My Guy Fred Warner!!!

Post#1 » by NinerSickness » Mon Sep 10, 2018 12:09 am

Today was about what I expected from the Niners this season. They're good, but they're still a few pieces away...

But the one thing I REALLY wanted to see was Fred Warner playing well, and he exceeded even my expectations! He was sniffing out running plays, filling gaps immediately, deflecting a pass to Kyle Rudolph, causing a fumble...

Dude is going to be great! Should've been a 1st-round pick. One of the very few times the Niners picked the guy I wanted. :D

Warner looked great, shows the promise you want to see...

His frame is a bit concerning but lets see....

Yeah, 230 is on the smaller side. Most guys end up getting a little thicker as their careers progress; hoping he gets to 240 by next year.

He was 236 at the combine. Granted he's 6'3", so it's spread out a bit more than on a shorter guy. The NFL seems to be going toward smaller, more athletic LBs, though. Makes sense in a league where passing is increasingly important.

I was also really excited to see Warner play, and he didn't disappoint (though not a finished product just yet). Malcolm Smith is going to be out of a job. We may have a second version of Willis and Bowman. Hopefully this duo can stay together a bit longer than they did.

I can't think of anyone that didn't like that pick. I think Warner was everyone's favorite pick of that draft.

Most people were on board once he was drafted. CP before the draft:

ChrisPozz wrote:He's a good one to bring into your facility because there's more projection stuff with him than a lot of linebackers in this class. A lot of people think he can play inside and outside after being a SAM. Good size. Solid tackler. Flashy athletic ability in space and coverage but has mostly played man coverages so far. Good instincts but needs to learn to diagnose quicker. One of the best linebackers in this class at hand usage and getting off blocks. Hasn't been asked to rush the passer very much.

He'd be one of the first guys I'd want to work with from a coaching perspective. He'd be a fun weapon to have for some of the annoying offenses being deployed these days (thanks, Sean McVay). As I mentioned a lot of people have gone into detail about how you kind of have to do some projecting with him based on where he came from but I feel very solid about his NFL projection based on what I want done in '18 and beyond. He doesn't scare me as much as he does others. I don't think he has the highest ceiling but his floor is also much higher than a lot of guys in this class and the past couple classes IMO, too.

I before the draft:

Courtesy of CP. This belongs here. Lynch's broken-clock moment was drafting this guy.

Witherspoon was a star also. It is only one game but he played really well. Hope this continues.

Witherspoon matches up well with a guy like Evans, bigger, jump-ball types. We'll see what he does if/when he's matched up against a smaller, speedy guy like Ross this week. That said, I do think Richard Sherman has been a very positive influence on Witherspoon, and hopefully that will continue. If the offense can improve - and that's largely on Garoppolo - then this team could make a run.

Another knock on Witherspoon last year was that he was not physical enough. I would think that would hurt against a player like Mike Evans.
