It is the same injury that Ben had right?

I've learned so much about foot injuries just from being a Sixers fan.

it's not like we had two young wings under contract and gave them away either.Stanford wrote:We really could have used the depth he'd provide. This sucks more than usual.

Yes. Same exact injury as Ben, difference being that he did it almost 2 months into the season before Ben. Ben was the last day of training camp, and he was out for the year(although many speculated he could have played at the end of the year if needed).
So we should still see Zhaire at some point this season. Its just difficult because we are likely going to be in a hotly contested playoff race by the time hes fully healed. So the chances of us throwing an already raw rookie into the fire of a playoff race are slim to none.
If you take away Markelle's first 4 games, I would expect Zhaire to have a very similar rookie season to Markelles. Come back with some games left and maybe play decent minutes in certain matchups off the bench, but then ultimately get buried in the rotation come playoff time. Its a shame, because he was going to need all the development time he could get.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
He'll now have time to work on his shot and handle.
Hopefully He has a growth spurt as well.
2019-20 Season we'll have a 20 year old 6'6 version of Kawhi.

Damn. That sucks. Hopefully he makes a full recovery and explodes onto the scene during the 2019-2020 season.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
They'll obviously treat his recovery with extreme caution, but I highly doubt he misses the whole season. He injured himself nearly two months earlier than when Ben sustained his injury and Zhaire doesn't have contract incentives from his sponsors to win ROY.
He should start making his way back around January, but All Star break is probably more realistic.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
Zhaire wont miss the whole season. Despite it being the same injury as Ben, the difference is the Sixers were stealth tanking as soon as Embiid went down during Ben's real rookie season. Nevertheless, it still sucks.

I'm of the mindset that he can watch a lot of film. Watch it and learn. Learn to read plays, learn to know where you should be on defense while you are out injured. Watch those same youtube clips that Embiid watched. Get the mental part of your game together first and the physical will follow.
You want it to be one way....but it's the other way. (Marlo)

I agree. At this point in the process, we shouldn't be banking on a rookie to provide meaningful contribution.
Good opportunity for him to learn to be a true professional, watch lots of film, and refine that jumpshot.
He can develop in the G league and practice, then hopefully get some games in the 2nd half of the season when we start resting guys for the play offs.
Smith was always a long term project... here's his development year.

Why would they not bring him back when he's ready?

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
I suspect part of the reason we drafted Smith was because he could function as a star G stopper in the playoffs right away.
If Zhaire has a normal timetable for recovery, I think they'll still use him this year as a specialist in the postseason.

Totally agree his ability to guard quicker guards and wings played a huge factor into why we drafted him.
If healthy, he'll be on Kyrie/Rozier duty come the playoffs.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
Zhaire was a good college defender, but I believe he’d get exposed by any guard with elite speed or forward that outsizes him at this stage of his career. I feel like he’d be good against Marcus Smart. Add to the fact that he’ll miss most of the season, this missing the nuances of playing in the NBA, and I feel like he’s unplayable in the playoffs. He’s a pretty massive project still, imo.

Yeah there I also don't see them throwing him in a playoff situation when he comes back, unless he really impresses everyone when he comes back....which I really don't anticipate cause he has so much to develop in his game.
Even if he comes back, I only see very limited mins and this season will basically be lost to him.
