Sorry. Who's a better comparison for yall then? Pippen? Maybe Wade?
Ugh. This season can't start soon enough.
There really are not good comps for Smart IMO. Pretty unique player.
Not really Patrick Beverly who is a better shooter but was Smarts age when he started in the league (24).
I love Smart but am really ok with whatever happens aside from matching an offer north of 15 million per year. Really anything above 4/55 or so is probably a bad contract and turns him into negative value as a trade asset. If we match an offer like that we are keeping him for the full contract and hoping for the best.
If we let him go I am cool with that and giving Bird a shot at some of his minutes. I hope for his sake that he doesn’t end up in Sac though...also for the sake of the pick.

Well, I'm not a Smart fan (not a hater either...), but I don't want IT near the team, and Smart >>>>>>>>>>>> IT.
Smart for $8 million. More than that, he can go to the Kings.

$15 a year? When no one else is offering $10?

It seems there's no demand for him at this point.
Honestly yeah basically this.
We're all RealGM posters, we've all read his fans analysis and watched his entire career. Nothing anyone is going to bring up will be a new perspective.
I could see the Kings just throwing out money at Smart... but I mean realistically these teams should be smart enough to do what the other teams in the NBA are doing.
So instead of signing Smart who isn't someone you want to waste your cap space on to a long term contract... just give him a big one year salary.
Kings have room, if they really can't get anyone else they can just throw Smart 18 mllion for one season, perserve their cap room for next season, have one year where their rookies "benefit" from Smart's "culture impact" but most importantly gets the **** out of the way next year so their young guns have the minutes they need to develop. The Kings after only maybe the Suns have endless young prospects that need minutes at every position and shouldn't waste it on stop gap role players like Smart.
Who is Sac's Pres/GM? If he gives Smart $16 million for one year he should be fired before the ink dries.

I've had Smart at high of 12 m. With Rozier Hayward Kyrie and a back up PG that is plenty of ball handlers. I just don't think you can justify intangibles over almost no offensive improvement. You pay based on projecting future value and his is not going to go much higher at all

Vlade Divac.
And why so. If you truly believe Smart is a culture changer then it's better than giving Smart 13 million for 4 years when you have promising prospects all over your roster in Fox, Hield, Jackson, Giles, Bagley, WCS. Bogdan, Skal, Frank Mason.
You also don't have your pick this year. So all your life should be about is helping your very young team develop and have the right leadership. While not being the moron that ties up your cap in a bench player for years and instead hopes to get lucky with signing the next IT like the Suns did or some player with untapped potential which honestly could be Parker.
Taking on Smart for one year if you think he can change your culture is a fine move, and it aligns with what almost all teams are doing with cap space.
Hell it's not too far of from what the Kings did last year with their vet signings. Just hold the course and don't overpay for role players and hope your young players develop to make you a destination to nab one of the higher quality free agents in the future.

Smart is better than IT? The guy who carried the C's on his little back when they were so flawed? I don't want him back but Jesus Christmas this board has lost their collective minds on Smart. First someone wants to give him $15m a year and now you're saying he's better than IT? Wow we have different views on the game. (caveat to say who knows what IT is at this point)

Smart is healthy, IT is not.
Smart is a team player, IT is not.
We have enough scorers with Kyrie, Hayward, Jaylen, Tatum and Morris. We need passers. The best offensive Smart's skill, is the pass.
IT right now, is just another man, not even close to his great season. All the dramas with the Brink trucks, Cleveland, video tribute, Lakers... it shows how big IT's ego affect his free agency.

Useful thanks.
Offer sheets for RFAs must be a minimum of 3 years. Can't sign him to 1 year deals.

What % to the cap is $16 million? I just don't see it for an energy guy. I'll never doubt his D but I see him as an end of the bench player on a championship team.

He is TODAY and thats all that matters. IT is not going to ever be the same player we saw a few years ago.

Idk the % but it's 1 year so that doesn't really matter. They don't get to keep the money if they don't spend it.
That said JJ Reddick signed for what 21 million for 1 season last year for a then 28 win 76ers team with promising but injury prone young players.
They probably were just hoping to get to .500 as a team and he'd be a locker room leader. Everything turned out to be more. Maybe the Kings get lucky with 1 or 2 of their young players and Smart becomes important for them.
Again it's 1 year, and they're off the hook, they're not paying luxury tax for this contract or anything like that either.
