Really?

Hell yeah, safi! Easily.

WM17 against Rock
Three Stages of Hell
Summerslam against Angle

You could argue that these three matches are objectively 5 stars, or close. Plus, a match that I would give five stars to, one of my all-time favorites: vs. Benoit in Edmonton.

Throw in a bunch of good to very good matches with Jericho, Benoit, Angle and Rock throughout the year.

And then you have a handful of awesome tag matches with Triple H.

The dude was dialed in that year. He was incapable of having a bad match.

The WM 17 match was very good, but its hard for me to detach the match from the finish. I'm not quite as high as those other 2 matches but they were both very good

From a macro perspective, I'll never be able to detach the match quality from him at that time for various matches from that being
the year and the character of maybe the worst heel turn in wrestling history.

Austin, in terms of character work, was at his best during this run. He was a **** monster as an actor. He bought in completely to this insecure, paranoid shell of Stone Cold that he'd become. Everything worked. The jealousy, neediness, fear of losing his spot. To use a Steve Austin phrase, you couldn't see through it. It was totally believable. It also had the benefit of being some of the few times wrestling was actually funny when it was trying to be funny. Even though Raw was lousy and convoluted at the time, Steve's work with Vince, Angle and The Alliance was always compelling. Those segments, by themselves, are great segments. We'd be lucky to have work of that caliber today.

I think his heel turn has a bad reputation for a few reasons:

- It's usually a bad idea to turn someone heel when no one in the universe wants to boo them.
- The invasion was one of the worst long term angles in wrestling history.
- Steve Austin has publicly and repeatedly expressed his distaste for the heel turn.

These things, I think, have affected the popular opinion of his heel turn. The character was well-written and well-performed, despite what was going on around it.

The WM 17 match was very good, but its hard for me to detach the match from the finish.

Wow, I think the match is an all time great because of the finish. This moment in particular:

https://youtu.be/otnfrc7b0Mo?t=1980

... is so **** awesome. Austin holds up Rock to allow his historic enemy to hand him the victory, ensuring him of what has always been most important to him: the WWF Championship. But Rock kicks out! You can see it on his face. Total disbelief. Did he just abandon his principles for nothing? He slams his fists on the mat, swears like only Steve Austin can and leaps up in a fit of pure **** emotion.

To me, that's wrestling. I care because he cares, and boy does he **** care. I wish more wrestlers could be that expressive.

Everyone should go back and enjoy Austin's '01 run. It was amazing.

Summer slam should have been Face Roman with Vince vs Heel Brock with Haymen. Have a double turn at the endnote ending and give Roman a master heel push with Vince doing the mic work. Gives Vince one last send off with his pronoun golden boy of the future

That also the year that "What?" Was born. I'm pretty sure I even remember the exact segment. IIRC the 1st time he started that was when he called in the ring a few alliance members on RAW that lost matches on the previous smackdown. He asked each one "who kicked your ass last Thursday" then followed with "what?" And the rest is history

From a performance range perspective, I agree with you. I think his 98 character work was the best of his career because he was perfectly cast and there was such an internal consistency to all of it, even if he didn't show the range he did in 01.

You don't really have to get beyond the first point when talking about why that heel turn was a bad idea. Even if he's performing very well, I can't get past that I just don't have any interest in seeing him in this role. It would be similar to them turning Bryan today. I have zero doubt that he would be able to put forth strong heel performances as a character and of course in-ring. But, I and the vast, vast majority of the audience, would have no interest in such a character.

Its similar with the finish of WM 17. When McMahon hands Austin that chair my eyes start to roll

Neat.
Kobe Bryant was asked who he feels is the toughest opponent to guard in the NBA. Instead of picking OKC's Kevin Durant, Bryant went with Portland’s Brandon Roy.

"Roy 365 days, seven days a week. Roy has no weaknesses in his game."

Damn you guys are lucky. I guess I can't complain much being in Chicago, but for some reason we've never gotten a Royal Rumble. We got an old school survivor series on Thanksgiving night, got a summerslam, got 2 and 1/3 Wrestlemanias! But no royal rumble

Yeah the only thing we've never got is the Royal Rumble and the Rumble is my favorite PPV. The closest we've had is
the first ever Royal Rumble in 1988 in Hamilton which is a town about a 30 minute drive away and between us and
Buffalo.

Yeah seems like Chicago gets more PPVs and shows then everybody we went 10 years without getting any
PPV's 2006-2016 and we only got a couple of RAWs and Smackdowns during that time span. They're having
a dual RAW and Smackdown Taping here next week and they haven't had TV tapings here since last August
for a RAW and Smackdown dual taping.

I'm not sure if the link I posted is legit or not just speculation and rumors right now...

Are you gonna be going to "All In" ?

At this point in time no, because immediately after tickets went on sale the scalpers ate them all up and prices are outrageous. But I haven't ruled it out though. Prices get more reasonable the day of the show so I still might. Last October I did go to ROH war of the world's which featured all the main Bullet Club guys including a Kenny Omega match for the main event.

Atleast around here, ticket scalping has gotten way out of hand for basically everything especially concerts, but now wrestling. The same thing happened with money in the back 2 months ago. I've never seen that happen with a wwe show. Must have been the Ronda Rousey factor

That's cool I've only been to one ROH show and that was in 2009 in like this renovated barn lol. It was pretty bad ass
though and had Daniel Bryan and Seth Rollins vs. the American Wolves in the main event and had guys like Kenny Omega,
Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Cesaro, Colt Cabana etc on the show.

