Right now, the Kings are looking to get assets for their cap space for just this year, but teams seem to be willing to wait for the Kings to lower their price or to just pay the luxury tax. I think that some teams might be willing to trade future salary now to jump into the Leonard/Durant/everybody else sweepstakes next offseason.
Take a team like Miami. They are looking at the cap being $108m. Right now they have $117m committed in 2019. They need either $32m (7-10 years played in NBA) or $38m (10+ years) to offer a max contract. Then they have very few salaries committed after that. If they can dump $47m in 2019 salary, they can look at stars. And history shows us Miami likes stars.
What if there was a trade around Kings expiring contracts for Whiteside and Josh Richardson? Maybe add in a WCS for Winslow swap in there. Richardson would be perfect for this team. The Heat dump $37m of 2019 salary and could easily find another $10m elsewhere to get to a max offer.
I am not saying the Kings (Whiteside contract) or the Heat (why make this trade now instead of next offseason) should do that trade. But I do think the Kings should consider taking on 2019 salary now, if it could net them a good player like Richardson.
What do you all think of taking on 2019 salary in a trade like this?
Edit
Other players that currently have two years left at big money are Reggie Jackson, Ian Mahimi, Mason Plumlee, Chandler Parsons, Bismack Biyombo, and Evan Turner. Not saying there teams want to get rid of them, but those are the types of players I would trade for, if I could get a good piece back. Also Deng and Mozgov.
Proposed awhile back taking bad salary on multi year deals.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1724939Mahimi in order to get Oubre but it would likely cost WCS.
Deng for an unprotected 2019, protected 2021 but send an expiring vet out
Call up Denver and get Faried for a protected first.
Parsons is very expensive, they'd have to take ZBO and really offer something good.
