Re: Marcus Smart free agency Take 2. "He works hard for the money"
People worry so goddamn much about minutes as if foul trouble doesn't happen, favorable match ups, overtime games, back to back games, bad games from the starters, rest..and heyyy did I mention INJURIES? You know..as Celtics fans we should all **** know that injuries happen by now..
Tired of all the whining and complaining about everything on this board. Now that this is over, can't wait to see all the idiot penny pinching cap 'geniuses' thinking of different ways of trading Morris and Rozier to save Wyc from the luxury tax..as if the professionals making millions of dollars haven't already decided which way to go if that really is a problem.

Guy wouldn’t start for the majority of teams in the league, won’t start for this team unless multiple players get injured, but we can’t call him a bench player
Half the teams in the league are trying to be bad. He'd start for OKC, New Orleans, Minnesota, Memphis, and Dallas. Teams that have money are usually the ones trying to lose.
He wouldn’t start for OKC. Roberson’s defense is arguably just as good, he has the size to be even more versatile, and though he is an offensive liability, the Thunder already have Westbrook chucking long jumpers, I don’t think they want a 2nd.
He wouldn’t start for Minnesota or Dallas either
Ability to win a 3 pt shooting contest aside, Smart is a much better offensive player than Roberson. The Celtics are better offensively with Marcus Smart on the floor than off the floor.
Dallas would go with 3 guards. Finney-Smith isn't tenable at the 3. They might be wedded to Dennis Smith Jr. but he's horrible, and at some point they're going to want to actually win games.
Teague has been a disaster for Minnesota and their lack of defensive aptitude as a team is blowing up whatever they wanted to build there. Bringing Teague off the bench and having Smart lead the starting lineup at that end would be a no-brainer.
Its fine to agree to disagree I guess. I think people who are calling this Ainge bidding against himself or whatever are being intellectually dishonest. Say you lose Smart - one of your top 5 players in MPG last season, who has been one of your best players by any metric other than FG% - for nothing. Now are you going to pay Rozier whatever the hell he wants? What if Irving bolts? What if the fantasy trade becomes a realistic possibility and you need a player to attach to Brown/Tatum/top pick/whatever? Until then you were going to need to trade Irving or Horford just to make the salaries match in a trade for a max player, and rob Peter to pay Paul.
It seems to me that most angst about this is grounded in 1) an unrealistically bullish view of the best-case scenario (Irving staying in Boston, perfect health) and 2) a blinkered view of Smart's contributions that exists in spite of his contribution to the bottom line

In the coming market and for trade purposes and in part for Kyrie protection, it's probably a decent move.
He does positively impact the team somehow, despite all the stuff that makes him unpleasant for me to watch.
Which is why I guess I route for a juicy trade from Danny during the season.

Just checked in and saw it's done, noice. This contract will look great in a couple years, ala Bradley (as many have stated).

Btw, Smart, Morris and Yabu gets you into the Butler, Aldridge, Marc Gasol or Kevin Love salary range if one of them shakes loose at the deadline and you're interested. How many teams in the NBA can actually keep their top 6 players and still have the salary numbers + picks to trade for one of those dudes above? Not many, if any..

In that world, it makes sense for Ainge to overpay Smart by 4 million a year on average because he desperately wants to keep him at the guard spot for the next 4 years.
It does line up with this contract.
Otherwise, Ainge would at least attempt to see what he'd get for ring chasers in free agency before paying Smart way more than he'd get in the open market.
I don't know how many times Jimmy Stewart's horsecrap has to get discredited be red flag. Felger & Mazz should be a giant red flag. If it gives them pseudo-content to talk unintelligibly about the Celtics, "Sure, why not??"
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

really sucks to over-payed for an energy-role player whose career isn't trending-up. as smart was a product of the system and wouldn't fit 90% of other team schemes there was no reason to gift him this contact, next year he would've been the same predicament... stuck with his stupid agent w/o a contract. personally i think developing rozier another year would've been best.

I don't trust the sportshub crew sources if they even have one. Not legit. If Kyrie was a threat to leave, he would have traded him for Kawhi Leonard. Nothing to see here. They want ratings so they throwing everything on the hope and see what sticks. Best to ignore them. Kyrie will re-sign once the season is over.

While Smart might not be a starter, there are very few bench players who average 30 minutes, and provide the energy and intensity that can change the course of a game the way Marcus can. Of course it would be nice if Marcus was a better shooter, and this has been well discussed, as has his contributions in other areas. People have their opinions as to which direction the scales tip. Do they tip in favor of his shortcomings, or to his strengths. I say they tip in favor of his strengths. I'm very happy to have him back, and look forward to four more years.

13m a year is heavier than I would have paid and I don’t have much faith in him becoming just an average shooter during that contract, but **** it. We will need his D down the stretch of games and we ne d a contract like this for possible trade purposes anyway.

I feel you, but you need a nap bro. It’s a forum. Full of crazy Celtic fanatics. Not sure what you’re expecting in a Marcus Smart thread regarding money.

Rumor has it that is what Ainge offered, along with a pick, and the spurs had no interest.

Learn what RFA is.
Don't be a prick, I know what RFA is. He didn't get interest FROM ANYONE.
We don’t really know if there was interest. Likely teams didn’t make an offer because they were sure the Cs would match.