Have you been to any major Chicago WWE shows over the years?

My list is quite extensive:

Survivor Series Thanksgiving night 1989---- Though i dont remember much I was only 6 years old lol
WCW Spring Stampede 2000---- Was one week after the Russo/Bischoff era began, very good show.
No Mercy 2007
Judgment Day 2009---- By far the worst show i've ever been to. Was awful
Night Of Champions 2010
Money in the Bank 2011-----By far the best show i've ever been to (atleast main roster)
Elimination Chamber 2012 (Milwaukee)
Payback 2014
payback 2016
Backlash 2017
Both NXT Takeover Chicagos

And of course, several RAWS/Smackdowns, a couple Nitros, a few house shows

That ROH era that you just mentioned, i've been to several of those! Back then ROH used to come here every other month. Now its maybe twice a year. Though we do have AAW to fill that void. AAW is probably the best independent out there today. Gargano and Ciampa came from there, Bobby Fish and O'Reilly, Seth Rollins started there, Matt Riddle was there, etc. Many of the guys you see on the current TNA roster are from there. Pentagon, Fenix, Callihan/OVE, Scarlett, Kingston, etc. Lots of impact guys make frequent appearances too like DJ Zima Ion, Moose, Trevor Lee, Jimmy Jacobs to name a few. And im sure theres a handful of guys I didn't list.

So yea I cant complain about not getting a Royal Rumble lol. Us here in Chicago are pretty blessed with lots of access to good wrestling. We even have a Wrestling store that frequently has guest appearances to do photos and signings. Though they only sell a limited number of tickets and the big ones get sold out REAL fast (like the Okada appearance coming up, Bullet club last October, etc). I was hoping last week that Billy Corgan would make an appearance there since he was in town for 2 nights with the Smashing Pumpkins, but no dice.

My biggest regret is, I haven't been to an ECW show, and they were here a couple times in 1999 and 2000 (REALLY wish i went to Anarchy Rulz 1999)

Wow man that's quite the resume and Chicago had a lot of NWA/WCW shows in 80's right? Like Chi-Town Rumble and
stuff?

I started going to shows as a kid in the late 80's for Maple Leaf Gardens house shows that would be here about once
a month I remember the first show that I ever went to was main evented by Dibiase vs. Savage so this must have been
a few months after Wrestlemania 4.

We had Wrestlemania 6 here at the Skydome and it was Hogan vs. Warrior my 2 favorites as a kid. I was so completely
torn between the 2 and had shirts of both guys and they were the only 2 wrestlers I dressed up for Halloween. I was 9
years old at the time and my dad was leaving for a business trip to Europe so we couldn't go to the show and went to
the airport to say goodbye to him. I was devastated to miss that show/match I remember the front page of the paper
that day had the Warrior with no face paint on and I remember playing the Wrestlefest arcade game at the airport that day.

The first show I went to in years was a house show at Skydome in 1997 it was just a couple of days before Survivor Series
and Bret Hart was already writing "WCW" in the air with his hands so I can kind of see why Vince was scared and had to
screw him lol.

As for the rest of the shows I've been to...

Nitro - August 1998 in Miami

Nitro - March 1999 (When Goldberg speared Bret with the chest protector on)

ECW on TNN - August 1999 (RVD vs. CW Anderson main event)

Wrestlemania 18 - (2 days before my birthday ended up getting 5th row seats after upgrading with a scalper an hour
before with a friend. Got to keep the chair and in 2013 Hogan signed autographs a block away from me so I got him
to sign the chair)

SummerSlam 2004 - (Also got 5th row from a scalper and got to keep the chair. Kind of meh show and we crapped on
most of the card I believe this was the birth of "Bizzaro land")

Unforgiven 2006 - (Great PPV but had worst seats ever upper deck nose bleeds in the corner near the set)

ROH 2009 house show (Only ROH show I've been to but it's amazing all the future stars on the card)

WWE Network Special Road Block 2016 (Worst seats ever even in a small arena was behind the Entrance set. I believe WWE
was testing out the brand split at the time HHH vs. Ambrose was a good main event)

NXT TakeOver Toronto 2016 (Had a blast might be biased but I think one of the best TakeOvers ever)

Survivor Series 2016 (Goldberg! seats were literally right beside the hard camera dead center facing the ring. My
voice was completely shot for RAW the next night but was fun doing 3 shows in 3 nights)

Slammiversary 2018 (First ever TNA/Impact Wrestling show maybe show of the year?)

Also have done a bunch of Impact TV tapings the last couple of weeks and been to a handful of RAWs and Smackdowns
over the years. Right now I'm trying to get over the flu so I can be ready for RAW and Smackdown this week.

Would love to see a NJPW and Luch Underground show and WWE wise got to see a Rumble and would like to see
Money In the Bank and maybe Hell in a Cell although I've seen a Cell match in person before.

Hopefully the time the Rumble comes to our cities they'll be 50 man Rumbles Saudi styles

Start planning a mass funeral for the smarks. He ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

In all honesty, I like Roman. I think he's much closer to a Diesel than a Cena when it comes to being the face of your company but at least he can put on a match. All they need to do is take away his script and he's fine.

I believe your right about WCW 80s house shows, but was too young and missed out on all that. My dad hated wrestling so we were just lucky he took us to survivor series lol

Wrestlemania 18 was awesome! Had to have been a blast to have been in person. And I'm not crazy about the Saudi royal rumble. Like how does the winner of a 50 man rumble not get an automatic title shot? But yea I'm sure for seeing it in person it's still cool as hell.
