And for people who are super upset about the potential re-signing, then understand this: The Bulls are not signing him for who he is now. They are signing him for who he might become. Just turned 23, crazy athletic, has some serious basketball talent.

Not saying that I necessarily agree with it because I love stats too, but this should be obvious.

Judging players per 36 is a flawed concept.

Not matching would be a flawed concept too

Please explain this reasoning. And please do take into account the financial concept of "sunk costs."

Not matching a bad player on a bad contract?

Flawless if anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if Markkanen stagnates next season because Dunn and Lavine will think they're hotshots.

That song doesn't play so well in a player's 3rd season.

Stop. You can not support terrible contracts. You must be related to Garpax.

You support the team no matter what - that is what being a fan is.

I have hated GarPax for 5+ years and I hate the contract. I will be rooting my balls off for Lavine though.

You and I have agreed on a LOT of things over the years. We're both old-school fans. But I couldn't disagree with you more on this issue.

Being a fan assuredly does NOT mean supporting your team no matter what. If you love the team and believe that it's being run into the ground by mediocre minds, you can hope for the kind of results that will get those mediocre minds out of the ridiculously overpaid positions that they currently inhabit. That's where some of us have been for the past year plus .

Listen, these are the kind of moves that remind me that the Bulls will have to luck into a contender and don't have the braintrust to build one but it doesn't mean I am going to stop rooting for them.

Trust me, I am all for firing GarPax and going about this the right way. But I also understand that that is not going to happen with this franchise.

I remember the last time they had a young, super-athletic player coming off a torn ACL

Well, the bad part is that we matched.

The good part is that we have certainty now. I expect the rest of the ones to be made quickly as we prepare for training camp.

Dunn / Payne / Grant
Lavine / Grant/ Kilpatrick
Valentine / Hutch / Holiday
Lauri / Portis
Lopez /Wendell/ Felicio

Got to see how it unfurls. I am quietly optimistic.

If only I got paid for what I might become with no repercussions if I end up not showing up to the office for the next 4-year.

And that's not even comparable either.

Rose was amazing before his torn ACL.

Lavine was literally the exact same player as he is now.

So who is last starter announced in introductions? Lavine or Markkanen? ;-)

Although I think we overpaid by $2 mil per year, the fact is that you need someone like Zach to be your safety valve player that can get off his own shot. Who on our roster can do that? Dunn has a hard time finishing and Lauri is not the best at creating his own shot off the dribble. Boston has multiple players that can create their own offense in Tatum, Brown, Irving and Hayward. Who we got? If we lost Zach, defenses would focus on shutting down Lauri. I don't think we can count on Carter and Hutchison to be our offensive saviors.

And F*** Vlade and Kings!

You can always trade him considering how young he is. There will always be a GM willing to take on the risk of a 25-26 year old Lavine. And if it pans out, then good thing we matched.

Now we all must pray that Zach does well enough to be tradable asset

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

Niko was always a positive player to winning. He just looked awkward at times doing it. He’s basically the polar opposite of Lavine.

Damn dude where you been??

In fan hibernation since my favorite player got traded and other fans didn't want to hear my dismay. ;-)

Still love the Bulls oh so much. Following the Sixers more closely these days since I live on the EC and my kids support the team. Really like the Sixers' direction minus Colangelo's short-lived idiocracy. But of course the Bulls will always, always be #1.

Hope you're doing well.

I dunno…..…….I still have mixed feelings about this.

Booker/Wiggins got maxed out at 5/148 (approximately).

Gary Harris got 4/84.

Allen Crabbe got 04/75.

I'm not crazy about this deal, but this strikes me as a reasonable going rate for a young big minute SG with upside, even if he does have flaws.

The cap is going up the next couple years, and if the deal is front loaded, there's a good chance that Zach's salary isn't much more than 15-17% of your capspace during the last two years of his contract, which will be his physical prime. That's not too too bad, even if he only realizes a middling version of his potential self.

For me 04/80 was the exact dividing line in the sand at which I decided whether or not to keep him or not, so I'm about as close to 50/50 on this as you can get.

Right now I think there's a 10-20% chance Zach can become a Bradley Beal/Demar DeRozan level player, in which case this contract looks very nice.

I think there's a 30-50% chance that Zach becomes a better-put together version of his current self, but not someone special. This is somewhere between a really solid 6th man (lower end) or a fringe all-star (high end). In this case the contract is either modestly helpful or detrimental, but probably not something that makes or breaks the rebuild.

The last 20-30% is that Zach either gets re-injured, or just flatlines as a non-aware mental pygmy who never jives with Lauri, Kris, or anyone else we bring in and he hurts the team. In this scenario the contract sucks.
