The person I would not be surprised to see courted in the near future is Ettore Messina. I'd imagine being Popovich's designated successor is no longer the plum job that it once was.

Maybe not great for Kawhi acquisition & retention, but Buford's a great get for a GM, if they can. Even considering there may be a little chicken & egg thing with Pop making the players look better, RC's still got a great track record.

The writer, Tim Bontemps, is basically a good guy. But he's far from perfect. E.g., the same article says that Isaiah Thomas has already worn out his welcome in Phoenix once, which doesn't feel like an accurate take to me.

Are you joking? Bontemps is **** awful. He killed Ainge for not trading Rozier and picks for Serge Ibaka, then he killed Ainge for trading down to get Tatum, then he killed Ainge for trading for Kyrie. He either hates the Celtics or is just completely clueless, and probably both.
"Danny Ainge needs to shut the **** up and manage his own team. He was the biggest whiner when he was playing, and I know that because I coached against him."

Right now there is a staring contest going on in the Kawhi Leonard trade situation, each side waiting for the other to blink. On one side are the Philadelphia 76ers, Lakers, and any other team trying to get into the trade mix, all hoping that the Spurs will lower their incredibly high trade demands for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year. On the other side there is the Spurs, waiting for the Sixers/Lakers/anyone to up their offers and start putting in their best (or near best) prospects.

“It seems like every other player is putting out a video on social media of them working out,” said the Eastern Conference GM. “If Kawhi did one, he’d instantly get 35,000 hits, and half of them would be from NBA GMs. How can you make a deal or even an offer without knowing if he can play? He’s got to be seen. If he came out and played in preseason and looked good, you’d definitely see teams trying harder to get him.”

i thought Yiannis is killing it atm in terms of jersey / shoes sales. Sorry could be wrong. I know milwakee doesn't sound like california or new york. But Frankly i think you often find players who are more than the franchise. In that respect both greek freak and Kahway can be that. And Bucks could probably make the deal work financially / salary / trade wise.

Not routing for 'fear the deer' btw. I'm just perplexed as to no team in the east other than Philly (and to a lesser extent Boston and Toronto apparently!)

Giannis is killing it and has his own shoe and it sounds like a better deal than Leonard. But if he is wary of sharing LA with Lebron no way he is sharing MIL with Giannis. This isn't going to go well so in some ways it might be better to just stay out of it. Leonard is basically taking on real FA and sneaker FA at the same time next year and it is probably going to end badly for him because he is going to take a pretty big PR hit so he isn't going to get the shoe offers he is expecting and if he screws with Nike enough they might pull the deal they already offered.

What basically is going on is Leonard is pissing away a 5 year 205 mil dollar contract so he can sign a 4 year 136 mil contract (or 5 years 166 mil) because he wants 5 mil more a year on sneaker deal. What is the point of giving up $40 mil to get $20 mil especially when it won't work? I still think this just ends with Leonard re-signing with the Spurs because it is such a **** show nobody is going to want to get involved.

that's because uncle knucklehead is calling the shots....

I think Leonard might just have to show up in a Key West police station in pajama bottoms and no shoes and say he just escaped from a year long kidnapping and he doesn't even have an Uncle. "Get me some food, a doctor, and Coach Popovich on the phone please."

Your missing the part where the Spurs are really just hoping Leonard fires his agent and his uncle and comes to his senses.

369 pages and counting and not one solid stitch of evidence he's coming here. This has to be a record and this whole saga is becoming quite nauseating already. Wherever Kawhi plays, his stats better be off the charts. I also believe wherever he goes, he's probably going to receive the 2nd most press questions this season after Lebron James. He better be ready. So much for not liking the limelight, as he's way beyond that now. He will be absolutely bombarded with questions all season.

Saw this on the Spurs' reddit. For those of you who say Kawhi doesn't get endorsement opportunities in San Antonio I give you this!

Could be something. Or could be nothing. Derozan wipes out instagram account. Spurs? Lakers? Nothing at all but he got sick of it?

On a side note, checked the Raptors forums to see if there is any news and they have a thread declaring that Nick Nurse is the next Brad Stevens.

Good times with that board. Nurse is 9 years older in his first season as head coach, and Brad is entering his 5th. Brad took a major NCAA team to the final 4. Nurse coached some team you've never heard of.

Good luck Lebronto.
