Who will have a better 3FG% next year, SJ or Dre?

If nothing else it sounds like this should be entertaining

For reference... Stanley shot 28% from three this past season.

https://www.nba.com/pistons/features/drummond-gives-thumbs-casey-hire-everybodys-excited-it
Drummond has posted Instagram pictures of himself shooting perimeter shots in recent weeks and Casey has given him no indication he’ll dissuade putting it into his repertoire. Toronto center Jonas Valanciunas came into last season with four career 3-point attempts, then averaged one per game in 2017-18. Drummond’s 30 career attempts have been almost exclusively end-of-shot-clock or end-of-quarter heaves, but that figures to change next season.

“He told me to work on ballhandling, work on the corner three,” Drummond said. “I’ve obviously worked on my post work and free throws. Just adding stuff to my game. I’m really excited for it. Looking forward to doing this part of the game, being more involved in the offense and I think he’s going to use me the right way.”

Anything to keep Andre away from 10 foot hook shots!

JV last year randomly went up to 74 3pt attempts, and managed to hit 40%, so Dre might play the same role

Honestly I'm excited about Andre shooting threes. His form was so bad on his free throw before and then he fixed it last year with a much better looking form and made a big improvement at the line. Now this offseason he takes the improvement of his free throw form and puts it into his jumper. Even if he is just an ok shooter if he can just be a threat it's going to make the offense so much better because our spacing was so bad last year.

Here is a 13 minute video of Dre working on his jumper.

Drummond with a semblance of a 3pt shot makes him a top 5 player...in 2K. In real life it’s also exciting.

My bet? Drummond will shoot about 17 threes next year, sink 5 of them, and that'll be enough to beat out Stanley's percentage.

Lots of guys can make it look good open in practice. In a real game situation everything changes. I'll be impressed when I see it on the floor and not a moment sooner.

It's true though I've always felt like those rare occasions that he gets the ball late in the clock and has to take a jumper it looks a lot more comfortable than his post-offense (or even his free throws).

Granted, that could be because it's kind of a "freebie" where no one would get mad at him taking it if he misses. Big difference in pressure when you're taking a 3 with 14 seconds left on the shot clock.

I think he'll take one or two per game for the first couple weeks of the season and how it goes from there will depend on if he's 1-for-14 heading into week #3

Yeah, I mean, if he actually managed to become even a passable in game 3 point shooter the significance to the rest of the team can't be overstated.

There's just cause for skepticism there.

I remember one offseason Dwight Howard was talking about developing a 3 point shot. I don't remember seeing any tape but there might have been. That certainly never went anywhere.

Casey will let Andre shoot that's the biggest thing. Casey is a fan of widening a player's talent and letting do what they want on the court and that's why he was so loved in Toronto. The man has respect because he gives respect but as long as you can produce. He'll let you do on the court what you believe in. That's for sure.

Andre is talented enough to learn how to shoot.

It's just a matter of confidence, and Casey obviously is good at inspiring confidence. Just the threat of the 3 alone can space the floor for everyone. If he can even do 30% in game, it can really help the team.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Blake, Cousins, and Horford all immediately come to mind as bigs who had no semblance of a 3 ball during the early years of their careers but developed a solid jumpshot from distance later on.

So they're is a precedent and a glimmer of hope that Dre can develop a serviceable longball.

There is however 1 glaring difference between Dre and the guys on the list above. Dre is not nearly as skilled offensively as those other guys, and they all had solid jumpshots from inside the arc before eventually stretching it out to 3 distance. Dre has a long way to develop an effective/reliable jumpshot from anywhere, let alone from distance.

Still, short of him going into Smoove type chuck mode, this practice/training can only help.

In 74 games next year, Stanley Johnson will manage to shoot 34.5% from 3 next year.

I voted Stanley. (Like I know?) I don't get the people who see Drummond working hard at basketball skills and complain? Drummond is back on my benefit of the doubt list after his FT shooting and general improvement last season.

would love to trade Stanley for Trey Burke now that we have GR3. I'm just about done expecting anything out of Stanley and GR3 has the same upside but with a 3 point shot.

Honestly, if Stanley never pans out, I think SVG is a huge part of the blame. Maybe he’s not destined to be an all star, but SVG broke his spirit.
