Give that man the max with specifics like the Joel deal. Be smart about this. Everyone is happy.

KP would have to agree to that.

Everybody wants guaranteed money. If all signs are the rehab went amazing he comes back at the End of the year and looks amazing then fine. Can’t be on some no we want the max right now to see how much you trust. No that’s not smart if the Knicks and would be a disaster signing him right now just because he wants the most way guaranteed ASAP.

I highly doubt that

then make yourself familiar with janis.

You’re not familiar with da gawd Janis if you think he doesn’t want all his money.

...he’ll force a trade later.

You can. He’ll have a sizable cap hold but not as big as his Max.

But does it get bigger than if he doesn't sign an extension? Because we already barely have enough cap room, so taking more away would hurt.

It only goes up if he signs for an actual amount. Then that’s the new cap hit. Otherwise it’s the cap hold until he’s signed or the team waived his rights.

So an extension fuqs our cap.
Good luck telling Janis to wait.

His cap hold alone makes it very tough for a max slot... Has been discussed in depth on here and ESPN and the like “experts”.

Oh, I thought we were super close to one max slot, and we'd have to shed Lee and stretch Noah for almost a 2nd? Guess I haven't been following enough.

Our cap is boo boo

Do you not understand how the Salary Cap works my man? :D

Porzingis' extension wouldn't kick in until AFTER 2019. It has NO bearing AT ALL money wise on the 2019 Free Agency for the Knicks.

--Mags

It sure does matter, if he signs a Mac extension btwn now and end of 2018 season, it hits the books...

It boggles my mind how some of you claim to know so much about basketball and criticize so much on this board, but in actuality know diddly squat. :nonono:

ANY extension Porzingis signs, does NOT kick in until his Rookie deal ENDS, which would be at the END of the 2019-20 Season!

His new contract would activate for the 2020 Summer, NOT the end of 2018 Season.

--Mags

How?
This is KP’s 4th year. He’s a Free Agent next summer. That’s the end of the 2018-19 season. That’s when his contract extension would hit.

Idk if I trust this site specifically but it says Wiggins max kicks in next year.

You mean this year...

I mean 18-19. Define it how you’d like.

That’s on their cap now.
Wiggins would be a free agent but he already has his contract.

So his extension kicked in this summer

Right. He was extended last fall, and thus his new contract is on the books this summer. Same would happen with KP if we extended him now.

Don’t rookie deals last for 5 years? I thought they can take the QO (if offered) in the summer of their 4th season if their team doesn’t make them an offer and they get no offers as an RFA.

IE Noel was drafted in 2013

13-14
14-15
15-16 - summer of 2016 - could have been offered an extension
16-17 - summer of 2017 - RFA, got no money, took the QO
17-18 - summer of 2018 - FA

This is the last year of cheap KP. We gotta sign him to an extension by the end of the season. Just give him the max, but with injury protection clauses. That way if he gets hurt, we're not hamstrung by the contract, and he still gets his money if he stays healthy.

I don't understand the rush. Why can't he just be locked up after free agency 2019?

Another thing to consider.

The advantage of locking up KP now is that he has to sign for at least another 4 years plus the current year. This will lock him up until at least 2023.

If we wait until next offseason, KP can sign a contract with an option to opt out in ‘22. He could either then leave or resign for more money.

Waiting sounds like in both parties best interests, no? Knicks get to possibly sign a FA then go over etc with KP's deal AFTER, KP gets a deal of - is it 3 years? Or two? Nonetheless, two lucrative years at a lot of money, then the flexibility to sign up again, have leverage against the team to ensure they are making moves he wants etc, and of course the option to just leave.

Yeah, it sounds like that's what will happen as the Knicks want the extra cap space in '19 and it allows KP some flexibility with his new contract.

If he resigns next summer, I think he can sign for anywhere for up to 5 years. In 2022 is when KP could be eligible for the designated veteran extension or sign for 30% of the cap. So most likely he may want a 3 year deal with a player option on the 4th year so he can re-up in '22. Lebron had set the blueprint for that kind of deal.

Dolan will give kp any contract he wants and dolan likes kp and he won't low ball him. Dolan opens his checkbook 90 percent of the time if he talent he likes he will over pay.

The way Salary cap space is determined is by seeing how much salary is committed the FOLLOWING season and in the case of 2019, it would be 27 million instead of 16 million (his caphold). This would mean we would have $11 million less to offer to a free agent next summer if we extend him now. This is why teams wait to extend his restricted guys until AFTER they've used up all their cap and then go over the cap and sign their own guys. It's a way to circumvent the cap.
