What went wrong for Cal and Kentucky?

Post#1 » by DeathLineup » Thu Aug 16, 2018 6:31 am

What went wrong for Cal and Kentucky? They used to be the recruiting powerhouse. They used to have all the nation top recruits. Now they basically have nothing. Duke led by Coach K is the new recruiting powerhouse.

    Duke: Kyrie Irving (#4)
Kentucky: Enes Kanter (#3), Brandon Knight (#6)
2011
    Duke: Austin Rivers (#1)
Kentucky: Anthony Davis (#2), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (#3), Marquis Teague (#5)
2012

2014
Duke: Jahlil Okafor (#1), Tyus Jones (#7)
    Kentucky: Karl-Anthony Towns (#4)
2015
    Duke: Brandon Ingram (#4)
Kentucky: Skal Labissiere (#1), Jamal Murray (#9), Isaiah Briscoe (#10)
2016

Yet Duke has nothing to show for those recruiting titles. You need experienced players along with one and dones.

Doesn’t matter because once high schoolers are allowed back in the draft, both schools will be back to signing second rate players.

I think it’s more about Dukes rise than Kentucky’s fall. Something is going on at Duke that wasn’t before. Could be a policy change, maybe something shady, or maybe they just got legit better at recruiting - who knows.

Jeff Capel left Duke, so it will be interesting to see if their recruiting stays to that level.

Yeah it will be a mute issue in a couple of years which is when all these big money recruiters who couldn't coach their way out of a paper bag will hang them up.

Duke remembered that it's a private university with five times the endowment of UK, and is also not plagued by state budget cuts.

Damn. This might be the real reason of Kentucky's fall.

Cal is a smart, smart man.

I feel like Duke and Coach K used to have some type of unwritten rule about not wanting one-and-dones and trying to build a consistent culture.

Then Kyrie kind of broke that mold and Coach K realized it wasn’t as big a deal as he thought it would be as long as his entire team isn’t made up of one-and-dones. Once Duke was more open to those type of players they wanted to play with a coach who has coached the best nba players and has their respect
