I don't know that trolling a guy who has sincere beliefs against homosexuality by playing a song about a transsexual as he comes to the plate is something that will make things better. It seems that instead of actual change, people just want others to change the words that they say out loud for fear of public embarrassment. I'm not really sold on the effectiveness of that with regards to changing peoples' minds, though.
Baseball is competition and entertainment. The Braves and Cubs are in pennant races, trolling opponents is fair game and even fun. As for changing Murphy's mind, of course it won't. That's not the purpose. And yes, athletes should be afraid of public embarrassment if they voice opinions that are hurtful to fans who are effectively paying their salaries. Sometimes, controversy has its consequences, as NFL players have found, but if so, I congratulate them for their persistence. But some pushback against controversial views expressed by even a minor public figure like an athlete is to be expected.

Signalling what is acceptable and not acceptable via public embarrassment is actually a good way to affect change. It works.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

It works at getting people to stop being honest to the public, but it doesn't cause people to change. Depends what you're trying to accomplish I guess. It might cause a change in future generations, though, if they see less people openly talking about certain topics in certain ways.

Do you think the Rockies would trade us Trevor Story for Tulo? Tulo is a legend in that town, I'm sure Rockie's fans would love to have him back...

Nope. Story is the reason they traded us Tulowitzki, aside from rebuilding. Both the A's and the Rockies traded their stars four years ago and are now in playoff spots.

I was being sarcastic and ironic.

The O’s would be smart to sign these two. I do not want them in the division but they are far away from contending.

Giants’ Madison Bumgarner wants to stay, but knows decision isn’t all his
https://www.sfchronicle.com/giants/article/Giants-Bumgarner-wants-to-stay-but-knows-13242967.php
Giants face rebuild possibilty or go for it again...Bumgarner , Posey ,Belt all starting to face injury problems. Their pay roll was over 200M before this year. They had a ridiculous run , should probably hit the reset button soon.
Before the 2016 season, the Diamondbacks gave Zack Greinke a six-year, $206 million deal when he was 32. Bumgarner is expected to seek at least that, but he would enter free agency at a time when teams are devaluing starters and reluctant to risk that type of money on pitchers.

Re: Around the MLB 2018
Bumgarner isn't going to get anywhere near that. He's had two exceedingly mediocre seasons in a row where he missed significant amounts of time; they'd be well-served to pick up his 2019 option, but any team paying him even $100m is going to regret it virtually from the moment the ink dries.

**** your asterisk.

Re: Around the MLB 2018
Yeah Bumgarner won't get near that. He hasn't been the same since his accident. And Posey is "Mauer-ing" right now, so his value is about to dry up. He's turning into a slap hitter that can only play 1B as the injuries mount. Hip surgery is never a good thing. They have a few decent young arms, but their core is all on the wrong side of 30, and have already declined significantly. Hard to believe Brandon Belt has never hit 20 HR in a season, too.

Yeah, if there's a team that needs to slowly purge an old, expensive roster while rebuilding their system, it would be the Giants. Posey, Cueto, Melancon, Samardjiza, Pence and Belt will have made $118.7m this year; they've provided less than 4 fWAR combined. In an era where most teams are getting younger, 9 of their top 11 in PAs are 30 or over (and the other two suck). They're stuck with a lot of those contracts, but they aren't going to be able to compete with them, either. Move what they can (which isn't much), wait out the rest while sinking into the mire, and start dreaming dreams about the 2022 season. There's no way they can compete barring an unexpected comeback from, like, half the roster.

**** your asterisk.

Would have been good for us if Minny had squeaked that one out...
At this rate, we might be finishing 2nd in the Central.

Re: Around the MLB 2018
How close were the Jays to trading for Yelich this past offseason?
https://theathletic.com/549185/2018/09/26/it-has-been-special-on-emotional-day-brewers-christian-yelich-may-have-secured-national-league-mvp/
But his game has advanced in Milwaukee. On Tuesday, he recorded his 33rd home run and 104th RBI on the season, both career highs.
The first half, where he hit .292 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI, resulted in an All-Star Game appearance. But manager Craig Counsell recently said Yelich was disappointed in how he played, that he never felt truly locked in during that stretch.
“I think he’d say that, yeah,” Counsell said.
But in the second half of the season, his game has been taken to the next level, with Tuesday night being one of many examples of the impact he brings each time he steps to the plate. He’s slashing .359/.425/.732, hitting 22 home runs and 61 RBI in 59 games, further strengthening his MVP case.

Not close. One poster has stated several times in the last few days that the only way he gets done is if we gave them Vlad. That is the only player they would accept from us.
