You in shambles?

If "signing a star" means signing a star of DD's caliber I wish we never ever sign a "star".

You'll get that wish, don't worry.

We finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 3rd*, and 1st and in the playoffs lost in the first round, swept in the first round, made the ECF (Yay), swept in the second round, swept in the second.

Essentially we met expectations once and failed to meet them four times in five seasons.
We completely collapsed in upon ourselves when it mattered, and even in the ECF season we were taken to game seven in the preceding rounds by lesser teams.

Yeah, it sucks that he was traded from a personal standpoint. He seemed like a great guy who was a great ambassador for the city.
However, he wasn't running for mayor his job here was to be the best player on the floor and lead us in the playoffs and after five seasons it just didn't happen.

How many teams have stuck to their core group this long after these sort of results?

I've never believed in the "loyalty" argument (both ways). I wanted to trade Carter the same year he wanted to leave because we were capped out and had little room to improve. Completely fine with Carter wanting out looking at the same situation as I was.

DeRozan got the better end of the bargain in Toronto. Was carried his entire career by Lowry to great team records and playoff appearances. Had the offense completely catered to his skillset. Got the max money he wanted but didn't deserve.

Based on what he gave us in return, he's lucky he wasn't traded years ago.

Don't fall for the American Media propaganda

Post#23 » by Matty » Wed Jul 18, 2018 3:25 pm

They're working overtime to make the organization look bad on this deal. The last thing we need is our own fans falling for their silly narratives. We all know this core wasn't going anywhere and DeRozan was the main culprit for our lack of success in the playoffs. To get him out and bring in a proven superstar as well as a legit 3 & d player is an amazing haul.

This was probably our only chance for a real run before the eventual rebuild in 2020, and Masai has made sure to make the most of it before then. Good on him I hope we extend him for another 5 years.

Why do people think nobody is ever going sign with the Raptors again?

Did people not sign with the Celtics after they traded away IT4?

People put too much importance on "Loyalty" and crap like that. I really do liek DeRozan, but he was given his chance after chance, and it was time to move on. We paid him his money, and we sent him to one of the best organizations and one of the best coaches ever.

Loyal or not, I'd rather our team try and shoot for a championship than "stay loyal", and never have anything out of it. Lets not forget, that DeRozan ASKED to be moved, if we tanked after trading Gay. So, lets not pretend that he's loyal too.

Would Duncan have stayed in SAS had they not continued winning? Who knows, he was going to sign with ORL at the time.

Loyalty exists only as far as it benefits both parties. That's how human nature is.

I agree with this sentiment. This franchise showed more patience with DD than any other franchise would. With Toronto he entered the starting lineup pretty much right after being drafted, and was given big responsibility on the offensive end despite never being able to shoot and not giving enough effort defensively. Not to mention the huge salary awards.

Then we have the gall to trade him to perhaps the best franchise in the NBA.

This franchise treated DD incredibly well, and DD responded by showing incredible loyalty. Great. Nothing lasts forever, and it's time to move on.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

American media was feigning concern after the Casey firing too. They want the Raptors to be also-rans every year so they don't have to cover them, not a team that goes for it

They are really propping up Demar. Demar was a great player for us, a franchise legend to be sure, but taking into account his style of play, you could make the argument that we were better off without him... while he was ON the team. We saw that play out quite a bit over the years.

Seriously - anyone other than the folks who appear on either Zach Lowe's podcast or Locked On NBA are just generating hot air to fill ESPN's empty airtime.

Literally 2 months ago the Raptors were a team that couldn't get it done in the Playoffs. That was the narrative. Now, all of a sudden, we needed to keep our core together because "DeRozan wanted to be there"?

Shut it. I've been a raps fan since the beginning and I've seen countless stars leave. DeRozan was our only loyal star. He was a stand up guy, loved by teammates and players around the league and underappreciated.

I know that kawhi is a top 5 player in the association (when healthy which is a big if) while DeRozan at best is top 15 who who's not a true number 1 option on a championship team (there's really less than 10 of those guys in the league).

I also know that kawhi is bringing a lot of baggage with him. If an A+ organization like the spurs had to deal with his crap, I can only imagine what it's going to be like for us next year. Add in he fact that he's coming off a serious injury, we have no idea how he'll perform I'm 18-19, he's essentially a rental and we gave up someone I had high hopes for and I'm not as excited as some of you are about this deal.

Can we be clear about something?

He isn't taking a shot at Raptors fans. He isnt even really taking a shot at the organization. If someone told him he wasn't going to be traded, that is some serious BS and I would be angry as well.

More broadly, he is taking a shot at ALL basketball fans for complaining about players teaming up, but are fine with management trading players against their express wishes.

So I guess I kind of agree with him. Or at least I can say I understand the sentiment.

He couldn't muster up the loyalty to play D. This team FORCE fed him into becoming an all-star. We groomed him, we allowed him to maximize his potential.

He owes us a thank you.

It really amazes me how Americans come together most when its trashing Canada in the sports landscape. Its consistent every time.

DeRozan was gone after 2 years anyways. It would make no sense for him to resign again after failing to have success with the team.
It was inevitable he was leaving and we were going to get NOTHING from him. We were never going to get another chance to trade for a superstar. If you're still upset after all of this then maybe you were never a Raptors fan to begin with. You should know free agency was never our strong suit anyways so not sure why you thought we ever had a chance of signing anyone.

it is a bad trade though. Kawhi doesn't want to be here and will be gone in one year. We virtually gave up Demar, Yak, and a 2019 pick for a 1 year rental who is disgruntled diva and Danny Green

The only American media that I respect and listen to are Zach Lowe, Woj, Bobby Marks, Shams, Chris Mannix, Windhorst, and a few more. Bobby Marks already outright said that if he were the GM he'd do the exact same thing. He likes it for the Raptors.
