Huge day/nigh double-header today. First inning - Braves go down 1-2-3, then Fried gets out of trouble by striking out both Harper and Zimmerman getting them to swing at fastballs high out of the strike zone. He's thrown 26 pitches vs 10 for the Nats' pitcher.

Weird top of the 3rd with 2 outs. The 1st 8 Braves went down easily, and then Gausman comes in to pinch hit for Fried. Fried got hurt on the last out of the 2nd when a batted ball hit him on the side and must have injured a rib. Gausman gets hit on a 3-2 pitch that would have been ball 4. Still no score and Braves offense has done nothing.

So Gausman pinch-hit and never even through a pitch. Allard came in to pitch - did fine in the 3rd and then... just awful in the 4th. It's true that his fastball is only 89-90. He's gotta be perfect with it, and he wasn't. Hopefully at some point his velocity returns - he's just 20 and in the majors. Part of me was disbeliving he really lost his velocity, so to see the Nats tee off on him like this really stings. Even their pitcher got a double.

Nats win the first game of a double header, 8-3. Terrible pitching today by the Braves in game 1.

1-0 Nats in the 3rd, Soto solo HR in the 1st.

Braves had runners at the corners with no outs in the 4th, and didn't come away with jack squat.

Braves come back to beat the Nats 3-1, Inciarte with a 2 run triple in the 9th. Braves and Nats split the double header.


Very solid 6 innings from Newcomb, who was going toe to toe with Scherzer. Newcomb - 6 IP 5 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 6 K 1 HR

Yeah, a great matchup between Newcomb and Scherzer. Props to Biddle who dominated with 4 SO's in 1.2 innings. Minter almost blew it. With 2 runners on, he gave up a shot to Wieters headed to the left field corner, but Camargo was playing to cut off the double, and it went right to him, and he doubled off the runner on 2nd.

It may be time to think about benching Swanson. He's just not hitting in the last month or so, and he also muffed a makable tough chance (though didn't get an error) when the score was tied late in the game. Culberson is more clutch.

7-1 Braves in the 4th, Culberson 3 run HR in the 2nd, Flowers 2 run HR in the 4th, Acuna 2 run HR in the 4th. Flowers HR went 448 ft and Acuna's HR went 452 ft.

Culberson has been so big for the Braves this season, and it was great to see Flowers start hitting again. Charlie's giving Camargo a rest today. He can give practically anyone a rest on any given day. I always like our chances when he's up in a big situation.

Again we lose a pitcher early in the game - Sanchez out with a calf bruise. Parson in, and Parsons can't find the plate. He's gonna need to settle down quick.
