This guy's a really smart kid. Pop has a lot to work with here.
The good thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.
The bad thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.

Re: Welcome to the Spurs, Jakob Poeltl!
He's a Euro scrub. High energy but still a scrub. Low ceiling due to his non-existent offense and weak rebounding. Foul-prone. He's quick and can defend a bit but not quite good enough to anchor a team's defense. He's filler - thrown in so Pop and Buford can sucker the SA fans into thinking they got a young prospect. Toronto wont miss him and he wont really be useful to the Spurs anytime soon based on how out of sorts he looked in the playoffs. Spurs woulda been better off bringing over Milutinov, he's got legit wingspan for a defensive anchor(unlike Poeltl) and looks to have better rebounding instincts. Only positive about Jakob is he won't mail it in every night like Pau.

Re: Welcome to the Spurs, Jakob Poeltl!
Out of anyone I actually feel like Jak may be the big winner from this trade. If he is infused with the Spurs' system / influence as one might project, he could materially improve his career trajectory from solid defensive backup to low touch, high IQ cornerstone. I wish him well - I really liked this kid, and thin SA will love him.

My personal Jakob Poeltl scouting report:
Pros:
-Extremely mobile for a 7 foot center. Unlike a lot of 7 foot centers, he can switch on the perimeter and stay in front of guys with his outstanding footspeed and lateral quickness and still contest jumpshots thanks to his length. The other team going small isn't going to force your team to take him off the floor.
-Pick and roll coverage. With his quickness and length, he is a very good pick and roll defender, and has the BBIQ to know how to cover it. With the incredible emphasis on the P&R in the new NBA, he's definitely an asset.
-Rim protection ability. Poeltl has good instincts on the defensive end, he can see cuts and will rotate to contest before they get to the rim, he knows when to leave his man to come over and help, and he has good explosiveness and timing to actually block shots around the rim.
-Soft hands. Poeltl has extremely soft hands for a big. He is a great finisher inside, and he is good at cutting to the basket at making himself big to catch passes. He isn't really a lob finisher, he's more of a layup finisher, but the shots go in. There is hardly any wasted motion, and he doesn't bring the ball down, he just goes right up with it to the rim and it goes in at a good rate.
-High BBIQ. Poeltl knows how to play basketball and from interviews you can tell he thinks the game well. He isn't going to make any bone headed errors. He plays like a vet and I could see him getting a lot of time under Popovich.
-Defensive anchor potential. Kevin Durant mentioned his impact on the game, LeBron also gave him credit for his interior defense. He has the potential to become the defensive anchor for a good team.
Cons:
-Weak rebounder. Poeltl isn't the toughest guy and he can often get outworked on the boards by smaller and more tenacious rebounders. His per-36 totals aren't bad, but they are deceiving. He gets easier rebounds and often loses 50/50 battles to more aggressive rebounders.
-Dissapearing act. In Utah he was one of the most acclaimed big men in the NCAA, but he wilted in March Madness. He was almost invisible this past post season in Toronto after a very, very positive regular season. Will this trend continue?
-Offensively limited. Although Poeltl is a very capable finisher inside, he lacks a real offensive game. Although he can't be ignored completely due to his cutting and finishing ability, he is not going to be a guy who you can rely on to produce baskets. His high BBIQ and soft hands indicate that he still has potential to develop a serviceable offensive game, however.
-Weak against bigger guys. Poeltl has a difficult time against the Cousins and Drummonds of the NBA. His lower body strength isn't great and he can get pushed under the basket by NBA bruisers. Thankfully those types of players aren't as common anymore, but it will come up when you face a team with that type of player on it.
-FT%. Jakob does not seem like the guy who would be a bad free throw shooter, but he isn't very good. He improved between his rookie season and his sophomore season, but he is still under 60%. I think this will improve a bit, but I doubt he will ever shoot over 75% from the line.
-Mental toughness. Does Jakob lack the will to dominate? He has a reserved attitude on the court and very rarely looks aggressive. Will he have the confidence to develop into the very good NBA player he could become? There are a lot of question marks about his competitive spirit, even though he does have a good attitude and appears to have a strong work ethic.

