Yes, great deal if it happens.

4/44 will be great.

4/50 will be good.

Either way, we now (assuming this goes down) have both: 1.) the salary pieces needed to aggregate for a max or near-max player, without sending out one of our own maxes or both of Brown and Tatum and savaging our depth, and 2.) relatively easy paths to dodging the tax.

In other words, we're in a good position to be both buyers and sellers at the deadline, depending on how things go over the first half of the season.

Things could not have gone much better. (He says before the negotiations fall apart and house Smart declares a blood feud on house Ainge.)

I think it will be something like reload alluded to regarding incentives, 4/50 if he hits his them, or 4/46 without.

I don't really buy the "keep the player happy" argument by bidding against yourselves, doesn't seem like an Ainge move at all. My main concern is what happens if Irving walks next summer? Not sure if my match is exactly correct but without their cap holds and twelve a year to Smart their at around 104 next summer with their current roster. You have a wing heavy draft next summer and potentially two lottery picks/four firsts.

Bear in mind that we're not just bidding against the market this year. There's projected to be a ton more cap space next year, so there's a real argument for Smart to take the QO and "bet on himself", then try to cash in in a much better market.

To move him off the QO, we have to offer him enough to get him to favor the security over the upside. For example: him taking the QO this year, hitting unrestricted free agency, then getting a 3-year deal at the MLE, comes out to a little over 4/35. It would not be unreasonable of Marcus to think of the MLE as just about his absolute floor - he certainly would have gotten it this offseason, if we hadn't had matching rights.

So, something like 4/40 would not have done it. For a difference of less than 5mil between our offer, and what he probably considers to be his floor, he might as well bet on himself. For 15mil more, on the other hand, the security of the sure thing becomes more tempting.

Hopefully the final number will come down somewhere in the middle. But, the point is, there's rhyme and reason to the numbers being discussed.

Only if you shot a lot less frequently than Smart does. :)

That actually is really interesting, Zarren is the goat number cruncher.

There are 10 backup guard minutes for Smart and Rozier to share.

Paying Smart $50million will be a disaster.

What a waste of money, when minimum contract players are much better on offense than he is.

If it's declining, than imo it looks Morris than later in season will be traded for us to stay under tax. Than Yabu is a keeper.

There's a lot more than 820 minutes available to them. You can't just treat it like there are 48*5 mpg to allot to your entire roster, when pretty much no one on the team will actually play 82.

If Smart and Terry combine for less than 3,000 minutes this season, it will not be because of a roster squeeze, it will be because of injuries, trades, or some crazy unexpected shift of the depth chart like Terry forgetting how to play and Wanamaker being an absolute dervish.

Additionally, each guy is on some level insurance against the other guy leaving or getting traded.

The declining terms is genius! I'm down with it.

I like it. Didn't think Marcus was going to sign a long term deal. It's good to retain the asset. He's not going to make or break your season but he will help you win. 30 mpg for 12 mil is good value. The salary is great for a trade for Davis (hopefully). Great insurance for next offseason when Kyrie and Rozier FAs. Still a small chance he gets his game together on the offense end and the contract is a huge bargin.

Weird. This blows up a lot of my assumptions. Really didn't think they would want to go for the trading-a-solid-vet-when-we're-supposed-to-be-contending look. Either they're higher on Semi and/or Yabs than I am, or there's some other wrong assumption I've made that I can't see yet.

 Smart won’t sniff anywhere near 30 minutes with Hayward back

Depends on if you consider 25 mpg sniffing 30, i expect him in that 24-26 range with Rozier.

Hopefully more money up front earns us team option years or partially guaranteed money. That would be great in this particular case. Love me some Smart, but he's volatile...build in as many escape clauses as possible hahaha
