It's an over pay but most of us
figured the max for him was probably around 12.

good deal for both sides. People freaked when Bradley got 8 million per and it ended up being a great deal for Boston. Now they can go out and get Jimmy Butler later this summer! jk lol hehe haha

Still nervous about him re-signing
The pairing of Irving/Smart for the future (if they feel Irving re-signs) makes sense. They are good together; best of both worlds on the court, elite play making on both sides of the ball.

Plus I like our chances against Golden State better with Smart on the team than without.

Yea I think it might be good for both parties. Would've honestly prefered keeping Terry tho, I find him to have more potential despite the lack of versatility on D. Hope Danny can unload M. Morris for a 2025 2nd rounder, so the younger guys can play more- it'd be another win-win situation.
Good assessment:

I love Smart at this price.
1) smart is a game changer defensively and gamechangers are what is needed on championship teams.
2) a 12 mill a year deal is very tradeable and is needed as salary balast on the team. Now smart, brown, a little filler can match Davis' contract.

Marcus offense, bench offense, will be fine.sully00 wrote:The Comedian wrote:sully00 wrote:
That is not true at all Marcus Smart has a terrible ORTG because he is bad offensive player, @ 97 he is tied with Ojeleye for the worst among rotation players. For his career he is a slightly better 100. Rozier was a 109 lat season both Smart and Rozier had a 104 Defensive Rating which is very good compared to the rest of the team especially the guards.
The Celtics offensive rating when Smart was in this year was 108.4, was 107.9 when he was off. When terry was in their rating was 106.7, and when he was off it was 109.7.
That doesn't change the fact that Marcus Smart's offensive rating was 97 lets get real folks. Nobody is denying Marcus Smart has an impact but stop trying gaslight us with Marcus Smart and his awful shooting somehow is good for the offense.
I will buy that getting stops and turnovers makes it easier for guys like Tatum and Irving and Rozier to be even better offensive players but accept that this is what his happening and not this idea that Marcus Smart shooting 36% on 20% usage is really good offense that the rest of us are too stupid to appreciate.
Looking at terry/smart/morris/theis/baynes if it is a straight 5/5 swap.
But the starters will be staggered so he is getting minutes with horf/tatum/brown/hayward. He knows he only needs to stick a shot here and there and defend.

I don't like it at all unless we know we can't re-sign Terry, Who next year was gonna pay him more then the midleval, 4 years 36 million should have done it. Maybe the reports are a bit off on the numbers I have seen some sources say lower IE 46 allows them to potentially not go over the luxary tax this year if it includes 20% increases, we are gonna hate this contract in 2 or 3 years though.

Lot's of parameters being set in this contract that Smart will have to abide to to get his full pay.
Also we need trade chips for AD.

I'm wondering if there is any incentives that nflates what this deal looks like but doesn't count against cap

If Boogie comes back healthy, Smart is the only PG in the NBA who can handle their 1-5 PnR with a switch. That has to mean something.

It's little bit to much 40 would be optimal but ok.
I think Nader and Yabu are gone to stay under tax imo.
10
10.8
11.6
12.6
8.5 was limit to stay under tax with Nader...but even if he is gone I expect Bird to take his spot.
Yabu salary is 2.6 do I expect Yabu will be traded for us to stay under.

This is a good deal. We can move him in the future at this price point. We havent boxed our selves into a bad contract.

My head says that Smart is good for the team's overall performance. The on/off numbers have shown that for years.
But my heart winces at those wild shots and turnovers and flopping and his bragging about his value for the next four years.

4/36
9 mill per year flat. 9x4.
That is the optimal contract.

Re: Marcus Smart free agency Take 2. "He works hard for the money"
Having a contract that is 10 mil plus has some value in future trades, but I don't think its worth paying the tax this year if we can avoid it, Marcus Smart is better on our team then he would be on any team outside of Golden State, the rest of the league knows this, no huge offer was ever going to come for him. I really don't see PT this year for both him and Terry. He is a fine backup point guard, one of the 20 best bench defenders in the league. Over 10 mil a year is not backup money to me. Hopefully this is being floated by happy to drive up the price.