I'm sorry, i have to curb your pleasure. Jakob hasn't got any Twitter and this must be a fake Account. This Account isn't even verified and Jakob has obviously been written with a C - Jacob. I don't think the real Jakob would do that mistake.
To your information: He is only using Instagram (@Jakob) and Facebook (https://m.facebook.com/JakobPoeltl/)

Re: Welcome to the Spurs, Jakob Poeltl!
I'm translating an Interview of Jakob after the Trade was finalized. http://m.spox.com/at/sport/ussport/nba/1807/Artikel/jakob-poeltl-ueber-den-trade-zu-den-san-antonio-spurs-eine-top-adresse
He basically says, that the Spurs have a good reputation and are one of the top address in the NBA. Jakob is also convinced, that he would fit into the team very well. Although he is going to miss Toronto, he is looking forward to this new opportunity.
It is the next step/chapter in his career and he will put in a lot of effort to geht better/to grow as a player. Obviously to support and help the Spurs Team best way as possible.

Thanks for the info, AustrianHamm3r. The error is mine as I'd taken it from a local reporter's tweet, and didn't verify further. Looks like we all fell for it. Appreciate the keen eye and translation!

No Problem! For me as an Austrian and Pöltl-Fan it is obvious, that this can't be his own Account. Unfortunately some people are falling into the trap. (I remember an Interview, where he was asked, if he uses Twitter. - Answer was no)
Don't worry, you guys will hear from me more often, since Jakob got traded.
Can keep on with translating, if necessary.

Welcome! It'll be great to get some insights (and occasional translations!) from Jakob's international fans. Looking forward to it, and to seeing Jakob develop and flourish in the Spurs system. We are very happy to have him on our team!

Thanks!
(Without patriotic glasses ^^), I can fully suggest, that the Spurs got a good and promising young prospect. I know what im talking about, have watched a ton of Raptors games, since my boy Jakob got into the NBA. He still is kinda underrated, because he does things best, that don't show up in the stats.
If he can develop a jumpshot, on which he is already working and gathers more mass, he'll be a realiable and long-time starter for the Spurs organisation.

Re: Welcome to the Spurs, Jakob Poeltl!
As a Raps fan you guys will absolutely love him and I predict he will be starting beside Aldridge by mid season. A lot of us had the Raptors trading JV and starting Jakob not because we didn't want JV(we really like him As well) But because Jakob has so much potential as a defensive big.
He is always in the right spot making the right play, great passer, very underated rebounder, not sure why people are saying he isn't a good rebounder.
Extremely good help defender and shot blocker, always made an impact. Both his parents played volleyball internationally so that's we he gets his sneaky athleticism from.
Masai loved guys from the Utah program like him and Delon and I remember a story from one broadcast that stood out and I'll share the kind of intelligent player you guys are getting.
The head coach at Utah likes to do to things a little differently during training camp for team binding. He brought in an ex military guy to run drills and he was blown away with Jakob. Jakob was the captain of one of the teams the assembled for for the drills. And the one drill was the set up multiple different things to remember and left the room and came back and had to set it up. His team was the only one who did it successfully. He assigned everyone in the team one item to remember. The coach and ex military guy were blown away that a 19 year had that maturity and poise.
Can't say enough about Demar as well. Pure class, amazing work ethic, ambassador of the sport and city. You guys got great people and fantastic players.
Were excited to have a superstar and an opportunity to make a run in the East. Win win
Have a good season guys, best of luck.

Pop's gonna hate him based on how foul prone he is. Remember Mahinmi? Spurs 1st rounder that never settled into a consistent role in SA because of his dumb fouls. He also has an issue with defensive rebounding leading me to believe his positioning is extremely poor. This is a sign that he's really raw and possibly has low bball IQ(he does look kinda derpy). Bad pickup if Pop is gonna have to waste his last two years babysitting someone that should have gotten his stuff together in college or Europe.

You gotta differentiate between making dump fouls and getting bad calls. In Jakob's case it is most likely the second option.
I wouldn't say, he is a bad rebounder either. Jakob has recorded a few Double-Doubles last season (as a Bench Player!) He is still lacking a bit on mass/weight. Thats, why he sometimes gets "pushed around" in the paint by stronger bigs.
Im convinced, that he will prove you wrong and develop into an important piece for the Spurs Franchise.

Bad calls? C'mon dude, that's a weak excuse. EVERY rookie gets bad calls - it's almost a rite of passage in the NBA for the officials to be extra harsh on the newcomers. The good players learn from this and adapt quickly. Jakob's fouls per 36 mins has decreased from 6.5 to 5 in his sophmore season, which is a good sign. Sucked in the playoffs though - right back up to 6.5 pf per 36.
I never said he was a bad rebounder. His offensive rebounding is good - a result of his high energy play I assume. I specifically mentioned his defensive rebounding. For a guy his size, he shouldn't be struggling with something as automatic as defensive boards.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the guy the Spurs were really after all along.
Quick feet: can stay in front of fast guards and protect the rim..... Smart, team player.
He's going to a great organization and I'm sure he's going to thrive there.
