Not really Patrick Beverly who is a better shooter but was Smarts age when he started in the league (24).

I love Smart but am really ok with whatever happens aside from matching an offer north of 15 million per year. Really anything above 4/55 or so is probably a bad contract and turns him into negative value as a trade asset. If we match an offer like that we are keeping him for the full contract and hoping for the best.

If we let him go I am cool with that and giving Bird a shot at some of his minutes. I hope for his sake that he doesn’t end up in Sac though...also for the sake of the pick.

$15 a year? When no one else is offering $10?

https://vimeo.com/251502978

Read what I said a little more carefully. I was not advocating the Cs offer him that.

My bad. Going through a few threads at once quickly.

For what it's worth it seems like the vet min is not low balling IT these days.

Honestly looks like the guy should do 1 year in Europe or the Chinese league and see if he can prove he's healthy to get a chance to give him a 1 year prove it deal next off season.

I see that but I would prefer another team low balling him after we traded him to LeBron's pit. I agee with te trade we made but I'm against 3 years of low ballng to conclude that...

Wow we have different views on the game. (caveat to say who knows what IT is at this point)

Smart is healthy, IT is not.
Smart is a team player, IT is not.
We have enough scorers with Kyrie, Hayward, Jaylen, Tatum and Morris. We need passers. The best offensive Smart's skill, is the pass.
IT right now, is just another man, not even close to his great season. All the dramas with the Brink trucks, Cleveland, video tribute, Lakers... it shows how big IT's ego affect his free agency.

Amm, Smart is not a team player. A guy who shoots 36% from the field and jacks up 10 shots a game is far from a team player. IT shot over 45% from the field for us. Yes Smart is a greater defender(not even a question), but when healthy him and IT are not in the same universe on offense. IT is a menace on offense.

Come on. Smart is not a selfish player. The guy is a warrior, throwing his body to every loose ball and taking charges against guys bigger than him. He takes so stupid shots, I'm with you on it. But overall, this guy is all about TEAM.

And while IT was a better offensive player, and was also a terrible defender who cost us a lot because of teams abusing him and his tiny size.

If you can pour in 30 a night that makes up for a lot of mini-me. Throw contracts out the window. If you're picking your squad on the playground (I know the NBA is not that but go with me here) you'd take Smart over IT?

IT didn't cost Boston anything he transformed this team from a tankfest into a contender, even if a somewhat fake one. He recruited Horford and Haywood here as FA's and he was salary fodder in bringing Irving. Don't misrepresent what that guy did for this franchise. It broke bad for him life is not fair but lets not act like he didn't go from back up PG to MVP candidate while he was here. It happened and it was awesome.

I absolutely loved IT and his timing/situation/etc just broke bad for him like you say (family tragedies aside) but lets not get carried away. He's still a millionaire for doing what I did for free (other than a college tuition) for 30 years.

Forgive me. I tend to exaggerate a bit. But point still stands. I'm sure everyone else got the point.

Sorry. Who's a better comparison for yall then? Pippen? Maybe Wade?

Ugh. This season can't start soon enough.

Pippen or Wade? You are **** delusional, man.

More like Tony Allen or a MUCH, MUCH lesser Draymond (in terms of impact on wins).

Now I understand why you have been so contentious on this: you falsely believe that fans of Smart think he's some sort of superstar. Ridiculous, lol.

Tony Allen is athletic, can attack the paint, not a good passer, and doesn't shoot 3's.... How in the hell is he similar to Smart?? Again... This a comparison only a Boston fan would make but they hold both players in super high regard.

Did you miss the bold? Of course they aren't similar, Dray and Allen just had a similar defensive impact in wins.

I was pointing out that your idea that a single person on here thinks Smart is anywhere near Wade or Pippen's level is ridiculous. You cannot actually think Smart fans rate him that highly, lol.

LOL at 10. The only way he even sniffs that is from a 3 year deal with the C's and only because he means more/is a great fit. I still think he's in the QOffer range.

They can get a d specialist who is hungry and can't shoot for next to nothing. Will he be as good at the role as MS, almost suredly not but they can get 80% of that for 20% of what people on this board think MS is worth.

If anyone else were to offer Smart a contract this summer (Kings), my gut tells me the most we would match at is 4/$48

Yup that was the caveat. IF. IF. IF. The caveat. IT can come back to 75% of his former self he's a much better player.

75%?????? Nope, he’d have to be at 100% to be better than Smart. He’s light years ahead of him offensively when healthy and he’s light years behind him defensively even when he’s 100% healthy. If he’s even a little slower or can’t move as well then he loses whatever edge he had offensively and simply becomes another guy trying to score who can’t guard anyone on the floor and is a liability.

Yup, every single time based on who they are TODAY. IT is not the same player at all and to prove my point I’d have Smart guard him for a while to show you how he’d shut him out completely.

He should've taken the extension when he was offered it last season. That already looks like it would've been an overpay based on the deals this summer.

Return to Boston Celtics
