Aug 17-19 The pray for rain thread - Jays @ Yankees

Post#1 » by dagger » Fri Aug 17, 2018 1:57 pm

I don't know when the Jays got into NY after that last rain-delayed game in KC, but it must have been in a 4-5 am range. So you have to think that tonight would a good time for the baseball Gods to deliver MORE RAIN, and in great abundance. And there is a T-Storm treat in the forecast. Can Gene Kelly play 3B?

Aug 17 7:05 pm EDT
Marcus Stroman (4-8, 5.03 ERA) vs Lance Lynn (8-8, 4.46 ERA)

Aug 18 1:05 pm EDT
Sean Reid-Foley (0-1, 5.40 ERA) vs Luis Severino (15-6, 3.27 ERA)

Aug 19, 1:05 pm EDT
Ryan Borucki (2-2, 3.29 ERA) vs Jay Happ (13.6, 3.86 ERA)

You almost never see major league players picked off first. Happens a lot more in the minors.

Hopefully this is his last start at the MLB level this year. People who watched his first start predicted this would happen. He is not ready.

SRF is a wee bit of a work in progress.

Agreed, but today also shows that you need some decent defence behind rookie pitchers - like outfielders who can run decent routes, sure handed second basemen, etc.

Jansen may already be the best hitter on the team. OK, probably not, but is this offense every frustratingly incompetent.

Hopefully the poor pitching performance is more SRF's pitching and less Jansen's game calling.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

SRF has zero command at the moment. Isn't a hell of a lot the catcher can do under the circumstances.

I get Kyle Drabek vibes from Reid Foley.

Drabek could never strike anyone out in the upper minors, which was a bad combination with his lack of control. SRF has much better swing-and-miss stuff, but it's only in the past few months that he had any semblance of command, so it'll take a while.

I guess I based it mostly on lack of command and only seeing 2 starts from SRF but they don't seem the same statistically.

From blue jays facebook:

Danny Jansen is the first catcher in team history with a hit in each of his first 4 games.

Pannone is back up, Justin Shafer joins as a new reliever, and Santos is optioned back to Buffalo. One more move coming on the 40-man roster.

Update: Aaron Sanchez to the 60 Day DL - retroactive to June 22. Man, this is the world's worst contusion. Please someone in the media, there has to be more than this to that story.
