Sounds like it's gonna be the 'Trae Young Experience' this upcoming season...

With lots of PnR play.

Before coming to Atlanta in 2017, Schlenk spent 13 years in the Warriors' front office. He saw Curry go from a promising young player to an exploding star when former Warriors coach Mark Jackson made the decision to turn him loose, freeing him to bomb away from 3-point range, to make mistakes of aggression, and to tap into the showmanship and artistry that was essential in his becoming the player he was meant to be.

Young will have the same green light in Atlanta, both Schlenk and new Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce told me. It'll no doubt lead to some wild shots that'll have Pierce cringing on the sideline, as Young heaves 28-footers off the dribble before anyone else has touched the ball, but the hope is the freedom will expedite the growth.

"You just don't see kids his age who can run pick and roll so naturally, who can make plays and find guys on the move with both their left and right hand. He's got a great feel for the court, and summer league can only show so much of that. When he has NBA players all around him, its going to open up the court so much more for him."
CBS Sports

Young is projected to have the ball in his hands for a significant portion of games which will help him amass points and assists. For example, the pick and roll will allow Trae study the opposing defense to determine what is the right play on a specific possession.

In that offensive system, Young can bring the ball up to the 3-point line and call for a screen. Once the pick is set, Trae can pay attention to his defender to determine the course of action. If the defender stays under the screen, he can either shoot the ball immediately or go over the screen to shoot a mid-range jumper.

I can't wait. And I think the idea that he'll be throwing wild 3s all the time is way overblown.

I'm really thinking putting some money down for rookie of the year.

If he plays more like he did in his last 5 minutes of SL, I'll be ok with a few ill-advised 3s.

I think we've beat the topic to death but the long 3s have a purpose so they are a key part to his game. I think some folks (likely ones who haven't watched him) think he'll be jacking 10 of those a game. He's never done that. Those are strictly to force the defender to not slack off of him. Plus they are demoralizing as hell to the opposition when they go in.

I was in full agreement earlier in the year. Then I remembered our practice facility.

Coach Pierce Introduces "Four-Point Line"

Lloyd Pierce motioned toward the practice court behind him. Pierce nodded toward the three-point line, painted white, and another red line laid out five feet behind it. It was added in May shortly after Pierce was hired as head coach.

Pierce was referencing Trae Young's shooting from pre-draft workout from two weeks earlier.

I agree there's purpose to SOME but some of those shots were downright atrocious in his first set of SL games.

I'm actually hopeful we get plenty of Young Trae at SG. That kid, running off screens and utilizing plenty of off-ball movement in general, would drive defenders mad.

Particularly on a team filled with shooters and passers like ours.

He'd get so much defensive attention, it'd open the driving lanes for guys like Lin and Bembry.
And leave plenty of opportunities for backdoor cuts from guys like Prince, Baze and Anderson.

The threat of Trae (and Huerter to a lesser extent) away from the ball is a huge boon to us that we should take advantage of.

There is a lot of noise about Travis trying to recreate the Warriors here. Obviously that's hard to do but the truth is why not? The rest of the league has been really slow to respond to team that has dominated the league for four years. Obviously they have Durant now but they were doing it when Steph was the only true star on the team.

My point is that what Travis seems to understand is that what makes the Warriors successful is the enormous pressure they put on defenses from at least 3-4 positions at all times. When you have guys playing major minutes who are offensively challenged or have a one dimensional offensive game then it's not as hard for the defense. This is why I think guys like Bembry, Dorsey, and maybe even Baze might not be long term Hawks.

I also think this is why Travis personally coached up Prince last year to get him to try to display all his tools in game situations. To see if he could actually be that guy. That guy being Iggy.

This report is from the mid point of the last college season. PnR just HAS to be a part of our offense moving forward, right?

NBA Scouts Describe What's Behind Trae Young's Star Potential

NBA scouts are buying into Oklahoma's Trae Young more by the week.

Image

[S]ome scouts who initially expressed hesitation have admitted to Bleacher Report they're now finding it easier to picture his game translating at the pro level. Many are starting to look past the physical flaws that typically raise questions when evaluating for the NBA.

"His production speaks for itself. No need to overthink," one Eastern Conference scout said. "He leads the nation in scoring and assists while being game-planned for by every opponent. His skill and vision make up for average athleticism."

Young's playmaking has been equally impressive as his scoring, particularly out of pick-and-roll sets (39.9 percent of offense), where he's been excellent at freezing the defense with hesitation and using it to create scoring chances for teammates.

He's been most effective hitting the roll man. While Young generates most of his offense out of pick-and-rolls (39.9 percent) and transition (23.9 percent), he's also one of the most efficient isolation scorers in the country.

The fact that he's generating offense in extreme volume—even on off days—[should] jump out as a comforting selling point to evaluators on the fence.
Bleacher Report -- January 2018

Spoiler:
"The spacing of the NBA, his shooting and passing, I think he's going to be good," a scout from the West said. "He has that mentality, too. He legitimately wants to be good. He isn't fake."

Though scouts still sound reluctant to move him atop their boards—firmly ahead of surefire top picks such as Arizona's Deandre Ayton, Slovenia's Luka Doncic, Duke's Marvin Bagley III and Missouri's Michael Porter Jr.—it seems like Young is knocking on the door.

"To me, he's a top-10 pick, and I think when you get to the No. 7-10 range, he's one of the only guys who has star potential," a third scouted added.

It better be because one of Schlenk's selling points was Trae's ability to run the PnR and make plays with either hand from it.

I hope you're right.

But Lloyd and Trav have each come from teams that recently didn't utlize it very much.

LOL

I'd lay it at the feet of the new coach.

After how awful we looked in the Utah Summer League, I am incredibly concerned regarding Pierce's offensive scheme and approach with Trae at the helm.

Maybe it's cuz of the personnel?

The Dubs have no elite roll big. Embiid and Simmons are a bit too big for it?

Either way, I hope either they use it cuz of the players or they come up with something better.

Both Trae Young and Jeremy Lin are Pick N Roll point guards.

Hawks need to have a big man that can "roll"

Dedman, John Collins, Thomas Robinson etc....

I have a feeling Thomas Robison would do well with Trae and Young

Even if he does well, not sure it's well enough for him to make the team.

Forty something FT%.......

I have a feeling that we're in for a rude awakening going from Bud's fluid motion offense to whatever the heck we saw in SL from Lloyd Pierce on offense.

There's hope in that even if Schlenk and Pierce were a part of teams with low p&r usage they themselves had little to do with it given that one was an assistant GM and the other a defensive assistant.

Can’t find the article right now

Schlenk quoted earlier this month in Athletics article talking about running PNR with Trae

It will definitely be part of offensive game plan

Edit: I found the quote

Schlenk:
“This year, we are going to look for John to establish chemistry with Trae (Young) in the pick and roll. For John, it’s going to be when to roll and when to slip and get out when (the defense) is (breaking) hard, when they are switching, when to pop back and be open for the open 3. That’s the growth we are going to see from him and for Trae to read those situations well.”

Return to Atlanta Hawks
