I agree. He didn't look good, but we should be collecting draft/young assets instead of giving them away. Vucevic doesn't do anything for us. He might bump us up from 11th to 10th in the West. We have to face it, we would have absolutely everything go right to sneak into the 8th seed this year. The West is stacked.

Warriors
Rockets
Lakers
Thunder
Nuggets
Jazz
Spurs
Blazers
Wolves
Pelicans

then we can debate if the Mavs/Grizzlies/Suns or us are the 11th best.

Vucevic is 27 and averaged 16 & 9 last season. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think trading for him would give us his bird rights to go over the cap to resign him next season when we have the possibility of 2 max contracts? It's all about showing this season we're one or two pieces away.

Dunno if he's a good choice for the Clips at this moment but he has positive trade value. The Magic aren't just going to dump him for trash.

He also plays no defense and will have a pretty large cap hold (around $18 million) if we want to use his bird rights which would negate us being able to use the cap room to sign max free agents.

Bird rights are only good if you’re already over the cap. Look at the Lakers and how they had to handle Julius Randle this offseason.

Right now I'd just waive Evans. I think we are over the roster limit already and haven't still signed Harrell

Well, you take him to camp to see if anybody gets injured. And you pray he's not as bad as he looked in summer league vs. rookies, unsigned FAs and future IHOP busboys.

The thing is that somebody has to go. At this point I'd waive Evans, sign Harrell and after the camp waive the odd man out

No need to waive him now. His contract is guaranteed [$1.4M].

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/2017/07/19/greenvilles-evans-signs-three-year-deal-clippers/492404001/

It was part of our brilliant strategy to lock up him and Sindarius with guaranteed money since 2nd-rounders can seriously cash in Year Two and Three otherwise if they hit.

But so far they haven't hit.

True, it makes no difference but he as a second year player should be doing much better at summer league to be even a bench player in the future imo

Agreed, he was awful: 9-32, 28%.

Signing him long-term seemed like a good idea at the time. Mavs just had to give undrafted UFA Yogi Ferrell 2 yr/$5.3M, almost double what Jawun's making. All we can do now is hope Jawun's light goes on.

Question: according to Keith Smith we're gonna have 58mil in cap space (not counting the possibility of waiving or trading Gallo). am I correct in thinking it's more prudent to use the cap room and sign all our free agents first and then go over the cap to sign Tobias since we have his bird rights, versus extending him during the season? This counts for others like Pat Beverly as well. Will it give us more flexibility that way?

i believe you're correct.

and man that gallo signing looks worse and worse. it wouldn't be so bad if we weren't constantly throwing away first round picks, because we could just package that with him and ship him out.

i wonder how much different the next offseason would be had we held on to the houston pick. we might even actually be rolling out with kawhi from this one with that extra pick. oh well

We could get up to $58 mil in cap space with Tobias' cap hold (I just did a quick summary, so someone correct me if I am wrong). Regarding Tobias, it all depends on what an extension would start at. His cap hold is $22.2 million, so a first year extension figure under that would open up more cap space. Regarding Bev, I dont think he would be any sort of sticking point either way.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

the Houston pick was near-worthless [Omari Spellman from Villanova]
no way it swings the Kawhi trade

Spurs got an All-Star in return
closest we have is Tobias and if we traded him, we're robbing Peter to pay Paul

I don't think Gallo is so bad we'd need to ship him off like that. Lakers could've waived Deng this year if they NEEDED to and it would've only counted for like 3mil against their cap. We're in a slightly similar predicament. Plus I don't know if I'm just crazy but I like Gallo if he can stay somewhat healthy lol. Always been a fan. He just needs to stop punching dudes.. Baby steps

Think Tobias and Harrell have been told they will get paid once the team picks up a max player. Majority of the roster could be back the following year.

The Kings do it again

stole Yogi from Dallas's very good offer and Nemanja Bjelica from the Sixers' good offer by overbidding

It's a good guess, but do we really want to commit to either one at this moment? Even with a nod and a wink?

Trezz is simply not an NBA starter. First of all he's only 6'8", and as our Serbian friend 'Popovich' noted on the other thread, a 21st century big man has to be able to score away from the basket. Trezz is like this crazy dervish in the lane, but he's got no game outside the lane.

As for Tobias, he's a nice player. But he's never scored 20 ppg, let alone 25, which is pretty much what you want for a max or near-max guy. This year will tell. Still, as much as we all like him, he's just not an alpha male who puts a team on his back with blood and gore and guts and veins in his teeth.

He's a nice player, don't get me wrong. If the Clippers don't pay him, someone will.

Like the Kings.

Tobi is pretty talented. He's definitely worth keeping, just not for the max. 18-20 mil/year. Trez fits in our system well with Lou. He can play PF ideally. Again for like 7 mil/yr. These guys just need to accept their roles/value and not think they're worth more than they are. To our advantage the logo and Doc might be able to do that.

The $58M in capspace assumes we let Tobias go to get it, if we keep his cap hold to re-sign him, we have about $36M in capspace. That's if we renounce everyone else, Beverly, Bradley, Milos, Gortat, Harrell, Wes, Luc etc.

There's a tool at the shamsports website that lets you do all those calculations pretty easily: http://www.shamsports.com/capulator?id=4762180275b52f2ef48338098664794

Wait so if we let Tobi go, sign some free agents, we then lose his bird rights as well?

Yup, we either have room for one max free agent + Tobi, or we have room for nearly two max FA's (if we trade Lou for example) but we can't re-sign Tobias.
