But the bigger news for the Cubs' struggling offense is the earlier-than-expected return of left-handed-hitting Daryle Ward, who is scheduled to work out for Piniella and coaches before today's game.

''If he's ready [today], I wouldn't rule it out,'' Piniella said. ''According to the people in Mesa, he's about 90 to 95 percent.''

Ward, hitting .333 in mostly a pinch-hitting role, has been on the DL the last three weeks because of a calf strain. He has been working out at the team's training facility in Mesa, Ariz., but has not had a rehab playing assignment.

The Cubs need to hire a statistical guru, like the Red Sox did with Bill James. Someone to conclusively prove how some of these lineups are hurting offensive production.
