Detroit Pistons, Arnie Kander reunite to address injury prevention

Post#1 » by bballnmike » Tue Jul 17, 2018 8:33 pm

Good news, as I know lots of people around here were fans of Arnie and our season obviously depends on keeping Reggie and Blake healthy.

Multiple sources tell the Free Press that former Pistons strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander is consulting with the organization – and the relationship could turn into a permanent position in the revamped organization.

Stefanski reached out to Kander shortly after being hired as senior adviser in May. After a couple of conversations, Kander met with medical and training staffs on a fact-finding mission. Kander, a former ballet dancer, is known for training regimens with an emphasis on stretching. Before practices with the Pistons, Kander would lead elaborate stretching and warm-up sessions before drill work would commence.

Another area of focus could be length of practices.

stretching/yoga is primarily what tom brady's trainer puts him through. it focuses strengthening the muscles to the outer edge of their range of motion so that those muscles will stay activated and not get overloaded when put under odd forces.

i had chronic muscular issues and while i don't stretch or do yoga i modified my lifting to focus on the outer ranges (with less weight) and it's made a huge difference. my explosiveness isn't quite there but i don't really care since i can play basketball as often as i want :D

not much else to say but hopefully the guys stay healthy.

Excellent move. Arnie was a magician at giving injury-prone guys a second life; Antonio McDyess being his finest work.

He's always struck me as a bit of a new-age-y weirdo. I'd rather have the woman who just left the Warriors.

Good, he never should have left in the first place.

Best signing this organization has made this summer.

I like this a lot. If he can keep Reggie and griffin on the court, we might be ok

Nice. Arnie should've never left, I'm really happy to see he will probably be back. Best thing we could've possibly done this offseason, especially with Reggie, Bullock, Griffin and even SJ having injury issues.

Can't deny the man's history of keeping players on the court... that alone can bump the seed a couple spots.

SVG thought so too... Then he conveniently blamed all his failures on freak injuries that he had every year.

Glad SVG is gone and Arnie is back.

I did get that impression a little bit, but if it's just his emphasis on stretching and things like that, he may have been a little ahead of his time if anything.

Now if he were telling people to just take some pseudo supplement BS instead of listening to real doctors, I'd be concerned.

I have no doubt that more players will be available for more games with Kander managing their care. So much of his unique work is preventive that injuries should be down going forward. Kander's presence will make the Pistons more attractive to veterans wanting to extend their careers as well. Stefanski seems to be making a number of important moves to build a better Pistons team for the short term and in this case, for the long haul. As "honeymoons" go with the cap strapped Pistons, this one is better than expected.

I saw him milling around after the Casey presser and figured he was back in the fold. Glad to have him back in some capacity.

Kander has always been a bit out there, but it's hard to argue with the results. He's got a great track record of helping guys rehab and prevent re-injury. He was really ahead of the curve in terms of his holisitic approach to health. It was never about "how do we fix this guys ankle", it was "how do we get this guys whole body and mind right?"

Bingo.

Arnie’s track record is undeniable. The guy obviously knows what he’s doing and any long time Pistons fan would say the same. During Arnie’s tenure with the Pistons injuries were one thing the fans never worried about relative to unexpectedly long recovery times.
