The Miami Heat proved this can be a false statement.

Florida has no state tax. The current Magic can probably generate two max deals for the 2020/21 season. A Miami Heat type team can be constructed. That construction probably stars with a max PG, and that might mean Walker.

Terry Rozier, RJ Barrett, Jonathan Isaac, Aaron Gordon, Mo Bamba this would be the ideal roster next year. Plus our 2nd and Bkn 2nd which we can package to get a PG or draft a PG and a shooter or stretch 4.

you have to win lottery to get Barrett... Looking at Hawks roster, they are set for 10 wins this year.

They changed the lottery odds for next year bottom 3 teams each have a 14% chance of winning it and you can jump into the top 4 unlike previous years were it was only top 3.

worst team still can't fall below 5# pick and second worst below 6#.
Tanking will still be a thing.

New lottery also brings crazy amount of percentage to draft below your actual position.
5th worst team has just 2,2% chance to draft 5th, 19,7% chance to draft 6# and 27% chance to draft 7#

According to tankathon , Magic, predicted to finish with 7th worst record, are basically locked to draft 8#, with odds to draft 1# to 4# is 8% for each pick.

http://www.tankathon.com/pick_odds

I'm not sure what will happen if somebody from let's say 6 worst record wins lottery and how that impacts other picks. Confusing since this will be first time with new format.

If Bamba becomes a star I could see his personality attracting another star or two.

The Heat had Wade who already was a championship player.

Hence we need to FIND A STAR IN THE DRAFT before freaking out about the rest.

Edit:

The “no state income tax” argument always gets thrown around in a vacuum without much understanding. States are going to get their money one way or another. The overall tax burden is a better indicator of what is happening. Now, in 2018 Florida comes in at #47 (lowest taxes) so this is a good year to be in Florida. But just 5 years ago Florida was #26. Clearly this is a volatile system which changes greatly as administrations change. It is hard to imagine states without income tax ever being among the worst in tax burden but they often find a way to be average. That is... nothing special in terms of savings.

If players are going to buy very modest homes and live a cheap life style then they can definitely make this work for them by avoiding the sales and property tax spikes. But how many 20 year old millionaires are going to do that?

The thing I am frustrated by is how the Dwightmare completely removed the advantage of a new Arena and new training facility. The Magic had a five-year window to sell FAs on a shiny new building. At 5+ years old now, the Amway Center is no longer "new."

Sad.

New arenas are for fans; not players. I cannot recall a scenario where a major free agent decision was made based heavily on the arena.

Let's accept I do not agree. For me I see a new area as a FA marketing tool. But I think we disagree.
