the mueller investigation is a lot of dynamic strategy and hidden variables, and i wouldn't expect any expert to have a firm handle on predicting where it'll end up or interpreting day to day happenings for strategic fundamentals.

regardless where it ends up, the trump situation is a devastating reality check on the viability of the american system of government, politics and law. it is a pearl harbor level counterintelligence event, but this time there's no inevitability of victory for the living.

the american system is pretty good at some routine and compartmentalized processes of protection, but it may be fatally flawed in the politics.

the irony is that, the problem compared to china is the lack of a deep state capable of strategic action.

before the tax bill was passed there were a ton of reports about corporate donors - koch level and down - telling the republicans that if they didn't pass this bill for them they would cut off their funding

The GOP is the perfect illustration of spineless legislative toads capitulating to capitalists who are willing to torpedo freedom for profits. Germany had many industrialists who surrendered to Hitler to line their pockets with war profits. And the irony here is unless top CEO's come out more squarely against incipient fascism they will be accountable for it taking root in our political system as much as the complacent voting public.

I don't think you understand how it is humanly possible to support this administration's economic policies as blows against the empire while they print money to pay off the exploding debt they created. I mean, after all, the central bank is controlled by Trump, not Soros.

Manafort trial Day 9: Witness suggests Trump role helped Manafort nab loans

What was covered today was Manafort falsifying documents to get a $16M loan in 2016 from a very small undercapitalized Chicago Bank without the assets to make that loan.

The approving officer expected to be offered a position in Trump's cabinet. He wanted to be Secretary of the Treasury. So that is basically the supposed rationale for why they gave him the loan.

TBH, I knew all of the above for over a year, but it is a significant portion of the trial that had to be covered.

As far as the Pay for Play favoritism, Manafort left the guy holding the bag and he was not offered any role in the Trump administration. Manafort basically toyed with the guy on top of falsifying documents to get the loan. So that kind of promise baiting may be some kind of crime unto itself.

One thing I'm not sure of is if the Bank itself is being probed, because they had something like only $80M in assets which is small for most banks and the question I've had in the past is whether or not they were another point of U.S. entry for laundering Russian funds.

About this trial per the OP:

Judge Ellis is badgering, but every step of the way he has granted the prosecution the upper hand over the defense's objections. It is not uncommon for a judge to come off as heavy-handed towards the side that has overwhelming evidence to its advantage in order to appear impartial.

Ellis is known in his district for being a crotchety MF, but more important is this will be the defining case of Ellis' career as a judge. Most judges never have a case of this historical nature cross their desks.

He is older and will probably retire soon and it is very likely the man does not want his name to be associated with rubber stamping the take-down of a president and his men. It appears he'd rather go down in history as having been impartial or even tough on the winning team than worry about being remembered as a cordial guy.

So, while he is sometimes being a pain in the butt and quibbling over some details, he has not effectively done anything to block the Mueller team's prosecution.
