Will Hawks be better next season than many expect?

Do you mean Lin, Baze and Dedmon? Too soon to tell, in season injuries to other teams can play a factor, Dedmon and Lin are both expiring contracts so they may be easier to move, Lin's health also a factor. Bazemore more difficult since it means taking back close to equal salary.

Last season, Prince clearly said several times players (and coach Bud) were playing for the W (at least when they can).
Playing for the win also gives him chance to a better contract in the future...

Assuming that trio of vets play well up to the deadline, i'd have to imagine a package of Lin + Dedmon EASILY gets back an expiring + FRP.

Bazemore will be tougher since he has 2 potential years left on a quite sizable deal, but if he's having a strong 2018 campaign, that he has trade value at the deadline, its highly likely he'll just opt out for a new deal when FA hits so maybe teams will treat him as an expiring to be.

Basically look at playoff squads who want to make noise and have sizable large expirings, hope they do well during the season, have injuries to key players, and then have enough desperation to be willing to trade FRP for some rental vets.

About as likely as it was to trade 'Sova and Belli' last year.

I could see the Spurs or Pelicans being interested in adding PG depth for a playoff run.

Spurs have the 2019 Raptors FRP (Top 20 protected) and their own FRP.
Pels have all their picks.

The Hawks overachieving in the wins department will all come down to how well we shoot from 3. Under Budenholzer's motion offense, the Hawks got more open 3-point shots than nearly every team (I don't have the numbers from last year, but they were number one in open 3-point shots in 2015-16). The problem was that we didn't have the personnel to execute and knock down those 3s.

Now, with Young, Lin, Huerter, Prince, Spellman and even Dedmon and Collins finding their strokes (among others), we have the personnel to execute, but I haven't seen anything in the SL that makes me confident in Lloyd Pierce's offensive coaching ability.

Had we managed to hold on to Bud, we'd I could see us vying for a playoff spot, with Pierce, I see less than 25 wins.

Lin is coming back from serious injury - he probably won't be close to himself until December/January (if ever). And importantly it is obviously not in Hawks' interest for team to be edge playoff contender anyway.

But it is hard not to think, what if.. with JLin given his history .. especially when you have as many legitimately talented players as Hawks do.

Knicks - exceeded expectations when Lin played with them, and made playoffs
Rockets - first year, massively exceeded expectations and made playoffs - most of that had to do with Harden of course
Lakers - a depressing year all around
Hornets - massively exceeded expectations; they were left as being DOA after MKG went out with season ending injury in preseason, but they made playoffs
Nets - when Lin was able to play with them, they exceeded expectations too

Unless Lin comes back very strong, he has 0 trade value. Hope he can mentor cause he took a lot of cap. TS's biggest miss. Dedmon is a must trade for me asap. Anderson, Baze and maybe Len could be moved and TS needs to trade some of those picks he has stashed to move up. My second biggest gripe with this offseason, after Lin, was not maxing his draft assets last draft

With the Lakers when Lin played with Ed Davis, they exceeded expectations too, but they had to tank so they had to dole out some wacky lineups to prevent that.

I doubt Baze and Ded would be the main reason the team wins. If it wins, it's most likely cuz of TraeLin facilitating making everyone play well. I suppose the main scorers would be Prince and Collins? That'd be really good for setting up a winning culture for the young guys even tho not the best thing for the tank. With the new odds, I'm not sure tanking real hard is still such a good thing.

Hey, if he comes back strong, he has trade value. If he doesn't, he helps the tank, mentoring and is an expiring. If he plays OK, he can be resigned as a backup PG, it isn't that bad?

Yeah and the Hawks are in the best position to get top odds at #1. We only got the 5th best player based on draft slot. Rebuilding through the draft requires... getting (some of) the BEST player/s in the rebuild drafts. Don't do that, rebuild don't go far
