Driving around Florida will suck up plenty of time for someone wanting to see the sights.

Game 7 of 2013 NBA Finals is on NBATV right now. Everyone remembers game 6 with Ray Allen’s shot. But I don’t remember a dang thing about game 7. Also, I really miss having a team that had a shot at the finals.

Yeah I know that's why we are only doing Florida (South Florida actually) as we are from Paris in itself a metropolitean area, and also we already have our experiences in travelling to main occidental europe countries, africa, eastern europe... so I guess I can say we aren't your typical tourist with deluded ideas :)

SunKing wrote:Hi everybody ! Random longtime french RealGMer here !

So, I'm sending all the Miami/Florida people on this forum because me and my girl chosed our vacation for next year and it will be... Miami !

So my fiancée is an ex travel agent so she already her own benchmark and gave a 10 pages document about stuff todo there etc... Then I was like hey I'm a RealGMer for 8 years so it's time to have a return on investment and ask my dear fellow Miami forum fans what's good to do at their home :D

So some random thoughts/questions (It already would be gold if I could have some answer):
- It will be our first time in the US !!! During 2 weeks
- Our idea is to reside in Miami, rent a car then do all the rest by ourself.
- We absolutely hate All Incluse resort stuff or guided tour.
- We're used to Airbnb when we travel (so any idea for an ideal location ?)
- We are roughly around 30 yo me and her. So we're open on any night stuff to do (even tho we aren't into clubbing that much anymore) ?
- We would like to go to Key West (is it really an interesting place in itself ?)
- Also Orlando for Universal/Disney one day or two as my girl is really really into that type of stuff.
- I want to do a ride of your guys typical boat that I forget the name ! Just like in movies
- Sorry for the cliché, but I will not go out of the state of Florida as long as I didn't smoke a cigar with a random old ass cuban.
- We would like to go during any month of March/April/May (on a weather level which one is the better)
- How much for decent NBA tickets for going to see the Heat ?
- At the end of those 2 weeks I want to feel like "Damn, really I saw the real South Florida/Miami"

I'm open on any tip, anything to do, anything to avoid etc...

I know I sound like a guy who talk to a travel agent but hey... I rather ask the people

Good tips by gom and Heat3. Let me add a little culture to that...

While in Miami, you MUST go to 8th street (Calle Ocho - Little Havana) and have a drink at Ball & Chain. One of the oldest night clubs in Miami (1930's). Enjoy an excellent Mojito, some Cuban cuisine and hopefully you catch a live Salsa show. You can easily spend a few hours there.

https://ballandchainmiami.com/

Next to Ball & Chain you can have some of the most creative ice creams in town at Azucar!

http://www.azucaricecream.com/

If you keep walking up and down 8th street, you will find the best Cuban Cigar shops where you can sit with a "Coladita" (Cuban Espresso) and smoke it in a rocking chair. There is also the famous "Domino Park" where you can challenge a few hardcore Cuban Domino players and.....lose. :D

Image

Also good food in this area:

One of the most famous Cuban Restaurants in Miami, Versailles.
http://www.versaillesrestaurant.com/

True authentic Mexican food (not that Tex-Mex crap you eat in those typical restaurant chains), El Taquito
http://eltaquitomexicanrestaurant.com/taqueria-el-taquito-little-havana-miami.html

All of these places are within a few blocks of each other in Calle Ocho.

Another neighborhood in Miami that is fun is Wynwood. The urban artistic area has several clubs, live music, bars, breweries and restaurants to enjoy to go along with the graffiti and street art in the neighborhood. Very popular place in Miami near the downtown area. They always have some sort of event on the weekends. You might be lucky and hit one.

Image

Visit the Wynwood Yard and J Wakefield Brewery.

http://www.thewynwoodyard.com/

https://www.jwakefieldbrewing.com/

I love St. Agustine and their historic district also but be aware that it is a 5 hour drive so you'll spend 10-12 hours of your trip in car with not much of a scenery. The drive to Key West is much more fun, although it is also about 3-4 hour drive to the last key. Well worth it though. While there, visit Duval street and enjoy a Key Lime Pie.

Visit Orlando for sure. Disney has 4 parks worth visiting. Magic Kingdom is nice but more geared to kids. I always enjoy Epcot although it is smaller. Disney Hollywood Studios just added Toy Story Land and are finishing up Star Wars. It's always fun. Animal Kingdom might be the least interesting to me but it is nice too. Universal Studios and Island of Adventures are great visits too. You can't go wrong with any of the parks really. Just expect to spend a whole day at each park. If you go to Orlando, visit at least 2 of the parks.

While in Miami, take the "All Aboard Florida" train in downtown Miami with stops at downtown Fort Lauderdale and downtown West Palm Beach. Spend the day traveling. Visit Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale and City Walk in West Palm Beach. Start super early and return on the last train of the day. It's an awesome way to spend the day.

https://gobrightline.com/

Other places in the South Florida area:

South Beach (Lincoln Rd and Ocean Drive. Visit the Clevelander).
Brickell (In the downtown area. Very exclusive restaurants and clubs. Visit Brickell City Centre).
Design District (Nice art galleries, designer shops and restaurants. I love the architecture of the Buena Vista historic neighborhood right next to it too).
Coconut Groove (Very nice neighborhood also. Coco Walk is being rebuilt. Maybe it's finished by next year before your visit?)
Coral Gables (Take a drive thru it, enjoy the architecture. Visit Sunset Place).
Sawgrass Mills Mall (2nd largest mall in the U.S. Tons of brands outlets. It's about a 40 minute drive north from Miami in Sunrise)

If you are into museums:
Vizcaya Museum (awesome gardens)
Perez Art Museum (next to AA Arena, home of the Heat)
Frost Science Museum (next to Perez Art Museum in downtown Miami)

If your only options are March/April/May, do March or April. It's nice and sunny but not humid like in the Summer. In March, you might even feel a nice breeze. You'll appreciate it, especially when spending the whole day outdoors in Florida.

I hope this helps you some and good luck.

Wow ! Thanks you a lot ! Especially on the Cuban culture and the cuban/mexican restaurants. As cliché as it sounds, we are french and we are kind of "picky" on our food (especially in restaurant ofc, if we're going to a fast food we know what we'll get)... So any good venue for a good restaurant is very welcomed.

Brother brand typewriter's malfunctioning and I just got that piece. Letters are fading; likely the ribbon and it's not like I can go down the street and get it fixed. Less than half a month of August left.

Netflix is overrated
they dont have a big selection imo, been searching for certain movies/tv show & they just dont have it
They remove movie/tv shows constantly.

& any thoughts?

I agree, they had a better selection when they started out and either got cheap or the media companies don't want to give them their content. I got rid of Netflix. best bet to use one of those sites that tell you where certain shows are streaming. then pick the best service for you.

Hi to y'all !

Again thank all of you guys (especially heat3, heat4life and gom !) for your great advices on Miami ! Me and my fiancée booked our flights and we are going to Miami from 15th to 29th Mars, I can't wait !!!

We are planning to spend our whole 2 weeks mainly based in Miami with 1 night at Key Largo, 2 nights in Key West. Then we'll take sometimes to go to Everglades one day from Miami.

Finally we aren't going to Orlando and parks as it is too far away, we might have done it if we had 3 weeks but on 2 weeks we didn't feel like spending 2 days for parks finally and we rather just appreciate fully Miami with some sparring time where we can just do nothing.

Also looking foward to see a Heat game :D

Return to Miami Heat
