He has a ton of upside and yeah, he’s a project, but I think in two years he’s going to be seen as one of the top prospects in this draft. If my two top guys are off the board I would try to trade back for Simons.

Do you still feel the same way about him after the combine?

Yeah, I still like him, but I also understand he’s a few years away from reaching that potential.

Updated. Zhaire Smith and Mitchell Robinson jumped for me after the pro day. Smith’s handle looks really good and Robinson looks super underrated.

Last time I’m updating before the draft. Not changing anything.

Spoiler:
Any fits you particularly like? Which players are more and which are less likely to reach their potential after the draft in your eyes?

Hard to say until free agency, but I have a list of guys in good locations I think will get the opportunity. I think all of the top 10 guys will get plenty opportunity.
While I like Luka Doncic in Dallas, I’m not sure playing him as a handling wing is going to maximize his potential. He has the potential to be stuck in a type of mold now where he isn’t the lead handler and could cap his ceiling. Knowing how Carlisle runs his offense, his guards can’t be ball-dominating.
I know people are pooping on Bagley to the Kings, but I think it’s a great fit. Much needed offensive rebounding, another playmaker on the floor and that team instantly becomes more athletic. Also think Bagley and Fox running the floor together can be lethal if coached correctly. I just don’t really have faith in Kings coach to make it work, but it definitely has potential to work out.
Wendell Carter is in a great place just because the Bulls are historically good with bigs that can post up and they’ll give him plenty of opportunity. I also love Hutchison there. They needed size on the wing and he’s one of the best transition players in college so he’ll help them get easy buckets off of turnovers.
I love Collin Sexton for the Cavaliers, they’ve needed energy and someone to get after 50/50 balls. They’ve also needed a guy that go after guys on the dribble. Sexton is so competitive, he’ll go after defenders off the dribble and can make the game easier for the players around him. I mostly think he’s a much needed injection to that whole team, I can’t see him not making the rotation.
Mikal Bridges is huge for the Suns. Not huge of Ayton there till he proves he can defend because if he can’t itll be a trainwreck. But Mikal brings two things they’ve missed in big ways, shooting and defense. They might even start him with Booker as a point guard, which I am a huge fan for. Suns did really good in the draft, really think all of the guys they drafted fit well other than Ayton’s defense. And if Ayton proves me wrong and plays well on defense, thats a great fit too.
If Michael Porter can be able to play at his worst he’s better than Wilson Chandler, who is always injured anyway. But I like Vanderbilt if he can get minutes just because they need his defense and rebounding. And I don’t expect him to get many minutes, but I love Thomas Welsh’s fit with the Nuggets.
Donte DiVicenzo with the Bucks is something they really needed, just depth and someone they can rely on to make the right play. They just have so many unreliable players.
Lonnie Walker to the Spurs. They sorely needed athleticism and he could be great in the future next to Dejounte Murray. Also perfect teacher in Pop.
For the Hawks, Trae Young is okay, but I’m afraid this is another Oklahoma situation where they allow him to chuck shots and again he has bad teammates who can’t shoot. Luckily, I think Huerter and Spellman are great pickups to play beside Young. The problem is the rest of the roster, but we’ll see how free agency is with them.
For a Timberwolves team that needed depth, Okogie and Bates-Diop are in a prefect place. I actually think both are in a position to show their skills and they could both have big years for their team. My guess is that Thibs will sign bigger names in free agency and have these two on the bench this year though. Lets hope it doesn’t come to that, but Thibs prefers not to play rookies.
Grayson Allen to the Jazz is scary for other teams. The tandem of Allen and Mitchell on the floor together is going to be hard to stop on offense. I actually think they’ll be really exciting together. I also think Allen’s game will be similar to Mitchell’s at the next level.
I like Aaron Holiday for the Pacers because I think they’ll be able to mold him into a Darren Collison-type player. He already has a great three point shot, defends and is really quick and explosive. Alize Johnson is also a great fit because he can run and grab boards.
Anfernee Simons is a great pick for the Blazers. He needs time to develop, but they have two great players in the same mold that he can learn from in Lillard and McCollum. In the long term I think drafting him will pay off.
Robert Williams to the Celtics because Brad Stevens can get him to play the right way and to the best of his ability.
Dzanan Musa, I think will fit great with the fast-pace offense of the Nets, especially with a young team he’ll find the minutes where he might be able to earn starting privileges.
Jaren Jackson isn’t a great fit as a power forward next to Gasol, but I think he can make it work because of his defensive ability. Jevon Carter just fits that team so much, they needed more shooting and he’s an underrated shooter. They also desperately needed a back up point guard and another guy who can defend the wing. Carter brings all of that. He should earn minutes pretty early.
Jalen Brunson and Ray Spalding to the Mavericks. Brunson is just perfect for Carlisle in that can shoot, post up and reads the floor well. He reminds me of a player that would be on their championship Mavs team. Ray Spalding is just needed for their offensive rebounding. They desperately need rebounds with Dirk still starting. I actually can envision a lineup where Spalding is a starter before the end of the year. He has the length to cover for their interior defense deficiencies as well.
Khyri Thomas and Bruce Brown for the Pistons. They were starting Langston Galloway at shooting guard because he was better than Kennard at defending guards and wings. Thomas and Brown give them a guy who can actually defend guys. On top of that Brown is one of the better pick and roll players in college. He should be pretty dangerous on that end with this team. If he can shoot he’s probably a guaranteed starter.
I like Shake Milton and Landry Shamet for the 76ers just because they’re both great shooters (probably the two best in the class) who can also make plays. If either works out it’s a win for the team. Zhaire Smith I like too, but it’s hard to see him getting minutes this year. Likely developing in the background. However I don’t see how Furkan Korkmaz gets minutes next year if all these guys are on the roster. And are they using any of their cap space in free agency? Do they re-sign Redick, who was influential to them in getting to the Playoffs and winning in the playoffs?
Those are ones I like.
