Past Highest Rated Jays Prospect

Post#1 » by Cyrus » Tue Aug 7, 2018 3:00 pm

I was wondering besides Vladdy and Bo being like #1 and #10 as highest-rated prospect in all of baseball.

Curious as to who in the past was highly touted, and rated prospect coming into the organization.

Does anyone recall what Carlos Delagado was rated when he came up with the Jays, first as a catcher, before turning to 1B? How about Shawn Green? Or Tony Fernandes (I believe he came through the jays' organization) or Fred McGriff?

What about Jeff Kent, I know we traded him but was he like top 15 rated prospect? Anyone know?

How about a highly rated prospect, that just ended up being a bust? Travis Snider. I recall him being highly rated, and even had a decent or HR productive season, before never putting it together.

Brett Lawrie? I know he wasn't truly part of the jays organization but was traded as highly rated prospect to the jays. Also, another prospect who didn't really put it together.

What about J. P. Arencibia, I can't recall if he was ever in the top 100.

What I'm trying to get at, is see the value or potential these prospects we have coming in, but also the bust potential that could occur as well, I'm sure I'm leaving out tonnes of prospect positively/negatively in here, just the names that came to the top of my mind.

Have we ever had a #1 prospect in baseball in our history? Or top 10?

Here's 3 guys I thought of:

Quiroz: 35th
Zosky: 22nd
yikes. all smoke, no fire....
Halladay:12th

Other notes (couldn't find a rank - didn't try too hard):
Lloyd Moseby was drafted #2 overall.
Vernon Wells drafted #5.
John Olerud was named 1998 Baseball America College Player of the Year

OH right forgot about Vernon Wells, I'm sure he was highly rated and for the first couple years lived up to the hype.

John Orlerud too.

Wow so we have never had #1 prospect in baseball or #2, but had some really high prospects. Some busts guys in there, but gives some good indication on Vladdy, and Bo Bichette too.

I’m not sure if we had a #1 or #2 guy from 1977-1989. I’m not sure what type of lists they kept back then.

Wow in 94, we had:

Alex Gonzales - Rank #4
Carlos Delgado - Rank #5
Jose Silva - Rank #10
Shawn Green - Rank #28
Some Guy named Boston? - Rank #66 (Might be typo)
Paul Spoljaric - Ranked 99

Might be the highest amount of Blue Jays prospect in the top 100, should have really kept our championship window going way longer than it did. 2 in the top 5, 4 in top 30, 5 or 6 top 100 prospects total.

Hangover from the Pat Gillick era, then Gord Ash turned it all into a disaster.

Edit: and Boston is likely DJ Boston who flamed out. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/profile.asp?ID=22616

Jose Silva ended up being the headliner in the sort of trade that really explains the Jays of that era. Going absolutely nowhere, we traded a pile of (second-tier) prospects for a 35 year old reliever in Dan Plesac, and two pending free agents in Carlos Garcia and Orlando Merced.

Most of the prospects didn't work out, but Craig Wilson had a few okay years, and our big acquisitions helped us climb all the way from 74 to 76 wins.

At one point the Jays had a a NY-Mets like trio of Starting pitchers coming up.

Roy Halladay, Chris Carpenter, Kalvin Escobar..... Wow

Too bad they could not take advantage of this. Halladay was best SP in MLB at one point. Carpenter won NL Cy Young award. And Escobar was a beast who could start like an Ace, come out if the pen as a dominant reliever or even close out games at an elite level.

Anyone have prospect rankings on this trio?

Halladay peaked at #12 in 1999 with BA (the only people that really did rankings then); Carpenter at #27 in 1997, and Escobar at #67 in the same year.

Outfielder Sil Campusano was the top rated MLB prospect for like 2 years.

I wish Dustin McGowan worked out. He's from near where I live. Going in 94 was fun because it was like "there's even more coming?!" with Delgado, Gonzalez, Green.

In terms of pre 1990's players, Sil Campusano I believe was a top 5 prospect. Didn't turn out too well.

In case somebody cares (and likely no one does), but I will note it anyway. In 4 years, the Expos essentially turned the prospect class of 1990 into the best team in baseball

1990 Rankings Related to Expos.
#12. Delino Deshields (who was traded for Pedro Martinez)
#17. Marquis Grissom
#35. Mel Rojas
#37. Moises Alou (was a Pittsburgh Pirate in 1990 ... they got him for Pretty Boy Zane Smith)
#42. Larry Walker
#62. Wil Cordero (1994 All Star)
#66. Willie Greene (also acquired for Zane Smith, and flipped as key part for John Wetteland in 1992)

Although at the time the Baseball America list seemed to value players that are MLB ready much more back then, as compared to now.
