Two of the things that always frustrated me about Elf...

1. His defense was always better in theory than in reality. He had all the tools - height, length, quickness - to be a quality defender, but it never appeared like he truly wanted it on that end. It’s cliche, but defending really is an attitude as much as anything else. You have to be willing to accept the fact that defense isn’t glamorous and your body is gonna take a beating on the thousands of screen collisions you take in a given season. I know his DBPM was usually good, but that’s something to take with a grain of salt because DBPM really rewards defensive rebounding (something EP was always good at) which can skew those numbers pretty significantly.

We’ll see how it translates against bigger and more athletic offensive players, but Briscoe if nothing else has that dog mentality that Payton never appeared to have. He wholeheartedly embraces the challenge of defending and actually fights over/through screens.

2. It took Elfrid four years to become a good finisher at the rim and it had little to do with his finishing ability.

Elfrid is a skilled player around the basket, but what used to drive me insane was the fact that he would intentionally make shots around the rim more difficult because he was afraid of getting fouled. How many times did we see EP have a lane to the bucket, get in the air, and then try some crazy contorting layup against the contest because he didn’t want to just go up strong because he knew he’d have to go to the line.

Briscoe is strong enough to just go through the contest. If he gets fouled, so be it. Unfortunately, right now that’s not a good thing unless Briscoe can develop into at least a 70% shooter. Teams are going to be more willing to put him on the line (and subsequently he’ll get fouled harder than most since teams will want to prevent the shot attempt completely) than most guards.

Shooting wise, if you can believe it, Payton is better. Briscoe still has a long way to go in that area to last more than one year in the NBA.

Well, in Estonia he was a 70% FT shooter with 5 FTA per game in 40 games, so perhaps he was only nervous during SL... By these numbers, he seems to be way better than Elfrid in terms of FT.

Briscoe bruised his shin in the Summer League. My guess is that he’s already healthy enough to play again right now.

Jackson had surgery for a torn labrum in his shoulder I believe in early January. That’s typically a five month recovery time. He said in his intro press conference that he had just been medically cleared, but it seems like the Magic didn’t want to risk anything so soon in meaningless summer games. My guess is that he’ll also be full bore for training camp.

I assume you're referring to me, not aware there is another one on here. Knightro already answered the question though, we've all had a contusion before, fancy word for bruise. :D

Edit: For some reason I just noticed the Justin Jackson part. Of course, he's out for the season. It takes a long time to heal from a re-attachment from a complete tear. Although there are five grades, I believe he had a complete tear. The problem going forward isn't where the re-attachment is, its that it will weaken somewhere else the next time. Usually the repaired area is stronger than what God gave you, once healing and strengthening is over. In the short run he should be fine though, next year that is.

Assuming he’s here. Last I heard he hasn’t signed a contract yet unless I missed it.

So Jackson got surgery in January and he will be out for this year? I thought he was scheduled to be ready for training camp - not the case?

Likely signing straight with Lakeland when he's cleared.

Oh, he had his surgery in January? He should be able to get on the court in some capacity then.

It's tricky, he was playing hurt before Maryland , he probably demaged his shoulder more by playing through. That might cost him nba contract now.

I'm weirdly intrigued by Isaiah Briscoe. He looks like a completely different player than his days at Kentucky. He's in way better shape than I recall from him in college. I'm not sure how effective he'll be in the league, but his game is something the Magic desperately need in terms of ballhandling and playmaking. He's nowhere near as good, but his game reminds me of Kyle Lowry's. Both guys use their girth, ballhandling, and shiftiness to get where they want to go and use their body to take contact; Lowry also started out as a shaky shooter. I wouldn't be surprised if he claims the back up PG minutes.
