He's not going to play any meaningful minutes this year. He starts the year behind Horford, Baynes, Theis and Yabusele in the big man pecking order. Plus whatever minutes Tatum and Morris play as bigs. The Celtics have no plans for Williams to play in the NBA this season. If he does, it means he's either way better than anyone thinks. Or the whole season went to ****.

And for those saying "throw him 10 minutes a game", then you can't get pissed when Stevens is playing 12 guys a night. Because that is the only way that sort of thing works.

How do you know? Did Brad Stevens tell you his plan?

I mean I spent a ton of time around the team and talked to everyone I could and Williams was a big topic of conversation. There is also the fact that he's never played in the NBA, the team is a contender, and he's at best the 4th big in the rotation.

But yeah. You need the coach to tell you exactly what the plan is.

Sometimes some of you make it pleasant to walk away from here and not post as much.

Sorry if I offended you.. I do hope you continue to visit this board. I for one really enjoy your posts. I also like RWIII's length and athleticism, which is a powerful combo though.

Although RWIII did not play much during SL, when he did play he seemed to play well and affect the game positively for the Celtics. The sixers seemed to stop driving to the basket during the short period he played. That is much different than James Young who came in at 17 yrs old and needed a ton of development befire playing. Also Brad Stevens interveiw would indicate that he thinks RWIII can help this season, because he can provide elite defense and rebounding. Now the Celtics are much deeper than when JY played for them, so PT will be harder to get, but IMO Brad Stevens will find a way to use RWIII unique defensive abilities. We shall see how things progress in TC.

You are kidding, right? He played only 6 minutes and the only thing he showed was his athleticism. All I saw was a guy who was baiting on every possible fake.

With about four months to go of his first pro coaching before he has a shot at his first regular-season game. IMO he's closer to being a quality rotation player than Yabs is. Defense matters.

Have you even paid attention to who Smitty is and what he does? Like all those bleacher report twitter updates in the summer league. Yeah, that's him. Maybe the coach did tell him, but being a member of the media, he wouldn't be able to say that on a message board regardless. Enjoy what he shares and leave it at that.

You can tell the celtics think highly of him post nba draft, and in his introductory press conference. Here are some of the videos.

If he plays well during training camp, and pre season, i don't see him going to the G league. Even if he goes to the G league. It wouldn't be for long. He provides elite shote blocking, and rebounding which the celtics don't have. If he fulls develops i have as the second best big behind Al Horford.

Well I think your posts are pretty informative certainly hope you continue to post here. Its just that I have been waiting for years for Danny to draft a big and then the guy I wanted before the draft falls to the Celtics and Danny drafts him. It was special. RWIII will definitely need time to reach his potential and its not certain that he will, but if he does WOW.

It's par for the course for the randoms to question board insiders. I stopped caring a while ago, lol.

Leprechaun isn't a random.

And listen, as the son of Aggies, no one on this board was happier to see us draft Robert, but if you actually have any sort of emotion invested in this dude you are probably doing the whole NBA fan thing incorrectly. He doesn't matter.

FWIW, every single rookie presser sounds exactly the same. Everyone got the guy they wanted and can't believe they fell to them. This includes the Suns and DeAndre Ayton. Those pressers are almost worthless, unless there is some form of injury update.

And I think Williams has the potential to be a good big man. But down the line. Expecting the 27th pick to play rotation minutes on a contender this year isn't reasonable. It's also very unfair to the kid.

It's also unfair to Daniel Theis, who is a better player than Williams.

Williams will have to be on-board with this 100%. There are plays he could make in the G-League, such as freelancing to block shots, that he will not be able to make in the NBA. If he follows such temptations, he won't develop the way he should.

I would imagine the coaches will be on him to play in exactly the fashion he would in the NBA. That means focus on setting picks, rolling to the basket, serving as a high-post outlet to swing the ball, playing positional defense, calling out coverages, getting to the correct spot at the right time, etc. His stats won't matter as much, then. In fact, outlandish points, rebounds, and especially blocks would be a negative if he breaks away from his responsibilities to attain those counting stats.

As we all know, Maine exists so that the player can practice with the Celtics as much as possible, and get game reps within the Celtics system while not hurting the NBA team. The disadvantage is that the G-League is still substandard in talent level and team-oriented play to many European teams.

If the front office decided in say February that Williams could use better competition, would the Celtics and Williams be allowed to agree mutually to sending Williams out on loan. Say David Blatt's Olympiakos team has some injury trouble and needs a big man for a couple of months. Are the Celtics and Williams expressly forbidden from entering into a loan agreement with Olympiakos (or any other non-NBA team)?

Unfortunately, no loan agreements are allowed. It's something that has been discussed in the past, but will ultimately never come to fruition as the NBA grows the NBAGL.
