2 years $20 is a bargain. He is a $13 mil a year player,but timing isn’t right.
If he has a hands to bank $20 million, and still have prime earning years, I think he would be dumb not to do it.
Wonder if that’s an option.

Marcus doesn’t owe us anything. We dont owe him anything.
Ainge will prob offer a 2-year $20 deal, Marcus will want exum money.
I think he is invaluable, so I would overspend on a unique player like him.
Not sure what Ainge wants. The QO is in no one’s interests.

If everything works out, the Celtics have to decide if Rozier or Smart is the 10 minute a game backup point guard.
Don't offer Smart, who no other teams want, anything than the QO. Rozier and Smart then show during the season who deserves the job and the extension.
A few weeks after Smart's free agency began, Ruth was traded to the Yankees.

No but they are clamoring for guys like Jabari Parker and Dante Exum and Zach Lavine and there isn't so much cap space to go around. If he can improve his game a little and be part of a really good if not two-time champion C's team, he'll find a taker.
(which is part of the reason I like the concept of a two year deal, let him try and earn a big contract while trying to help us win a championship in the process)
I agree with your 2 year deal idea, but in fairness each of the 3 guys you mentioned are restricted free agents this year and got those offers. So maybe Smart’s restricted status hurts him, but those guys would prove the opposite.

Froob wrote:Is it unpopular to say Rozier is a better point? I thinks Smart’s playmaking is a bit overrated he seems to have more stupid turnovers.
I think both are better as a secondary creator, Smart at either the 2 or the 3 with a tradiontal point guard and Rozier at the 1 with a point forward (because Rozier can’t guard bigger guys).
I kinda see them as different positions and it’s not because Smart has a few inches on him. Smart is much much stronger than Rozier.
Agreed.
Rozier and Smart, are perfect as a (1/2) Combo Guard, and a (2/1/3) Combo/Point-Forward, respectively.
The two are best, when on the floor together.

Re: Marcus Smart free agency Take 2. "He works hard for the money"
Tell me, if we have relatively good health, where does Smart get big minutes to show he deserves more than 14m or even near it? Sure, teams will have more money (more FA too) but they will likely have to go on what Smart already did (he will be 25 or 26 IIRC), because I believe he has missed the window to show he is more.
I think people are banking on how critical Smart was to a depleted team last season and to a team that needed him when all we had was AB and IT4 starting and only him and Roze on the bench in those positions as the backups (JB was a rookie and nowhere close to what he was last season). Again, if we are healthy next season and the young guys continue on their paths, where does that leave Smart? If Hayward is healthy, you have to let him get time running the offense when Kyrie sits, he's too good at it for us to not use him that way. That just takes away needing Smart to run the offense when Kyrie (IT4) isn't out there like seasons past and he definitely can't play off the ball (unless I'm missing it). Now that everyone is growing and getting stronger, we won't need him to sub in and cover anyone's man like he HAD to do because of IT4. Everyone on our team can defend pretty well, including Kyrie when he feels like it.
Smart was lucky to be on the previous teams but these new guys and the yougins can give most of what he does. CBS didn't have anyone who could play when Smart was playing poorly in the past, but now, we have a whole slew of passers and defenders with two young studs in the making who you can sub in for him and keep it rolling.
I absolutely still believe he will get his "winning plays" moments again this season but teams aren't paying out the butt for that when half the teams wont make the playoffs, half of the teams that do make it can't pay or aren't a $14m Smart away from doing anything when they do make it in.
What teams do you know wants a no shooting/scorer as their starting 1/2? This doesn't have anything to do with whether Smart is a good player or not but the NBA has gone to the PG and SG having to be good shooters and/or scorers and he is neither. What team, competing for the playoffs and championship these days don't have good shooters and/or scorers at the 1/2? I can't think of any. I'd hope we aren't paying Smart that much on this team to be a backup that may not be as important anymore but I'll always go with what DA decides is best.
I think Smart is about to be heartbroken next season if he waits to get paid then. IMO, he wants starter money for bench talent and he isn't that young anymore. Some team may pay him but it wont be a good team and when and if they do become good, I don't see it with Smart being the starter.
I want Smart back but we have a lot of mouths to be fed soon, we aren't paying a bench player what Smart wants. We may pay him this season but we will be shipping that out next season when everyone else is needing money.
Who still thinks Smart is so good he should be a full time starter? IMO we may need Smart (previous teams for sure), but I think he needs us just as much if not more.

Re: Marcus Smart free agency Take 2. "He works hard for the money"
Danny, right before training camp when Smart comes back to him, ready to deal...

I'm kidding! I think 2/24 (2nd yr TO) or 4/40 (4th yr PO) has always been on the table since July 1. Second option may have incentive clauses attached to increase his earnings. Ainge is just letting him test the market, knowing full well it's unlikely Smart gets a better deal elsewhere. If he still wants to gamble on himself to become a UFA, he'll play the QO (bad idea for both sides imo). I won't rule out an S&T. I just have zero idea what that deal looks like (which team, for what player/s).

If he takes that next year is gone, he better be going this year then, I don’t want him trying to earn cash at our expenses all year long. Don’t worry just noticed the 13rd of July was the deadline to rescind QOs

I think there still is an outside chance of a S&T.

Don't kid yourself: There was money out there and now most of it is gone. Look at what Exum, LaVine and Paker are getting. Clearly teams don't have much interest in a defensive specialist that is a historically bad offensive player.
Smart will end up taking the QO.

I think what Ainge is doing is waiting; showing smart how much he is actually worth in the market. Smart is pissed that he didn’t get any more offers which I understand because he had many injuries under his name in the past. But now we all wait for Kings next move; if they don’t offer Anything to smart. Smart will sign whatever contract he is being offered my C’s. Which I have a feeling Ainge might use him as a trade package lol so anything can happen but I like what Ainge is doing

Re: Marcus Smart free agency Take 2. "He works hard for the money"
Spoiler:
Agreed on this. If the team is healthy he is looking at 20 to 24 min per game. Down quite a bit from where he has been. I do think if he shows improvement in shooting% and can Stay above 40 % fg and 30% 3pt teams will show a fair bit of interest in him as a FA. But nobody is going to come in with an offer in excess of 15 million per year even then IMO. He has 4 years of data that teams can look at at 24 yo he might improve some but this is likely who he is. I love him but he is a gritty defensive 6th man... not a starter

Said that is not possible right now it would have pro and cons, pros would be that you can work on finalizing the roster without anything pending, you won’t be taking back a disgruntled Smart that will use all his opportunities to show he is good on offense, you won’t have someone potentially pulling something stupid and injury himself, you won’t have to think about his contract next year when you have to focus on Kyrie’s and TRoz contracts. Cons would be you lose a defensive stopper that makes you plays in the clutch.
