Wouldn't have beaten Philly without Baines. Smart probably yes.

It seemed like it because you had such a low expectation of him. It's like anytime Scalabrine used to make a play, everyone would love it. Stop with Baynes BS. I like him, but come on now.

I gotta say as nicely as I can - this is so wrong. Baynes made more big plays in big spots in one series than Scal ever made in his life including AAU and CYO.

You meant "one-dimensional," you spelled "effect" wrong, your take on Smart's impact reveals someone who didn't watch the playoffs, and your prediction of your garbage team's future performance is biased and naive.

Other than that, A+++ post, would read again.

There is anything on the Celtics roster that isn’t garbage other than Brown/Tatum. Irving/Hayward will never be the same. Horford old. Smart overrated role player, who has no great ‘affect’ on the Celtics or any other team winning anything. Rozier is limited.

The Celtics are overrated garbage who are going down. And your a disrespectful talking about teams with recent pasts with disdain

Wat?

I get it. Can't feel great that we have your pick next year

Are you assuming Smart will be similarly injured every season?

Are you assuming the Celtics will be similarly injured every season thus giving him an elevated role?

No. Your first clue might have been the mention of Kyrie and Hayward in what you quoted. :)

How does him being injured in FEB impact him in the playoffs?

Who is he going to move past on that list of 7 players in front of him?
Irving
Hayward
Horford
Tatum
Brown
Rozier
Baynes
He isn't unless he gets better offensively. Then you factor in Theis who was better than him in the regular season in the end Marcus Smart is you 9th best player and I don't know how that changes.

Smart missed the first games of the playoffs with an injured hand. So I don't understand the February reference.

It’s really obvious what will happen. One of 4 things:
1. Smart accepts the Cs’ offer on a multi year deal.
2. Smart gets an offer sheet from a team under the cap and the Cs match or pass.
3. Smart plays for the QO.
4. Maybe a S&T but I see that as the least likely.

If I take your depth chart as accurate, which I might not since Marcus may play while a better offensive player sits for stretches due to Marcus' defense, there is still one sad reality in terms of the NBA.

Your top 7 players will rarely be healthy together at the same time. We saw this in the playoffs. Love injured for the Cavs, Iggy and Curry with the Cavs, Chris Paul for Houston, and of course our team was the walking wounded. Now obviously I am hoping for better luck this year and for Hayward to play more than 5 minutes and for Irving not to completely miss the playoffs but in today's NBA assuming everyone is going to be 100% in the playoffs is wishful thinking.

Hah this^ I wanted to bring something interesting to the board by going to the summer league at Dyckman Park but if you saw my posts in the summer league thread that hasn't panned out (yet still have some hope).

3. 30%
4. 2%

Starting 5 and Morris.

In my opinion Smart was much more impactful than Morris without question and likely Baynes as well

For all the talk about how great a defender Marcus is, it was Baynes with NBA #1 defensive rating. Baynes is a role player and he played his role perfectly. He took the shots he can make within flow of system. There are times when matchups don’t favor him and he sits. Marcus is more versatile to be sure, but did he fill his role perfectly? In game 6 vs. Bucks when he was a team worst -14 and shot 2-9 .... was that really great? His 2-7s in the 2 wins vs Bucks weren’t special either. In those 2 wins we won by a smaller margin than the 2 wins without him.

I hate to be put in a position to knock a role player I really like. No matter what anybody says about him, 29% shooting in playoffs is not worth 15 million. I’m sorry. It just isn’t. Being tough, flopping at an elite level to create turnovers, getting under skin of opponents, jaw dropping steals once every other game...... I love it! But you can get that with a second round pick for a couple of years for a lot cheaper.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Haha. Yeah. Bottom line is Ainge will get Smart for the number he sees as market value. If not he’s gone, but I just don’t see it. I like your percentages. Seems realistic.

I look at your roster & I wonder how true that is for this year. If you're able to retain Irving next season, than you're staring at years of being a tax payer. My assumption (it could be wrong) is that you'd want to avoid the tax this year in order to delay starting the clock on the repeater tax. I don't have insight on your ownership's willingness to spend big, but any year you can avoid the tax & postpone repeater taxes is huge for most owners. What are your thoughts?

I agree but what this might not be taking into consideration is the Celts offer will now be signicantly lower on #1 option than it was and he might not take it making me think #3 is more likely.

Ownership are venture capital and private equity guys. If they need to bring more capital into the team, they will.

That said -- of course you're right that Ainge will try to avoid the luxury tax for as long as he can.
