I'd love to hear your reasoning about Divac. Him being in Charlotte for only two years makes it tough for me. Obviously, the franchise's history is such that he's competing with a lot of three-season guys. Yet I just don't consider his two years to be spectacular enough. I think that was the only place where I had a different selection. Went with Mase.

Obviously, anything of that sort is cool and appreciated, but the line-up is way too biased towards the last years.

Maybe a game we could play? Create a 10-game playlist which would introduce one to Charlotte's best moments and better players.

Don't have the time to ponder too much about this now, but I think I would add that first win against the Bulls at home and, perhaps, one of the beatings the team gave Riley's Heat in the 2001 post-season.

That's a great idea Lamar, I agree the NBATV folks took the easy way out by scheduling all those recent games. Just a few awesome games off the top of my head in chronological order. Pretty much all from the playoffs:

-12/23/1988 Chicago Bulls at Charlotte Hornets: One of Charlotte's first 'signature' victories. Future owner Michael Jordan has an excellent game (33pts 6 steals, 14/26 from field) but Kurt Rambis makes The Hive erupt with a buzzer-beating tip-in that secures the 103-101 win for the upstarts.

-"The Shot", Zo's buzzer-beater in the playoffs against Boston: Already on the sched because it's such a no-brainer

-1993 semifinals Game 3 vs Knicks: Also already on schedule. Was really an amazing game (2 OT!)

-Hornets vs Hawks 1998 quarterfinals Game 4: Everyone expected Atlanta to stomp us that year even though we were the 4th seed in a 4/5 matchup. The Hawks had swept us that year and even the Observer predicted Atlanta winning in a short series. Charlotte jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead at home and then Anthony Mason brought it home in Game 4. Steve Martin jubilantly declares "The Hornets can taste the deep dish pizza in Chicago!!!" as Charlotte blows it open late.

-Hornets vs Bulls Game 2 1998 semifinals: Speaking of Chicago, after squandering a fast start in Game 1 and eventually falling apart the Hornets bounced back with help from Dell Curry and BJ Armstrong. The bench duo heated up late in the game and edged the Bulls to bring the series home tied 1-1.

-Hornets vs Heat Game 3 2001 quarterfinals: Charlotte obliterates Miami in the 3rd quarter for the second straight game and complete a shocking sweep for the 6th seed. This entire series was gold. The Jones/Mason for Mashburn/Brown trade was supposed to be the last step to contention for the Heat. Instead the Hornets get the last laugh with a sweep where the Heat completely collapsed in the 3rd quarter of games 2 and 3.

-Hornets vs Magic Game 1 2002 quarterfinals: An ugly game with a great finish. Jamal Mashburn exits early with a mysterious illness that ends his playoff run, things look bleak. Baron steals the ball from Tracy McGrady as time expires to preserve the victory as The Hive celebrates.

-Hornets vs Magic Game 3 2002 quarterfinals: The game that helped make replay reviews a reality. With the game tied with 0.6 seconds to play Baron Davis hits a wild 3 pointer from Steph Curry range to win....but no! Refs wave it off although replays clearly show the shot was out of his hand. Charlotte scraps their way to the win in OT.

Screw Bernie Fryer. That play always comes to my mind in situations of "ref could make the right call, but decides to stick with the rule book". **** the rule book. Baron took the shot right in front of him. It wasn't even close. And he still demonstrably waved it off just because Baron supposedly didn't have enough time to have done so.

Yeah, it was a real travesty. I definitely had some conspiratorial thoughts at the time, "Does Stern not want us to advance since we're a lame duck team? Is it all rigged???" The pending move made everything seem so dubious.

Its a shame because that 01-02 team was better than its 44 win record reflected. Jamal Mashburn, who was their leading scorer at 21ppg and in his prime at the time only played 40 games due to injury and then missed the playoffs. Had he been available, they would have had a solid shot at beating NJ in the second round.

With Mashburn out though, this was the point where Baron Davis really took a leap towards being the all-star player he is remembered for being in the early 2000s by averaging 22 points, 7 reb, 8 assists and 3.5 steals during that 01-02 post season.

Would love to have seen some bobcat games on there, maybe the triple-overtime game versus the Lakers. And the Adam Morrison game against the Spurs was pretty awesome as well. Surely there's a kick-ass Gerald Wallace game in their vault somewhere. As for recent games the overtime game versus the Kings were Troy Daniels hits the three at the buzzer to win would be near the top of my list. There was also an early Larry Johnson game maybe 1992 where he hit a shot at the buzzer to beat Seattle in Seattle. And there's the game that Dell Curry always talks about where he hit A3 at the buzzer versus the Golden State Warriors back around 1990 where he and Muggsy changed the play.

That 92 Seattle game was great.

One of my personal favorites has always been the last home game of the season in 93. Fri, Apr 23, 1993 vs Bulls. LJ went toe to toe with Jordan in the closing minutes of the game and we won. Bulls lost HCA to the Knicks with that loss.

The 2001 Home playoff win vs the Heat would be good too just for variety.

personal bias? plus was trying to stick close to a 1st/2nd team w/ positions. Mase was tough to watch at times, despite the stats. He kinda demanded the ball in his hands.

no doubt about that. reason why he had a falling out with George Karl at Milwaukee.

some thoughts...

I think I have the triple OT game against the Lakers. If that's the Kobe 57pt or smth game, then I definitely have it.

The Adam Morrison game is the last time Charlotte has won at San Antonio. Just let that sink in...

Gerald Wallace's career high can easily be found on youtube. But for whatever reason it seems like such a blah game:

Here's the Larry Johnson Seattle game:

This is my all time hornets/bobcats team

davis
rice
mashburn
johnson
mourning

kemba
richardson
wallace
mason
oakafor

bogues
gill
jones
divac
jefferson

I struggled with who I would take between baron and kemba but I slightly picked davis. Curry was overrated couldn't defend but decent in passing lanes. Not sure why I constantly see Mashburn as a second on third stringer when imo hes one of the best all around players to ever play this game.
UPDATED 7-5-2025

These are who I want with our picks in order

Fears
Raynaud
Kam Jones
Taelon Peter - or Will Richard
Chase Hunter - summer league invite

You voted and now the results are in! The Charlotte Hornets have announced the first two players selected by the fans as part of the 30th Anniversary Team. Congratulations to Al Jefferson and Kendall Gill, who finished 10th and ninth in voting, respectively.

Neither of those guys should be on the team, but burning a spot on Gill really stings.

Return to Charlotte Hornets
