AD.

The whole leverage point was his contract expiring in two years. They may have felt compelled to trade him if next summer if they thought he was leaving in 2020. Unless he is willing to walk from a supermax that they would love to give him and which he is now eligible for, Pels have control of him for the next seven years.

He may spring loose, but it is highly unlikely.

Kawhi is currently walking away from the supermax. It's not unlikely enough to definitively say "not happening."

Yeah, it is.

I’ve been saying it for awhile now.. If the Pels suck this year, they will look to move him before he can opt out. Not saying he’ll be a Celtic at all.. Just saying he’ll be available. He’s been talking about his frustration trying to win for awhile now.

I don’t see him being so frustrated next summer that he turns down a supermax.

A lot of star players have left money on the table over the last few years. Granted not the supermax except what looks like Kawhi but still. Guys have been jumping ship for a better chance to win or forcing themselves out of their situation in a trade

Are we totally sure Kawhi was offered the supermax this summer?

Smart, in my opinion is a great guy to have on a value contract, but not someone worth overpaying. 3/$34mil-4/$46mil would be a fair contract in my opinion.

Celtics would match all of those, IMO.

Were 8-9M under the tax and one Yabusele dump away at that point— the deal doesnt feel painful enough for us to not match.

Don't go Crazy but I dont think they'd match either. Not Smart.

Yes we would. I think folks are sometimes forgetting to take into account just how mid-range-contract-sparse our payroll is. We'd love to get [Smart at 8-9mil / year] I'm sure, but [Smart at 11-12mil / year] is better than [not Smart], both because he contributes at least in the vicinity of that pay grade, and because it gives us a very useful salary for matching for the next couple of years.

I always say, "make decisions down the roster, not up". I don't want to have to give Yabusele away for nothing while there's still the slightest possibility of finding a way to not take a zero on that asset, but, I'd rather take a zero on Yabs than on Smart.

Respectually disagree. As much for him chucking 14 bad shots a game and forcing bad passes as for the salary. I'm going to leave it at this (nothing against or your stance but I'm sure the board doesn't want me to keep repeating myself).

No, but if AD pulls a Kawhi and publically demands out like Kawhi did, are we totally sure the pelicans offer the supermax?

People who are focused solely on his shooting and turnovers will miss out on the other positive things he does (apart from his elite defense and intangibles). Brad Stevens knows what he's talking about when he sings praises about this guy.

These are some of the tangibles. I'm sure we'll still find a way to dismiss this.

Interesting bit of trivia from Andy Bailey Twitter: The only players who totaled as many threes, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks as Marcus Smart through their first four NBA seasons: Baron Davis, Steve Francis, Hersey Hawkins, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Victor Oladipo, Latrell Sprewell and Kemba Walker.

Are you assuming Smart will be similarly injured every season?

How does him being injured in FEB impact him in the playoffs?

Who is he going to move past on that list of 7 players in front of him?
Irving
Hayward
Horford
Tatum
Brown
Rozier
Baynes
He isn't unless he gets better offensively. Then you factor in Theis who was better than him in the regular season in the end Marcus Smart is you 9th best player and I don't know how that changes.

couple things

1. idk how yer defining 'impact' but i say a good way to 'impact' a game is to be on the floor. Smart was in the top 5 for MPG in playoffs. And it was around the same MPG he was getting in regular season when Kyrie was playing anyway.
2. Baynes is not 'better' or 'more impactful' than Smart. I mean, just look at the $s in the contract. Look at the MPG. Look at how the game is changing - you can't play a big without a 3 in the NBA Finals for more than 20 mpg. I'm not even gonna respond to the Marcus Morris stuff cos that's not a real thing.

I am sorry when it comes to Baynes your wrong. You can't have a player like Smart who completely hang his reputation on his defense that isn't even that measurably different than his peers and then tell me Baynes doesn't have an impact but your right about the contract dollars and that is pretty relevant to the conversation. You say Smart is most valuable than Baynes and I say Baynes it is at least debatable and we know Baynes makes for money.

I have no problem saying Marcus Smart was the 5 th best player for this team in the playoffs. But Irving and Hayward make him 7 and then we have Theis even if I give you Baynes.

I didn't mention Morris either he is not relevant to this conversation.

But i thought he just dribbles the air out of the ball until 5 seconds are left on the shot clock? Pretty amazing what the team is able to do in 5 seconds when he is in i guess.

WTF is it with Smart's detractors and hyperbole? He took 9.5 total shots a game, and not all of them were bad. Are you just making **** up because you don't feel like looking it up or are you just trying to weight your argument? I don't get it.
