented jump shooting/3-pt shooting big men?

NO. Sam Perkins, Rik Smits were spreading the floor decades before CMB embraced it.

But that 2014 ATL -- Indy series where our #8 seed took the Pacers #1 seed to 7 games and effectively spread the floor behind Pero's perimeter play (rendering All Defense Team Roy Hibbert useless) definitely helped usher in a new era of offensive play at the position.

CMB didn't create it, but he wholeheartedly embraced it to an extent not seen in this franchise...ever?

It improved the team's spacing, but led to undeniable declines in Pero and Horford's numbers. I don't want that for Collins.

The Hawks showed another new wrinkle for Collins against the Grizzlies. He initiated a handful of plays from the elbows, on either side of the lane at the free-throw line. From there Collins can hand the ball off to a teammate, turn and shoot, pass from the elbow or drive to the basket looking to score or pass.

Wished we had done more running the offense thrugh Collins. He was good at it and made the right read.

Yup...agreed. Those pick n rolls with Spellman. He looks like one of the quicker big guys in the league. We got a good one in Collins for sure. Let him expand his game.

Rik Smits didn’t spread the floor with threes if that’s what you meant. He had some jumpers within 15-20 feet but he didn’t spread the floor..he got doubled in the post a lot.

If you guys are worried that Trae isn’t averaging 30 and 10 in summer league we could have Lloyd go take the afternoon off and watch a a Braves game and bring in Lon Kruger and his pee wee style go gettem approach!

I don't think it's the lack of production as much as the terrible efficiency.

Shooting 13% from 3-pt range and 25% from the field overall is undeniably atrocious...especially against scrubs and castoffs who likely wont ever sniff an NBA roster.

Not worried, concerned more about his shot selection, it's bad. Like he's trying to hit a homerun EVERY time. Stop trying to win ROY in summer league.
Relax and run the team.

Man, I have so much respect and appreciation for Jevon Carter.

The fans in Memphis are going to LOVE him.
(If we'd actually kept Luka, Jevon was a guy who'd have likely paired well with him.)

Eggsactly.

It's why I mentioned him being all about him is an issue already. Just run the team, bro. Stats (and more importantly, development) will come. That jakin' up halfcourt shots mess is terrible even if you're making them. When you're not making any ... uh, you (and us, by extension) become (even more of) a laughingstock.

SB NATION: What kind of team do you want to be?

LLOYD PIERCE: I get asked that question all the time. Anytime you go into preconceived notions with what you want to be, that’s a trick situation. My job right now is to get a feel for who I have. The scary part of the preconceived notion, you spend a lot of time, and then all of a sudden: that’s not going to work. I don’t want to put myself in a corner. This is who we’re going to be, this is how we’re going to be.

SB: Play fast, but not in a hurry, right?

LP: How much movement can you create, whether it’s the ball or body movement. You’ll see defenses break down. You’ll see guys enjoy playing together. It’s not static basketball. We’re not going to be good enough to play static basketball.

I know the consensus is 'Warriors' East but we aren't them.
Didn't Schlenk say he liked Trae's ability to run the PnR and his ability to make the pass with either hand.
Pierce ran the defense in Philly. With Simmons running point not much PnR perhaps?

“This summer a 14-second shot clock was implemented as the Hawks summer league roster prepared for play in Utah and in Las Vegas. Pierce has stated that playing with pace will be one of the primary areas of emphasis this season.”

Trae clearly seems to be comfortable at playing with pace, and I’ve read interviews suggesting he prefers it. New SG acquisition Hamilton is also said to have this skill. Lin when healthy does.

Steve Nash: ‘A white guy from Canada with swag’

Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce talks about his friendship with Hall of Famer and former teammate Steve Nash

I thought I knew all about basketball … until I met Stephen Nash.

He shot 3s off the dribble effortlessly, threw the best lobs and had more swag than any player I’ve ever played with. And he backed it up. Something was just unreal about him. This guy is from British Columbia? Really? And he likes Nas’ new album, Illmatic?

I had never known a white guy from Canada with swag and mad hoop skills, and who was into hip-hop … until I met Stephen Nash!

Congrats to my teammate, my “coach,” but more importantly, my friend.

For the young'ns:

Best known for their singles “I Wanna Sex You Up”, “I Adore Mi Amor” and “All 4 Love”, the group has sold over 12 million records worldwide and...were considered the leaders of a resurgence of post-doo-wop harmony group singing in the early 1990s. In the 1990s, they were known for wearing bright-colored suits and for their choreography, as well as for being a racially diverse group, which was rare at the time. AM Music Entertainment

Really good that the coach has had profound influence from one of the greatest point guards ever.

I hope Trey is already working with him now.
