Re: Celtics Trivia Game
The former Boston Celtics player who played in Roma and provided to shoot an entire game only with his left hand because his dominant hand was broken, with very good percentages? Did someone asked that?

Your knowledge rocks, Davor.
Now give us the back story on Stojko!
I know he was hindered by poor vision. He had problems with lenses. Defensively he was still very good, great blocker due wingspan and timing. But he came to the Celtics when Chief was still going strong, and for some reason coach Chris Ford prefered Joe Kleine as Parish primary backup, with McHale, Pinckney and occasionaly Bird holding 4 spot.
He was a victim of euro skepticism in the early 90's. Even Dražen Petrović was in Rick Adelman's doghouse. He came to the NBA as a 27yo and never really got a chance. And a little trivia...his son Antonio Vranković currently plays for Duke
Yes, I am following Antonio. I gather Stojko and his family now live in the USA, and Antonio went to high school here.
In Jack McCallum's Unfinished Business, his book about the 90-91 Celtics, he has an interesting tidbit on Stojko. (That was Stojko's rookie year, as a 27 year old.) He wrote about how Kevin McHale said the Cs needed a superstar to come in and lead the ream now that the Big Three were fading and McHale pointed at Vrankovic and said something to the effect of "That could be the guy." I guess Stojko was getting the other players' attention in practice.
The Cs had high hopes for him. 7-1 with a huge wingspan and plus athletic ability. Chief was 37 in 1990 so his end was on the horizon. They even hired Dave Cowens to be Stojko's personal tutor. Cowens finally said that the Cs needed to get Stojko on the floor because the only way he could develop was in actual games. But like you said, Chris Ford had no interest in that.
The Cs started the 90-91 season 29-5 and looked like they could win 65-70 games and yet another title. The team was incredible, playing the best basketball since 1986. So, in Ford's defense, he probably did not think the team needed Stojko that year to win. But Larry got hurt again and that was the end of that. The team "limped" to a 56-26 record.
You can't help but wonder what would have happened had Ford made a commitment to Stojko and had he developed into a defensive stopper in the middle. Maybe all he needed was a good optometrist. The early 90s might have looked a bit different with Lewis, Gamble, Shaw and Dee Brown along with the Big Three and Stojko.
I think you are a little too high on Vrankovic. He was kind of a headcase, IMO didn't care enough, and while he was great on defense he was almost nothing on offense. It's true that as part of the first generation of euro players he had some disadvantages, but that wasn't longer the case when he played for the Wolves, and thats a pretty accurate reference of what he would have been in Boston, probably a little better and Larry could extract, literally extract, some points from him. But that's It, miles away from a difference-maker.

You are obviously correct or else he would have panned out. What was interesting was the way people around him responded to him, at least initially.
Take a crack at the trivia game. Our international caucus is kicking ass.

Re: Celtics Trivia Game
Ok...one more trivia question...
In the Celtics history, only 6 players had career highs (as a member of Celtics, regular season or playoff)of at least 40 points and 20 rebounds.
One is Larry Bird with career highs of 60pts and 21reb.
Who are the other five?

Davor, you are all-NBA poster. 9/9. Great work. Gilmore is the tough one in the 80s.
I have a special one for you now:

If we had gotten Dino in 89 when he was drafted instead of 93 I think he would have had a superb NBA career.

Re: Celtics Trivia Game
He was great but was a though time for euros in the NBA, even one of the greatest to ever play the game was regarded like trash in Portland... At that time the Italian Championship was the best in Europe and he certainly improved in Rome, he had all the tools but not the personality do all on his own, an help from vets would have benefited him greatly so maybe if you put all on the plate 90/91 would have been ideal.Elrod is Back wrote:ermocrate wrote:DavorFanCroatia wrote:

Off topic...my favorite former Celtics player who played in Italy was Darren Daye. I remember how he and Darwin Cook with Scavollini Pesaro almost beat Patrick Ewings Knicks in McDonalds Open 1989. They lead by 3 points and then Dominique's brother Gerald Wilkins scored buzzer beater three to send game in overtime in which Knicks won. Daye killed Knicks.
Also a few US posters know that one of the biggest Celtics draft busts Joe Forte lead his Italian team from Siena to Italian championchips...i believe 2007 or 08...
