Re: Who should we target for backup PG?
I can't see why Shabazz would not be signed by now if he wasn't our top choice with the MLE. He won't earn more than the MLE. Perhaps the trade market looks promising. Beverly is a one year deal and can be had with the TPE that becomes available tomorrow, July 6. Shabazz maybe wants a multi-year deal.

hell naw to tony parker. thibs is a madman when it comes to giving away talented young players - i'm sure we can deal for tyus jones
a major hip surgery
i'd say putting up some better numbers in LA was impressive, but jordan clarkson made it clear how much those are worth when you're actually trying to win games

Ugh, are we really going to revert to overpaying guys past their prime again?
The man scored 50 something points in a playoff game less than two years ago with Boston! How on God's Green Earth is he past his prime?!?

He also averaged over 15 PPG and 5 APG last season, now obviously his numbers will take a hit in a backup role but you're telling me you wouldn't take that kind of talent coming off of your bench?

Re: Who should we target for backup PG?
IT is too ball dominant for Monk. We have to develop Monk as a #1 scorer. I didn't want backup PG to stress me out and when I saw we met with Tyreke Evans I was feeling relieved to not have to go through this crap again. But here we go. I'm stressed again.

I'm not saying I really want IT, but a ball dominant backup PG that can actually score is a massive step up from the solutions we've had pretty much every year other than when Lin was in town. I wouldn't mind pushing Monk off ball.

Re: Who should we target for backup PG?
IT isn't going to sign with us, we have too much similar talent that would take away opportunity from him. I wouldn't worry about him coming to Charlotte. I'm confident we're waiting for the moratorium to end tomorrow to use the TPE for a trade. Napier and Parker are fall back options.

naw. and i realllllllllly don't trust anyone's offensive production in a system like LAs. second highest pace in the league - and you can never trust numbers for players on high pace/low win teams like that. either way though...
new coach, new system, same players for the most part - a guy as ball dominant as IT doesn't exactly enrich the development or evaluation process. our biggest need at the backup spot is a guy who can play defense (or at least tries lol).
I actually like IT, but between Kemba and Monk I'm pretty sure we got that base covered (and if we don't its better to find out now rather than later). If anyone could use him its NOLA, Utah, or Orlando.

I've gotta think Lin is available for a fairly low price in a trade. Is it worth taking a shot on him again post-injury assuming he will be close to the same player?

on absolute trash efficiency, and he was probably the worst defensive starter in the league when he was healthy.

Boston, Cleveland, and LA all gave up on him within 1 year. Not sure what anyone would see in the guy. He was a top scorer before the injury, but he's toast now.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

to be fair, he shouldn't have even played this past year - at least not so soon. rushing back combined with playing through the injury the year prior? you're not gonna play well. especially when your only calling card in the league is to score

Out of whose left, I'd go
1 Shabazz Napier
2 Mario Chalmers
3 Tony Parker

I wonder if the MLE is enough for Smart in this environment
Shabazz/IT are 1 and 1a choices if Marcus can't be gotten for the MLE

I think if Mitch doesnt want to or cant trade for a pg an mle offer for smart would be risk-free. Just be straight and tell Shabazz or Parker that they are second in line and wait 3 days for bostons answer. We can offer them the most money still.

I would love to get Smart. He'd want a 1 year deal but that works.

Re: Who should we target for backup PG?
I don't understand why a team like Memphis hasn't already offered Smart the MLE. I guess Smart's agent is still hoping that the Celtics will pay him more? If so I think they will be waiting in vain, Ainge isn't going to pay any more than he has to. It's likely the MLE or the QO for Smart, I'd take the latter if I was him.

The qualifying offer is less. Why would you take that over full MLE?

Because more teams will have cap space next summer and they won't have to deal with the RFA waiting period because he'll be unrestricted. There are more teams with max cap space than there are players that are worth it, several players are going to get overpaid because of that - Smart is a prime candidate to be one of them.
