I guess the Celtics owners are fine with paying the luxury tax next season and for many more seasons after that. I'm sure they have the money!

Smart deal for both sides. No pun intended. It helps the Celtics with potential future trades, with depth now, and matching up with Golden State should they get that far.

Now on to Jabari Bird!

I think he is definitely gone, he won't be happy playing well under 20 mpg, and rightfully so.

Yes, because a bench player is his worth to us.

Happy to see it come to a close.

I always rated Smart less than others as I think his on court impact is about a wash and therefore should get about the MLE deal. But my only concerns were losing other players at the cost of Smart.

This. I've always thought the same thing. The guy is a great defender and a horrible player on offense, who has some kind of a weird confidence, which leads to many bad plays. Anyhow, hope he proves me wrong.
Good assessment:

Definitely an overpay but his contract will be very useful in the next big trade. Welcome back Marcus!

This FA was just bad. Next year he could’ve gotten 15+. Makes sense.
Bet with Stillwater Celtics will finish 6th or higher in ECF Standings Regular Season(17-18). [WON]

Ainge got taken to the cleaners. Would've killed for 10 or 11m per year.

Yes, because a bench player is his worth to us.

He's our proverbial 6th-Man.

He comes off the Bench.
But plays Starter minutes.

13 mill is not that bad. It is an overpay by a million. Marcus Smart value money wise is around 10-12 million. He got overpaid by one million. It is not the end of the world.

Furthermore, his contract is very tradeable now. It allows the celtics to match salaries now for a huge contract. Win, win for both sides.

From who, who is paying a PG who can't shoot 15 million? Not every team has cap sapce, he would have gotten a ton of offers at the midlevel but I doubt any much above that. Danny must think we need the salary for a trade down the road, otherwise this is a mistake, we just pushed ourselves into the tax a year early meaning we will likley lose a player in 3 or 4 years we could have kept to avoid the repeater tax. I don't like smart at 13 a year, he is fine at 6-8.

I'm not that petty so I'm not gonna tell everyone who read this whole Smart RFA situation wrong and/or who keeps undervaluing Smart to just suck it.

Nope, the same way he got no offers this summer. He's way too unreliable on offense for anyone to offer him 15 mils. I thought we had that straightened out already.

He should have gotten 10-12 million ,but the celtics paid him 13 million. A difference of one million. They have their reasons for doing that, let's wait and see what those reasons are.

Slightly more than I wanted, but Im okay with it. Hes a winning player and great for the locker room. Shot selection may improve now that he isnt pressing as hard for his next contract.

Gives us a great trade chip for a contract too.

Having said that, Davis becomes available, I'm flying to Boston to pack Marcus's bags. #loyalty
