So good to be posting about our rookie in this thread already, and the season hasn't even started yet. Lonnie's a good guy who knows what it's like to be without, and is giving back to his community in this way now that he can.

Lonnie Walker IV assists in giving back to Reading Blacktop basketball league
Lonnie Walker IV and Eric Wise, who works for adidas, will donate 300 pairs of shoes to kids
Lonnie Walker IV's first assist as a pro will lead to hundreds of young basketball players from his hometown wearing new sneakers.

Walker, who signed an endorsement deal with shoemaker Adidas before being drafted last month by the San Antonio Spurs, has teamed with another former Red Knight, Eric Wise, to deliver 300 pairs of shoes to Reading's Blacktop Basketball League.

Wise, an executive at Adidas, got the ball rolling months before Walker was drafted. He watched Walker play at Reading High and then at the University of Miami and advised his company to target Walker as a potential company representative. The link in helping their shared hometown was a natural, and Blacktop officials soon will begin distributing more than $30,000 worth of shoes to local players.

Walker, of course, has been a source of inspiration for local kids who watched him lead the Red Knights to their first state championship in 2017. He has always been a Reading-first guy and is continuing on that path now that he is in the NBA. Wise said plans are in the works to bring Walker, who played in the Blacktop League as a kid, to town for the league's championship games July 26-27 at Geigle Complex.

"All the kids are inspired by Lonnie's story," said Wynton Butler, a Blacktop board member. "It's great that they have somebody they have seen, they have touched, and they have felt make it like this.

"Lonnie has been nothing but genuine in being a role model and carrying himself the right way. That's what he's done from the beginning. He's everything we knew he would be, in terms of how he carries himself. He's been nothing but a perfect role model."

Wise said he and adidas have long-term plans to continue their affiliation with Reading and hope to bring the Red Knights into the fold as a branded team.

"It's a cool story when you have youth (players) up through Lonnie (wearing) that red thread," he said. "Having that is a huge step forward."

Butler said that the KTB program, in addition to teaching basketball skills, emphasizes the importance of being successful, productive citizens.

Rohingya refugee children face onset of deadly monsoon rains
Several days of heavy monsoon rainfall in the Rohingya refugee camps of southeastern Bangladesh pose a major threat to over 100,000 children living in them, UNICEF has warned.

The rain early this week caused landslides which killed five Bangladeshi children and injured several others in the district of Cox’s Bazar. The deaths highlight the danger facing Rohingya refugee children living in fragile and dangerous conditions in nearby camps, many of which are also susceptible to landslides.

As much as 463 mm of rain has fallen within a 24-hour period in Cox's Bazar earlier this week. UNICEF officials say that hundreds of refugee shelters have been damaged or destroyed, affecting at least 4,000 refugees including many children.

Even if the rain stops, the danger of landslides in the hilly refugee camps – which are home to one million people – remains as the water seeps into the ground and destabilizes it further. The sustained heavy rains of recent days are unlikely to abate as the monsoon season reaches its peak.

Scores of facilities run by UNICEF and its partners including Learning Centres and Women and Child Friendly Spaces are at risk.

Humanitarian agencies have made contingency plans for the temporary evacuation of refugees. Alerts have also been issued to the Bangladeshi host population residing in hilly areas near the camps about the possibility of landslides.

UNICEF and its partners are providing tarpaulins and other supplies to reinforce its key programme activities such as Learning Centres to minimize the impact of the rain.

“We are also on the ground in the camps assessing the impact on UNICEF facilities to identify quickly any issues and resolve them so that children can keep learning through the monsoon season," UNICEF Emergency Field Coordinator Peta Barnes said.

Monsoon mitigation efforts have intensified in recent months. Humanitarian agencies have already relocated 36,000 of the highest-risk refugees to safer locations. However, the lack of available land for relocation presents a serious challenge.

At yesterday's training camp, Pop was asked about the Innocence Project on Wrongful Conviction Day. A subsequent article mentioned that Pop wrote a letter to the National Basketball Coaches Association announcing the expansion of NBCA's partnership with the Innocence Project to NBA Voices.

Coach Popovich Letter Announcing Innocence Project Partnership
In 2016 at the Innocence Network Conference in San Antonio, I heard from Sunny Jacobs, who nearly lost her life on Florida’s death row, but remained hopeful by “turning my cell into a sanctuary”; Sylvia Barnes, who visited her son Steven in prison each weekend for 20 years until he finally made it back home for Thanksgiving dinner; and Eugene Vent (pictured below) of the Alaska “Fairbanks Four,” who as a teen falsely confessed to a murder he didn’t commit after hours of police interrogation.

Image

I was disturbed by the horror these exonerees and their loved ones faced, angered at the system that failed them, and moved by their extraordinary resilience.

I know more must be done to combat the systemic flaws in the criminal justice system that cause wrongful incarceration.

I know more must be done to combat the systemic flaws in the criminal justice system that caused their wrongful incarceration.

I’m happy to share that the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) partnership with the Innocence Project and the larger Innocence Network of organizations around the world, will expand to include NBA Voices. NBA Voices is the NBA’s initiative to promote inclusion, uplift voices and bridge divides in our communities.

Our partnership will build greater understanding about issues related to wrongful conviction: innocent people forced to plead guilty, racial inequality, prosecutorial accountability, compensation for exonerated people and more.

We know NBA fans care about justice in their communities, and we’re grateful that NBA Voices and NBCA can bring our fans together with Innocence Project and Innocence Network supporters to work for change.

Innocence movement teams up with NBA Coaches and NBA Voices
The collaboration between the NBA family and organizations of the Innocence Network began in 2014 when representatives from NBCA and the Innocence Project met to learn about the issue of innocent people in prison. Inspired by the exonerees he met at the 2016 Innocence Network Conference, Coach Popovich recorded a PSA along with Coach Rick Carlisle, Coach Steve Kerr and several NBA players in honor of Wrongful Conviction Day.

Over the past four seasons, the NBCA worked with several NBA teams and coaches to invite exonerated people to games, share their stories with coaches and players, and use social media to shine a light on the injustice of wrongful conviction. Most recently, Memphis Grizzlies head coach J.B. Bickerstaff spoke at the Innocence Network conference in Memphis this past March.
