Virgin Islands was pretty much out of it at this point, so I guess they seen this trip to Brazil as a waste of money. The game gets recorded as a 20-0 win for Brazil. Could be bad for Canada, but Brazil might have won by 20 anyways.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
Going get interesting as this could be a regular occurrence from here out for multiple teams.
At the very least I can see teams that have already qualified barely bothering to scrape a team of high schoolers together. Would we bother to pull guys from Europe if we have already qaulified or just use local NBL guys?
This could look really bad for FIBA.

I imagine by the final window games between qualified teams and eliminated teams will be unwatchable in terms of quality. It will only be the middle teams that will be trying their best. Still I hope this forfeit is a one time thing, it's one thing to send your D level team, but not showing up at all is another level.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
An interesting discussion about the fact that there were only 4,500 people in the Canada-Brazil game on Thursday in Montreal. And rightfully comparing it to an attendance of 10,000 in the Duke-McGill scrimmage in the same venue only a month earlier.

I don't agree with everything that Micallef has to say, but one thing he said certainly resonated: that many people in the Montreal basketball community didn't even know about the game. I talked to a coach in one of the Montreal colleges, and when I asked him if he was going to be in the game, he said: What game? That to me shows a really poor organization and marketing from basketball Canada. The other thing I agree with is that the fact that these games are only streamed with DZAN is quite horrible.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
Another interesting wrinkle.
Supposedly Canada promised FIBA and Chile that we’d bring NBA players as a trade for pushing back the game for travel considerations. Chile sold the game out quickly on the expectations that they’d see NBA players. Now everyone is pissed off, including FIBA.

This is unbelievably dumb by Canada lol... Did we not get buy-in from our guys prior to making this commitment?
And you know what FIBA? Add this as a lesson learned. Pro-athletes at the highest level don't want to hop on a plane from Montreal to Chile in the middle of their offseason (a break away from their 82 regular season) to play 1 GAME, against a crap team, that provides them with zero prestige for their resume. It just doesn't add up.
Everyone should be disappointed.

Roster was announced
http://basketball.ca/en/news-article/roster-announced-for-mondays-fiba-basketball-world-cup-2019-amer
Ejim and Jackson are there. Feel pretty comfortable about the game now that Ejim is playing.
Guessing we'll see something along the lines of Keane, Best and Ejim starting, and Anthony or Landry at centre.
Wonder if Brady will get the last spot.

This sounds like face saving by the Chilean promoters - I doubt seriously Canada would make any such promise about roster composition. As well, several other games have been moved back in this group to accommodate travel , not just Canada/Chile. Seems like a false, jingoistic attempts by our hosts to calm their fans.
I'm told by a former Chef de Mission of Canada's National team who travelled extensively with our teams in South America that this is standard operating procedure in the Southern Hemisphere.
Here's the roster ( you had it in at a technical meeting the night before the event).

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
All things considered, a fairly good group heading for Valdive ( a city of 140,000 that hosted the Americas U18 tournament in 2016 ).
Glad to see Jackson and Ejim are on the trip ( about the same distance between Tehran and Montreal to give some context).
The Virgin Island fiasco is a real problem. All the more reason as Mojo points out to win what you can control ( Argentina is about to go into the tank with 6 guys that might wind up in Euroleague and not available in the winter windows ). I think FIBA might have to tweak things, place more seeding emphasis perhaps on the qualifiers for the Worlds in China.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
Agree. This is not a terrible roster all things considered. Should be well favored over Chile but that travel is going to hurt. And South American home cooking always scares me. Heslip shines against weaker competition so I’d think he starts.
Still curious about how Justin Jackson fits in. Could be anything from the starting 3 or the third string PF. I really doubt he is better than Dyshawn Pierre right now. And sure hope Joel Anthony is more than the corpse we saw last November as he is going to need to contribute meaningful minutes, hopefully behind Landrey.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
Props to Brady Heslip for representing in this game as well. Him and CoJo have been rocks for this country's basketball team at the guard position. Much respect.
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
Huge win for Venezuela vs. DR. Now that DR is 5-3, only Venezuela, Canada or Brazil are likely to finish top of Group F. Venezuela has (CAN > VIR > DOM > CAN), Canada has (CHI > VEN > BRA > CHI > VEN), and Brazil has (DOM > CAN > VIR > DOM). Given Canada's roster turnover, and BRA and VEN's roster consistency, it would be pretty impressive to finish the qualifiers at 8-1. Doesn't really matter as long as we finish top 3, but this #23 FIBA ranking has gotta change.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
Canada Basketball released pics of practice in Chile today.
Looks like a possible starting line up of Anthony, Ejim, Jackson, Best & Keane as indicated by all wearing the Grey jerseys.
I’d rather Landry start but that’s just me. And I hope Justin Jackson deserves to start and is not there just because he was an NBA draft pick.

Chile is not very strong - this Canadian team should be able to take care of business tonight. The DR losing in OT to Venezuela was great for us - just need to squeak out a victory tonight by any means necessary and we should be very well positioned to qualify.

there has got to be a better way to do it than the way they are . Maybe one tournament just before the olympics or something . This way sucks .

I'm really looking forward to seeing Jackson, because he's basically been on the shelf for a year. For this game, I think he'll be useful. At the very least he should provide some tough defence on Chile's wing players, who likely won't be used to playing against someone with his kind of length and athleticism (the main reason he was seen as a draft-worthy player in the first place). If he can hit a few open threes along the way, he'll have earned his starting nod in my opinion.
And then Pierre can come in off the bench and spell either Jackson or Ejim and play major minutes.

Re: Team Canada Basketball Thread V2.0
I have to hand it to Japan in that they were able to get Rui Hachimura, a junior at Gonzaga and potential future NBA lottery pick, to bail on the first 3 weeks of school to play in two of Japan's FIBA qualifiers this past week in Japan. Rui scored 25 today against Iran and 24 versus Kazakhstan last week, both wins for Japan.
