9ers can't catch a break with their free agents. Malcolm Smith last season and now likely McKinnon before they even take a regular season snap.

If you take away what it does for him and his family personally, the most unfortunate part of it is it'll take ANOTHER year for them to probably realize he's not a 1a quality NFL back.

Usually it bums me out in situations like this when a guy will always have an ACL attached to his name like that because of the "if not for" debates that can pop up from it, but in this instance I don't care as much about that. Just get to a point where it's understood by the masses that he's not a 1a, quality, starting back in the NFL. He's not a 1a or a 1b for me. It was a bad idea for any realistic amount of money.

He could be my 3rd back. He could be a move piece for me. I said before free agency I like parts of his game and he was at least a guy that COULD have a spot on my team if I were in charge. He's not a worthless player that you can't do anything with. I could do a lot worse than him for a 3rd option. But it was at a point where he could and did find himself a better situation than that so any talk of him being added as a 3rd guy is and wasn't realistic...obviously.

The only thing he brought to the table was the fact that he was a borderline elite pass catcher for a RB as a route runner and quality of hands. Other than that I didn’t think he was nearly as good as Carlos Hyde as a runner. Letting Hyde go was one of the most annoying thing this organization has done wrong in the past 5 years (in terms of being considered a huge mistake).

Could be a blessing in disguise. Might find a good one on the scrap heap; this wasn't the Niners' year, anyway.

A blessing in disguise would have been he plays and they come to their senses that he's not foundational back for the future. A smaller chess piece. A smaller move piece, sure. But not a co-starter and focal point of a running game. Then get out from under his cap number(s) for next year and beyond. That would have been a blessing in disguise given this is a mess around year and start to set things up for real years.

This just restarts the McKinnon clock for another year IMO. Sure, because it's an ACL they might get their hands forced to have to start peeking out for somebody to have in the event it's a terrible rehab and he can't be the McKinnon they thought, but I don't think this will change them as much as I'd like them to change in regards to McKinnon as a player.

WIDE RECEIVER
Richie James Jr., San Francisco 49ers – 81.4
James was efficient for the 49ers in his first preseason after being drafted in the seventh round of this year’s NFL draft. He ranked seventh in the league among wide receivers with at least 10 targets with an averaged of 3.49 yards per route run.

Le’Veon Bell is a free agent next year. I’m just saying

I think the pass catching was the appeal to Kyle because if he's in the lineup the defense can't key on whether it's going to be a run or a pass. That's probably one reason they let Hyde walk is that he wasn't much of a receiving threat.

Best case scenario for the team now is to hope Bredia can emerge as both a running and passing threat because Morris will be solid but he's not going to scare defenses in the passing game.

How do the Raiders give up Mack and a second round pick? What a joke.

I didn’t think McKinnon was gonna do much as a RB anyway. He had never looked like a lead back. He was only gonna be a factor in the receiving game imo. Oh well. They should just cut their losses now.

So glad they got Morris. Someone that can actually run the rock between the tackles and not fall down as soon as he’s breathed on.

I had my doubts about McKinnon as the lead back, and I always felt like we grossly overpaid for him, but I was curious to see what he would do in Shanahan's offense. The biggest issue is that, if nothing else, McKinnon was a great change-of-pace back. We don't necessarily have that now. Breida has the measurables, and he may be a better true RB, but he's nowhere near the route-runner and pass-catcher that McKinnon is. And probably not the blocker. Mostert has also been having trouble with drops over the preseason.

Return to San Francisco 49ers
